I'm an old fart and don't recognize most of the artists/songs mentioned here. Not necessarily my favourite songs of all-time but certainly the ones that I've been listening to a lot lately: If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot A VERY soothing song. Disarm by Smashing PumpkinsFriends in Low Places by Garth Brooks Fun song to sing to, but I'm fairly convinced you have to be from Alberta or from the Southern States to have heard it. Stoked for Warped tour this year! Those have to be the worst band names I have ever heard. I don't think you can be that big of a music fan if you can narrow down your collection to a few songs. I'd have trouble listing my ten favorite artists, let alone songs.

I'm with Zion. Personally, I think really liking a particular song has more to do with over-identification (whereby one's knowledge of their liking a song reinforces the fact that they like the song, forming a positive feedback loop) than with some sort of innate personal aesthetic preference where the song "vibrates the eardrum in just the right way". If you really try to deconstruct why you like a given song so much, outside of technical merit, there's virtually a limitless amount of subtleties one can choose to justify why so, and the cause is therefore overdetermined, which is why I choose identification rather than some sort of cognitive determinism. (Citing lyrics has to do both with technicality and identification, btw.) University of Toronto, Victoria College, 2015, BA. Tentative: Philosophy Specialist, Cognitive Science Major; Philosophy Specialist, Comparative Literature Major

I completely disagree. Having a few favourite songs doesn't mean you're not "that big of a music fan", it means you have songs that you favour over others. That's it. Nothing to criticize. Also, you're disregarding the emotional connotations some songs have for some people.

I have many songs that I listen to and I have a new favourite song pretty much every week. Though, if I had to choose my favourites (based on how many plays), they would be: - Right Above It by Lil Wayne - Rhythm of Love by Plain White T's - My Boots by Lights My favourite song at the moment is Words I Never Said by Lupe Fiasco featuring Skylar Grey. **Shields** Accepted: University of Toronto: Social Sciences + Vic One (Pearson Stream) Carleton University: Honours Science University of British Columbia: Arts

I'm inclined to agree to some extent. I have songs I really enjoy, but to be honest, my favourites depend on my mood. Ah, well, I guess I'll stop being pretentious and post some that I love. Though I still think "vibrating the eardrum in just the right way" plays an important role; just a lot more so with your initial liking of a song. On my first hearing of a song, I can generally tell if it will become one of my favourite songs or not. Over-identification is simply not possible at that point.
