When are the deadlines to submit CPR classes, immunization and police check form and how long does it take to complete these requirements? Also, what was your 1st year timetable like? Did you have labs in all your classes? You said earlier that you know people who transferred...did they get transfer credits? Also, can you take summer courses to fast track?
Thanks in advance =)

With respect to the transfer credits, you can apply for them online in RAMSS. I just did mine yesterday and actually got more than I thought I would. Obviously we won't be able to get the actual nursing courses but you should def try n see if they'll give you any psychs / professional electives. Hope this helps! :)

Thanks!! I applied as well and did get a lot of Lower level liberal studies ones hopefully after i send them my course outlines they can give me more for professionally related electives and upper level liberal studies. That would make things so much easier as it would lower the course load!
Just thinking, are you going to the ryerson site as well? Which university are you transferring from??

sooooo i was just wondering
how much did you spend on books for the first semester
and
what electives did you choose? any recommendations?

Ouch, just thinking about all the money spent on books just hurts my wallet.

It was quite a bit. I don't remember the exact cost but the textbooks range from about $75-$160. Generally an elective or a course that only lasts a semester will be cheaper. As for the nursing textbooks, we were required to buy a nursing package from the bookstore, which cost about $500. It was necessary for us to buy it because inside was an online program we had to use for one of the nursing classes. The package also had textbooks which were going to used for 3 out the 5 nursing courses offered. You could opt out of buying the package, however you had to buy the component for the online program. I had a friend who did not buy the nursing package and it was really hard for her to find it. I'm not even 100% sure if she ended up buying it, but she struggled because there was information on the online program that she missed out on.

I bought all my textbooks from the school bookstore. However, there are other way of buying textbooks cheaper. There is a discount bookstore nearby Ryerson. I don't remember the address but there will be people handing out flyers in the beginning of school for the store. I also bought a couple of textbooks from 2nd year student. Start looking for facebook groups for the Ryerson Nursing Class of 2015. Most likely, there will be people offering to sell textbooks.

If you want to grab a person now and reserve books, check out my class facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/...php?gid=102201443156868
Apparently people have put up their books for sale already, so message anyone of them for books.

As for the electives, I only took one for first year. I took ENG 112: Zip, Pow, Bang, Pot Lit. It's basically an english course about popular literature. We had several books to read and we had to buy them all seperately. It's a fun course, though there is a lot of writing involved. If you enjoyed english, then I would recommend this course.
I also heard Philosophy of Religion was a good elective as well. Keep in mind, nursing students are not allowed to take Psychology electives and we can only take 2 Sociology courses.

Another question....
Do nursing students bring their laptops to class on most days? Like would I even need to haul around all my books or no?

I've deleted this post because there have been some aspects of the PRR form requirements that have changed.

I don't want to give anyone else false information so please if you have any questions regarding PRR requirements, make a post on this topic, message me or go to Ryerson and inquire at the CPO Office.

Hopefully everyone see this in time!!

I find it easier to use a laptop. Others prefer to write notes. It's all up to you. I pretty much brought my laptop to school everyday. However, there are 2 classes were I don't need a laptop, Assessment and Practice. These classes were more based on practical skills, so I found it easier to write down notes and print out slides.

You don't need to bring textbooks to school because readings are "assumed" to be done before hand. However, some profs might request that you bring your textbook to class.

Hey guys~

I was studying computer science at UTSC till this fall term in 2011 but I found out that it doesnt really suit me immediately after the midterm. So I decided to switch my program to nursing but unfortunately UTSC didn't have nursing program.
Then I decided to withdrew from the school for this year.
and re-apply to other universities with my high school grade from upcoming September 2012. (cuz i only took 2 courses so i didnt have enough transfer credits. Also, my GPA at UTSC was HORRIBLE since I decided to quit school for nursing.)
So, I am trying to go to school near Toronto GTA area.
My first choice is Ryerson, and second is York. But I found out that I didn't take Biology 12 class at the high school.. So I applied to the community college to take Bio 12 course from February. But the problem is that this biology class starts from February till May..
But the deadline for the program is March 1st, I don't think I can send my midterm mark before the application deadline. Furthermore, York's application deadline is February 1st, there's no way I can proove that I will get Biology done.. What should I do?? I need some help.. :'(Anybody can help me? I need some HELP!!!! I am so lost right now...

PS. My high school marks are like this:
English -80
Gr.11 math marks - 92
Chemistry - 84
Bio - MISSING
Environmental Science - 95
Law - 91

I got accepted to both McMaster nursing and Ryerson nursing Bsn programs.
I really wanna go to Ryerson however, the avg you need to maintain to stay within the program is a 70 vs 63-66 to stay in McMaster's nursing program. (can anyone confirm this?)

My questions are, 1. Which school would you rather go if you had a choice, Mac or Ryerson? and 2. How hard was it to stay in the nursing program for Ryerson?

The average to maintain to stay in the Ryerson nursing program is at least a C- or 63% overall. You also need to maintain a mark above C- or 63 for ALL required nursing courses (ex. assessment, practice, theory, etc...). For other classes you take (ex. a psych course or sociology course), the passing mark is 50%.

However, if you receive a mark lower than 63% on a required nursing course, you will have to repeat the whole year despite the fact you passed the other required courses.

I think I would stay at Ryerson if I had a choice. I don't know much about Mac's nursing program, but I do know that it's a lot more focused on "problem solving". That's all I know. The Ryerson program is very collaborative and teamwork focused. I've had a great time here and I don't think I would ever choose to go to a different school.

In my opinion, I don't think there is a nursing school that's better than the other. I mean in the end, we ALL write the same exam regardless and we ALL have to learn the same material.

I didn't find it hard to stay in the nursing program in year 1. As long as you do your work and keep up with readings, you will be fine. The program does get significantly harder as the years go by. Year 2 is a MUCH different feel from Year 1.

I'm sorry, I don't really know what to do for you. You definitely have the marks to get in. I would talk to the admissions office and see what they say.

If they can't do anything else for you, then you would probably have to reapply next year. :(

I'm sorry I couldn't get to you on time, school's been hectic.

Hi, I got to Mac current for social science, and from what my friends in nursing have told me is that it is easy to maintain the marks for the program! My friend really only struggled with her elective to stay in the program coincidentally :p Mac has a fantastic nursing program and I am also hoping to get into this program as well :) That is the correct average you need to stay in the program as well.

Hi, I'm planning to apply to Ryerson & Mac for nursing progrsm and if you don't mind me asking: When you were in grade 12 what courses did you take, and the marks you got to get accepted for UWO Nursing? I'm planning to take Chem, Bio, Physics, Adv. Func, Calc, World Religions, and Band for the full year next year (I go to a non-semestered school), but at the same time I'm not entirely sure what I want to be-- a nurse or a chemist so that's why I'm taking physics and calc.

Additionally, what are you currently doing as a 1st year nursing student at Western? Do you guys get to have clinical experiences and for how long?
So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor and catch the trade winds in your sails.

Oh okay then, well I took Bio, Chem, Calculus, Advanced Function, Family Studies, English and Religion (I went to a Catholic school).

I don't remember the individual marks for each course because I graduated like 2 years ago but my average was 89.0%. Also, word around is that the admission average for the program has gone up. I think the cut off for my year was like an 85% (?? not entirely sure). I talked to a number of my friends and they were all admitted into the program with marks 85% and higher. So, study hard!!!

As a first year student at Ryerson, you take 7 courses per semester. Anatomy and Physiology, Theory, Assessment, Nursing Practice, Nutrition (1st semester), Intro to Psych (1st semester), an art of nursing course [I forgot the name lol im sorry] (2nd semester) and Child Psychology (2nd semester). Anatomy, Theory, Assessment and Practice are full year courses.

Each class has a 3 hour lecture. Assessment and Practice have a 1 hour lecture and 2 hour lab.

You do have clinicals in 1st year. However, because you only learn the basic skills in 1st year, you don't do much. You only have clinicals for the last 5 weeks of 2nd semester.

For your placement, you are placed in a long-term care facility/unit. You are required to help your assigned patient get ready in the morning, help bathe them, assist with breakfast and do any other required things to do in the morning. You are there for half a day, from 7am to 12pm.

Did I answer everything?

Yes, you did! Thank you! But hopefully you don't mind answering more: How did you manage to get 89 at the end of the year? Right now I'm getting high 80s but I'm afraid they'll drop down at the end of the year. I'm currently in grade 12 and taking all three sciences, MCR3U, gr. 12 English and World Religions (I go to a non-sem, Catholic school too), and I'm not so good with math and English. I heard at Ryerson nursing students write A LOT of essays? ahhh. Also, do you need physics to be a nurse like you know for the technology things, or not? How about exercise science (intro to anatomy) and philosophy for gr. 12 are those helpful? Did doing Calculus help you as a nursing student? Lastly, what made you decide you want to be a nurse? 'Cause I'm still confused. And sorry for asking too many questions! D:

As for my average, I just kept working really hard. I didn't want my average to drop, so I dedicated a lot of time to studying and seeing teachers after class with questions. I went to my teachers a lot, so even if you don't get something ask them anyways. If you show that you are willing to work hard for those marks, I think they won't mind bumping your mark up a bit.

You do have a number of essays to write. I'll admit, I never thought I was a good essay writer in first year. However, because of the number of papers you write, you get used it and eventually build up your skills from there. The profs tell you EXACTLY what they want from you in your papers in 1st year. You can't go wrong. However, as you get into 2nd year, the profs will be guiding you less and less. So, to understand what you're prof wants in the paper depends on you initiating a discussion with them and going to them with questions. I hear 3rd year is basically all essays. Keep in mind, there is also a "Writing Centre" at Ryerson which can help you build your writing skills and go through your paper.

You don't need physics for nursing. It's probably interesting to take and learn, but not needed. Calculus is not really needed as well. It's mainly bio and chem.

Exercise science can help with anatomy and physiology. Philosophy will help with the theoretical aspect of nursing. I'd say take philosophy in gr. 12. It will help with your critical thinking for your theory papers. You have to take a philosophy course in 3rd year as well.

As for why I wanted to be a nurse, well at first I wanted to become a doctor. However, as I got older, I started to realize I wanted to be a part of something that allowed me to be more "human" (let's just say I haven't had met any great doctors in my lifetime, so I never had a good "role model" for doctors). So, I chose nursing. I was unsure at first. However, after doing my placement in 1st year, I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.

If you are unsure but are leaning towards being a nurse, apply for it anyways. Try it for a year and if you find that it is not for you, transfer to another program. It's better to try something anyways. You never know if you'll like it. Nursing is not for everyone. It's better for you to decide that you don't want to do it while you are in school rather then graduate, get a job and decide you hate it.
