Hi, does anyone know when McGill will be sending out acceptances for architecture?
Also, if anyone has any information on the program and how it compares to Waterloo Architecture, please share. :)

I'm pretty sure they start sending acceptances in April to May I think.
From what I've heard, their architecture program is just as prestigious as Waterloo's, but they focus a lot more on theory and history as opposed to design.

Hey! I'm currently a U0 arch. student at McGill and I received my acceptance in early April last year. That being said, they have different acceptance dates depending on if you're from quebec, canada, or international.

The program has both theory and design elements as does Waterloo's with the main difference being that, because of their co-op program, students at waterloo have to learn more hands-on skills right away to be able to get a co-op placement.

Hi SiobhanE! Thanks for your input! Which province are you from? I'm from Ontario and on the McGill website the early admission dates are set as March 1st to March 16th. So I'm guessing I have to wait until May now. Bah.

Also, what courses do you take in U0?

No worries! I basically lived on these forums when I was struggling through all the applications processes. I'm from Ontario as well, but you should know that Architecture (like other specialized programs here) do not send out early acceptances. You'll have to wait for the general bulk acceptances to be sent out (which sucks, I know).

U0 is a fairly boring year academically in order for all of those from outside of Quebec to catch up material-wise to those finishing CEGEP. I have General Chemistry 1, General Chemistry 2, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Linear Algebra, Mechanics & Waves, Electromagnetism & Optics, and my elective is Microeconomic Analysis. Don't let this year turn you off though! If you get a chance, read up on the course descriptions of the arch. courses offered in 2nd-3rd-4th year.. They sound incredible!

Haha oh I'm in your old shoes currently, using up all my time to gather as much information and clues as possible. Was the admissions date different last year? Since your were admitted in April?

U0 sounds fun! (not!) How are you enjoying yourself in Montreal? :-) Are you balancing well between studying and your social life? And how are the exams/tests? Are they do-able as long as you study your butt off? Also, did you apply to any other architecture programs? (sorry, I know I'm bombarding you with tons of questions! But I really appreciate your responses, you have NO IDEA!)

Montreal is a fantastic city - there is always something going on and something to do. Living in res is an amazing experience and makes it very easy to be social and studious at the same time (can you say "study party")! Exams are definitely more difficult than high school and there is a lot more weight on final (ex. Calculus 2 final is 7 questions and worth 75% of your final grade, yikes!). There are days when you don't get much sleep and days when you'll have no moticvation whatsoever but its all doable and rewarding, if you ask me.

I applied to Waterloo and Carleton for architecture as well as Mcgill (didn't get into Waterloo unfortunately) and I also applied to Queens, Carleton, and McGill for Commerce, my second choice program. It's good to have backups, there are only 12 students from outside of Quebec in my year in arch. :S

And it's absolutely no problem! Ask away.

Ah! Sounds so exciting! :-) I'm going to have to stop all my wishful thinking in case it leads to heartbreak.

I also applied to a bunch of business programs as backups; Schulich, UofT co-op management, and McGill Commerce! Definitely makes me feel a lot better, since I won't be hearing from the architecture programs until April/May. But I actually dread the thought of going into the business field in reality. It would just... suck.

and 12 students??? Was there a reason why there's so few of you? Usually there's a larger amount no? That number is extremely frightening...

I believe it is the normal amount. There are ~40 students in each year -except for U0. This is because 25-30 spots are saved for Quebec students only. They accept 10-15 U0s from outside of Quebec so that in U1 when they're joined by the students from CEGEP they get the desired class size of ~40

* I shouldn't say that they only accept that few students. They most definitely accept a lot more knowing that students will accept elsewhere as well.

Then are the 40 students competing against each other? I know that the classes would shrink in size throughout the years in most programs, so would that be the same case with the architecture program?

Class sizes tend to shrink because people transfer to other schools/programs, drop out etc etc. So yes, I would assume that this happens in all programs to some degree.

When you say compete with each other, do you mean for spots? Or once you're accepted and in the program?

Sorry I meant the competition within the program once accepted.

Because for Waterloo, once they get down to 75 students, those 75 will continue on to do their master's degree at Waterloo without having to reapply. It's not like that for McGill right?

Oh ok, yes thats correct. To pursue a masters at McGill you have to reapply, new portfolio and all. There is also competition for opportunities to go on exchanges, for faculty scholarships etc.

Hi SiobhanE, thanks for all the useful info!
I'm also from Ontario, and it makes me really nervous that they accept so few students from outside Quebec D:

If you don't mind me asking, what type of stuff did you include in your portfolio? The deadline has passed, but I'm just wondering what kind of stuff they expect, because I'm not sure if my portfolio was up to par. Also, if you don't mind sharing, what was your grade 12 average?

Thanks so much!

Hmm I see. Well are there any clubs you've joined? I'm wondering on how to make new friends, since I am not the /most/ social person.

Llama: How about you? I'll just share: I am currently trying to maintain a 95+ and in my portfolio I had some figure drawings, some paintings, collages, a lamp fixture, two sculptures and an installation!

Congratulations redshoes, that's awesome!!!

And alexandrasiu, I have a mid-low 90 average right now.
In my portfolio I had a few drawings, a bunch of sketches, a couple paintings, and few mixed media things. Nothing too special.
Did you have any work related to architecture? I know it is not a requirement, but they did say work should reflect an interest in architecture, but most of mine didn't :/

Yeah mines is hardly architectural related at all either. I had one remodeling of a building? That was it. Everything else was... kind of random.

My average at the time was around a 97-98 and I was lucky enough to earn a Sheila Baillie Architecture scholarship for it. My portfolio was not architecture related at all! I do a lot of life drawing/portrait work and photography. I included a digital piece I had done as well as some mixed media work - chalk is my favourite medium right now. They're looking for people with good ideas, not 100% perfected artistic skills. You can teach people to draw/sculpt whatever, but you can't teach people how to see the world and think creatively. (I think this is a huge difference between McGill and Waterloo- Waterloo expects fully developed artists off the bat).

Congratulations redshoes! I may see you next year then :) To everyone else, be patient, although it may not seem like it, it is still early :)

alexandrasiu: no matter where you end up, my greatest advice would be LIVE IN RES. It's truly been the best experience of my life so far - you meet people in all different programs from all over the world. It makes it easy to make friends and it's really fun. (If any of you guys end up here at McGill, I live in Douglas Hall and it is THE best. Seriously.)
