Hello, I am currently a student in the Extended French program (high school). What average do I need to get accepted into U of T, Mac, UWO, Mcgill? ( My parents say I should go to U of T Erindale campus) Do # of volunteer hours/ school clubs increase my chance? Which is a better uni for undergrad and why? ( I've heard U of T is not so good). What advice would you give me/ any other important info I should know abt? Do the chances of a French Immersion certificate improve my chances? Then, I want to go to Dental school/ Med school...not sure yet but I currently like Dentistry. Also what are the pros and cons of U of T, Mac, UWO and Mcgill? ( life/ health sciences) Thx... **Shields** Accepted: University of Toronto: Social Sciences + Vic One (Pearson Stream) Carleton University: Honours Science University of British Columbia: Arts

I would say for all 4 of those schools.. at LEAST a 90%.. definitely at least a 90 for Mac and McGill. Might be able to cut it close with high 80's for U of T or UWO. Yes, volunteer hours and activities increase your chances, especially if they ask you to complete a supplementary application. U of T is just as good as any other, but I've heard that it's harder to maintain a high GPA, same with McGill. I would say Mac is the best of the 4 for Health Sciences. If you include the French Immersion part somewhere in the supplemental, it might give you a few brownie points.. can't hurt to brag a little. :) University of British Columbia '15 Bachelor of Science Major in Biology

Well, what kind of average do you have now? My one advice is to organize and plan out your schedule of courses, if you're in grade 12. Don't take allll the hard and academic courses in one semester just to "get it out of the way". I can't really tell you how to get a 90% average, it really depends on the the individual and your study habits. I'm pretty sure there's little things here and there that you can change, though. There's plenty of options with an 83-87. If you do the supplemental for most of the schools, you still have a chance at getting in.. especially if you're in the 87 range. There's also other less "well known" schools you could apply for that have just as good programs but don't require their students to be a genius coming out of high school. I don't know the disadvantages because I'm not in university myself. But the things that I may consider an advantage could be a disadvantage for you. :P For example, I know that UWO is a pretty party oriented school; I see that as a good thing because I'm a very social person and love parties, but you might not think the same. BlueBeach, I gather you may be in grade 10 or 11 based on the questions. You would already be complete on your applications if in grade 12. I applaud you for looking at this now so you can be better prepared when the time comes. My general thoughts on your questions. If you want to do Health Science at any of these schools, the entrance is very competitive and you need to be thinking 90+ average for your grade 12 courses. All 4 will also look at your grade 11 marks as well. Get your grade 11 average above 90. For MAC & McGill you should be thinking 92+ and be prepared to spend quality time on your supplemental. This link will show you examples of the cut offs (McGill & MAC). http://www.mcgill.ca/applying/standards/ontario/
http://registrar.mcmaster.ca/forms/canad.php
Extensive extra Curricular's are mainly useful for major Scholarship applications, but you can also weave them into the supplementals. Read the MAC supplimental questions here. http://registrar.mcmaste...a/future/supp-apps.html
Life science at these schools generally has lower cut offs. MAC life science indicates mid to high 80's cutoff. I don't think the French Immersion gives you a significant edge in applying. I would mention being bilingual and try to bring it up in the suppl if you can. You might also consider U of Ottawa which does have specific consideration for Bilingual instruction and has health related sciences. They generally have lower entrance requirements and may pony up some entrance money as well. Also, as you will find in this forum, you do not need to go into Health science to later apply to medical/dental school. Do get your 1st year sciences and 2nd year organic to prepare to write the MCATs. Do be actively involved in EC's (high school & Unni). Cheers

hey, i'm currently in gr 11 and in your almost your exact predicament! :P what high school courses are you taking... just out of curiosity... because all i took was -advanced functions -university biology -university chemistry -university physics -French immersion -university English -fitness/health -religion(French) i wasn't really sure what i needed, but i really want to make sure i know what to take in gr 12, so that i have all the mandatory prerequisites(btw French is a bonus if you want to go into dentistry especially in Canada, because as a dentist you are required to work with a lot of people and obviously French is popular in Canada, it's a definite bonus to be bilingual.)
also did you ever find out the exact average that u of t is looking for to get accepted into life sciences? because i want to get my degree there and then just try to get into their dentistry program so that i can do it all in one place. i remember reading you need a 75-80 on the website, but i know it's competitive, so you obviously need a lot higher, but for a project i need to know the exact percent average...
if someone could help that would be amazing, i'm sooo confused!

For U or T, you should get into the Life Science program with a 80 average(including prerequisites). My friend got accepted there last year, her average was only 77%(she also was accepted to Waterloo's Life Science program) MacMaster, I believe the cutoff is around 85% for Life Sci. UWO will accept you if you have mid 80s. McGill is the most competitive of them all. The Life sci program is high ranked in the country. The cutoff if 90%. UT, Mac & UWO won't look at your ECs during your high school career. Not sure about Mcgill.. Your French immersion should not improve your chances. If you plan on going to Med or Dental school, do many ECs relating to the program during your undergraduate studies. Admission officers like to see applicants who are well rounded.

U of T has a pretty competitive life science program...maybe mid 80's cutoff and high80's low 90s to be safe. Mac health science is insanely competitive and anything below a 90 has almost chance. But once your past that 90 average, it's basically all on your supplementary application (or so I hear) Mac life science has lower standards, maybe low-mid 80's cutoff. Not entirely sure about UWO, but mid-80's should be good enough, and high-80's will almost guarantee (but again, not sure) McGill, like said before is probably more competitive than all the others (except maybe Mac) but cutoffs are near mid-high 80's I think, probably close to high 80's. You'll need at least 90's to be safe. However, if you wanna go to dental/medical school, you should go to a school where you can get high marks. Not saying avoid U of T or McGill because they are more renowned than UWO or anything, but people seem to constantly complain that U of T gives low marks, which ruins your chances for grad school. But then again, they could just be trolls. lol. I don't think french immersion improves your chances or anything, but you could talk about how you're bilingual in your supplementary applications or something of that sort I guess? There is no "exact percent" at which a university will accept/reject you. It changes every year because a different number of people apply with different grades every year, and they can only accept so many people into a particular program. Thank you everyone for your wonderful answers. I'm just sad since I discovered my French along with 3 other languages wouldn't help :( But, I currently volunteer at a retirement home. Is it worth it...in terms of experience? Also what are the pros and cons of each school ( U of T, Mac, UWO and Mcgill) for life sciences **Shields** Accepted: University of Toronto: Social Sciences + Vic One (Pearson Stream) Carleton University: Honours Science University of British Columbia: Arts
