SO,im in highschool right now, in grade 10. my goal this year was to get scholars award from my school, which is an average of 85% or higher in the 3rd term. doesnt seem like im going to get it this year. What im asking you guys for is some help. Im getting around a 75% right now. My averages in my 8 courses differ quite a lot from each other. For instance, im getting a 55% in math (im horrible at a few of the subjects in math), but in courses like metal shop (took it for fun, i just like welding, not for a future job or anything) im getting a 95%. Everyday i come home, finish whatever homework i had for the day, and from the last day or two, ive started looking over what i learned that day in class. i spend about 30 mins on each class. Depending on how long it takes me to understand the topic. I see other kids, working way less than me, nd getting 90's all year round. i know grade 10 doesnt matter that much when it comes to getting accepted into universities, but i would rather start working hard now, and building the habit for grades 11 and 12. Im just asking on how i could improve and recieve 90's like i want. I would do anything to have a 90 average at the end of the year. Im indian, and as a indian, my parents expect me to become a doctor.. or a engineer... or get into a profession which is reputable and makes quite a bit of money. My interest is in Electronics Engineering. I want to get into universities such as U of T, waterloo, and McMaster. My parents compare me to my neighbour, who just graduated and got into all of those universities for biological sciences. That makes my confidence go down quite a lot, because i get frustrated with having a 75%. At times i feel like giving up, and feel like ill never become a engineer like i want to. So anyone have any advice? On studying, notes, agenda's, habits, or anything which would help improve.
Sorry for the extra long read, but any advice would help quite a lot! Thanks in advance :)
Also needed to add, getting the 75% average makes me feel like a failure. I feel like i can never get 90's.

If you want to become an electrical engineer, I highly suggest you get on that math thing. Hire tutors, do 1000 practice questions, do whatever you need to do to get your mark up. Do you think you can't? If so, you're wrong. Think about how you probably thought grade 6 math had it's challenges back when you did it. Now you look back and it's so simple. The point is you've practised grade 6 math to the point of mastery, so I suggest you do the same with grade 10 math before it's too late. Of course, all this extra training and practice might seem a bit intimidating. In the case where your motivation isn't what you need to fulfill your dreams, I suggest taking a look at where your strengths are and using that to your advantage. It really sounds like you excel in kinaesthetic learning - is there any way you can find a career that's reputable where kinaesthetic learners do well? Also, you didn't mention your marks in classes like English. If you're good at those kinds of classes, perhaps consider something like law which might fit in with the expectations being imposed on you. I remember when I was in grade 10, my career choice wasn't anything I actually wanted - it was what my parents wanted of me. They too had expectations and I was going to become a pharmacist. What I really wanted was to become a teacher, regardless of the fact that teachers make less money and aren't as well-respected as pharmacists. Although my parents may not have thought I was making a wise decision, in the end they respected my decision and I can safely say that I made the right one. What's the point of me telling you all this? Well, if the reason you want to be an electrical engineer is because you actually do, that's great! Work hard, and your dreams will be realized. If it's because of those parental expectations, I HIGHLY suggest you work up the courage to make a stand for the sake of the rest of your life. Your parents may bug you about it for a few years, but at least you won't have to live miserably for the rest of your life even after you move out if you make your own career choice. On a typical day of adult life, 1/3 of the day is spent working. Make that 1/3 enjoyable, and you're sure to have a prosperous life! Thanks for the advise! these are my marks currently:
Science - 70 (im actually good in science, but this year its trumping me) Math - 55 English - 85 Metal - 90 Electrical Tech - 75 (good in this too, teacher isnt that great) Civics - 80 (had careers the last half of the year and got a 90) Gym - 80 History - 80
And yes i want to become a Electrical Engineer, by choice. not because my parents want me to. I find it interesting. I work on cars as a hobby and draw, but a mechanic isnt my choice as a career.

I think working on cars and stuff would be leaning more towards mechanical engineering, correct me if I'm wrong though. If you actually believe that you are intelligent and have the drive to do well, you will succeed with enough hard work. You don't have to get into prestigious universities to have a good career either. University of Waterloo: Systems Design Engineering Class of 2017

I think automobile engineering will be another choice for you as mechanical engineering gives knowledge about all machinery but automobile is only for automobiles.

^as the above user said If you are really interested going for electrical engineering program then you really have to work hard for maths. Its good to see that you have your mind set for the engineering program.

Learn what it means to take a quiz/test without actually "thinking". By this, I mean that you should have done so much review that you should know and be able to do virtually all questions without intense thinking. There should be no thoughts about "how should I approach this problem". The only thing you should be doing is the actual calculations and diagrams required to get the marks. That's what it will feel like if you've done countless practice and have "tweaked" all your concerns by asking someone reliable/your math teacher. Now, here's what you should do. Whenever homework is assigned, you should do it on the same day or the day after if you are incredibly busy. It is very bad to put off math for over two days as you'll be left behind. After that, you have to really think about what you are doing and make sure you understand everything. Ask your teachers questions whenever possible. You should prepare for a test, 3 days in advance. By that, I want you to look at what's important and redo the work you've done in the past week or two. It's incredibly tedious, tiresome and mentally draining, but you gotta review. After that, have a good night's sleep and pace yourself when writing a test. Make sure you have enough time to check your test once after completing it. That's what I accomplished during grade 12 advanced functions. My final mark is 13% above my grade 11 functions mark. I'm sure that you can go up as much or possibly more as well. Good luck! Grade 12 Courses: _____________________________________________ MHF4U0 - 93% EWC4U0 - 97% ENG4U0 - 90% BBB4M0 - 90% B0H4M0 - 86% MCV4U0 - 92%
