Hey guys :)
I'm not sure if this is a completely dead topic or not, if it is, I'm sorry for bringing it up again!

But, I've been hearing mad shiz about York.

I've heard about the rapes and sexual assaults already, and some murders/attempted murders, Jane & Finch, all that. Gotta say it was a real suckerpunch considering that I've been wanting to go to York for SO long. I was under the impression that it was some amazing, high-rank university that everyone wants to get into. I know a lot of people from York and they say that they loved it there.

Anyway,
I'm from Ottawa and I'm gonna be taking up rez there if I don't get admitted anywhere else. By now I'm convinced that the moment another university (besides Ottawa >_>) accepts me I'm ditching York cause of the security issues. But has the security improved in any way?

There's tons of people stating that security has been upped like mad and others saying the opposite.

But yeah; these blogs actually messaged me not to long ago and I swear they just keep confusing me.

There is nothing wrong with York U. I go there every morning at 5am for the last 4 years for training and I feel very safe there. You see a lot of people jogging too around the residence. Yes, there are some isolated incidents but I am sure this kind of stuff is everywhere. Jane/Finch has quietened down a lot and you don't have to pass
Jane/Finch to go to York. The campus is huge and there are so many other entries to the school. Your program is a good one to go there. So don't let the reputation of the area to dissuade you from going there.

1) York is not as great as you described it to be...anyone can get in, resulting in a large amount of dumb people (compared to other, better unis like waterloo, queens, etc.) mccleans ranked it as #20 for rep in canada last year (i think)
2) I want to go there too, but I'm not scared at all. Think about this: the news only reports things when something bad or unusual happens, never something normal. Airplane crashes rarely occur, that's why that make the news when it does happen. People get scared it might happen to them, but what people don't know is how safe airplane travel really is (compared to cars). If York was really that bad, then no one would go.
3) The second link is fascinating...never seen someone so enthusiastic about york before. O_O my math tutor told me that he hated york though. :P he thought it was a joke lol.

Only a coward ditches a university because of safety issues that occur in the area and around it. What does Jane and Finch have to do with York University's academics? Safety issues are prevalent everywhere. Suck it up and take your own precautions. There's 50,000 students that go there. For the program you applied to York is a good school. They are known known for their Liberal arts programs, fine arts and Schulich. Admissions cut offs are low, it doesn't have a good rep among employers, but it's undergrad. Get the gpa and go do a masters.

I got to York and I really enjoy it. Yes, it is near the Jane and Finch area but the main area of campus is closer to Keele and Steeles, I would say. Yes, there have been numerous reports of sexual assaults, and there have been shootings-- but overall it's not bad.

It is considered an easy school.

In relation to crime, I can honestly say that as long as you mind your own business you're relatively safe there. They have goSafe as well, which is an escort service that you call and a member of university staff will walk you to wherever you need to go. I highly recommend not going through parking lots, or anywhere near The Village at night. I would also not travel long distances at night, especially alone.

It's an okay school and it's not as bad as people make it out to be. Take it as you will.
At York U for Sociology.
