So I just made an account on this site and I think it's very helpful. I'm currently in the eleventh grade and I'm trying to sort out what schools I want to go to and what scholarships I might apply for. The thing is, I dont know when to start applying...

Should I start going for scholarships right now in the eleventh grade? Or am I not supposed to start until next year? I want to try and get as much money as I can to help my parents out but I dont know where or when to start...

You're not going to find too many scholarships that you're eligible to apply for until grade 12 since most only accept applications from students entering university in the following year. It could be very helpful for you to start looking now though. Definitely peruse this website for scholarships and make a document with their deadlines and other relevant information. Most have around the same deadline from year to year, so you can get a good idea of when you'll be needing to submit your application next year.

I'll tell you now though, most of the major sums of money (i.e. $10 000+) will come from universities. The only external scholarships worth more than this that I can think of off the top of my head are TD and Loran, and those are EXTREMELY competitive. That being said, if you have an idea of which schools you want to apply to next year, check out their websites and look for major entrance scholarships. You'll be able to see their selection criteria, maybe even take a look at the application.

It's great that you're starting to look now though. I did the same around this time last year and so far I've been awarded over $40 000 from outside organizations, my future university (Queen's!) and my high school. It definitely helps to be prepared. Good luck, PM me if you have any other questions compress

What I have to say is basically exactly what cherrypie said:

There are a lot of scholarships that are due quite early in your grade 12 year, so start looking now and putting together application materials (essays, resume, etc.)

I was pretty successful in my undergrad at getting scholarship money, but most of it either came from my university (U of A) or my province (Alberta). A relatively low amount of money came from other external sources. So keep that in mind when looking.

Most people don't know this, but learning a trade is the best route to take.

I'm in grade 10 and have already started applying, there are scholarships you can get when you are younger, keep that in mind. So keep looking! Also, don't just look at scholarships that award more than $1000 because guaranteed they will be the most competitve a lot of people only go for the larger sums of money so if you go for smaller ones you'll have a better chance! Most people don't apply for essay scholarships either or any scholarship that 'takes too much work' so definitly look at those too. Once you get into grade 12 though spend a lot of time looking at scholarships and applying with the best of your ability. Remember you can not get a scholorship if you just look and never apply! A lot of people want to gte scholarships look at them and just don't apply. Big mistake! I'm planning to pay for like half my tuition on scholarships so that's why I've started so young. My cousin applied to many scholarships and actually made enough money that way for her tuition! She didn't even need a part-time job to afford University and that's also my goal. I don't have the time for a part-time job so yeah. But good luck on finding scholarships!:)

I applied for a scholarship for electrical engineers once and got it, even though I'm in mechanical. Like kelso547 said, lots of the smaller scholarships are a lot less competitive, and the amounts add up. It's really nice to be able to afford university no problem.
