Hi guys, I need to choose either McGill or U of A soon but I am still hesitating. Advice PLEASE! I have got the offer for Material Engineering Co-op in Mcgill and first year general engineering in U of A.
Here's the info: U of A Pros:
1. Cheaper in cost of living and tuition fee. More job opportunities, Highest salary and lowest tax when working because I plan to take to co-op program.
2. English-Speaking Region.
3. I have partial scholarship but the amount is pretty small.
Cons: 1. No guarantee you will get into the program you like in the second year as you must compete with others in the first year and get high average in general engineering then only you choose which field you wanna major in but I have confidence that I can ace in the first year.
2. Rank 100th in the world
3. Extremely cold
McGill Pros: 1. Top 25 universities in the world
2. Guarantee a place in Material Engineering Co-op
Cons: 1. Have to spend time learning French
2. Very expensive and no scholarships
3. failing rate higher, more assignments and stress
HELP ME! Which one should I go? I have to make decision soon.

What do you want to do with your degree? Alberta is the land of oil and gas, not that you can't work in other industries, it's just much easier to work in those industries once you graduate. Plus if you do co-op at the U of A, that's likely an industry where you might work. I went to the U of A for my undergrad in mechanical engineering if you want to ask me any questions. I'm now at U of T for grad school

HELP ME! Which one should I go? I have to make decision soon. Your pros and cons aren't good ones. For example, U of A's and McGill's international rankings shouldn't matter at all. Secondly, you don't have to know a lick of french to attend McGill. Also, you won't necessarily be more prone to stress or failing if you attend one school over the other... and I don't know why you think you'll have more assignments at McGill than at U of A.

Gorges26 is right, don't choose one over the other because you think it will be easier, because you will be disappointed.

Thanks guys! I already know the syllabus of my first year engineering at U of A and I have studied half of it. However,I am still not guaranteed a place in the co-op program in the 2nd year at U of A, I have to get really great GPA at least 3.5 to get it.
But it's true. If you get into McGill, you will have to compete with other TOP students around the world so it's not gonna be easy right?
If you were me and considering the pros and cons above, which one will you choose?

You act like there's not top students at U of A. There were definitely more than a few outstanding students. In my graduating class I knew people who went on to grad school in Canada and the States, people who got into med school and people who got awesome jobs right after graduating. McGill isn't going to be easy, but neither will the U of A. I don't want you to think that choosing U of A will be the easier option.
Are you sure you need a 3.5 GPA to get into co-op second year? Unless the program has become a lot more competitive I don't think it's that high. I know a lot of "average" students who made it into the co-op program.
I don't think your pros and cons list is accurate, so based on that I can't give you a choice. Not that I would choose for you anyways, only you can decide which university and city you would prefer. Things that shouldn't matter to you: perceived difficulty (because they both will be similar) and reputation. Things that should matter to you: the city, the social life, general first year or not, co-op or not, job opportunities, etc.

As far as rank and reputation go they're both great but McGill is better. It's almost impossible to get a job in Montreal without knowing French, and if u wanna immigrate to Quebec u can forget about it. "Cheaper in cost of living and tuition fee", that shouldn't be a factor unless u really can't take a loan or save more money, you can't put a price on a good education.
Even though I prefer McGill I'd choose Alberta if I were u, first of because of the language, second because most of the jobs these days are in Alberta so you're gonna end up there anyway.
Good Luck.

^ Money should definitely be a factor. I'm quite happy that I was able to graduate from university with over $15,000 in savings. You will get a good education at any Canadian university.

Yes it's really tough for international students to get co-op program. We must get almost perfect score to get it.maybe lower for engineering students.
By the way, i am going to U of A!!!! Thanks everyone
