I'm trying to decide between two universities, let's call them A and B. A is the ideal school (campus, location, social atmosphere, etc.), but B has a better program (more course options and slightly stronger departments for what I'm interested in). When I actually compare the programs course-by-course though, it looks like I'd only have to take about four courses that I'm not really interested in for my major at A (while at B, I wouldn't have to take any of them). Is the program issue enough to keep me from going there? Queen's Commerce 2015

I actually chose my school because of the program. It's the only university, actually I'd say it's the only school in Canada with the program. I didn't really pay attention to the campus when I accepted. The school isn't bad I suppose, but there are a lot better schools out there. I commute though, so the campus doesn't really affect me all too much. I would say choose the school that has the better program-unless you really really despise the school and campus (etc.). In the end, if the program and department is stronger that means you'll be better trained for a job once you finish school. If you're really partial to school A though and are willing to accept its program's faults, then choose that one. You don't want to be miserable in university, trust me-it's a long four years.

I'm making my decision mainly based on the school and not the program. Some people have told me this is a bad idea, but I'm willing to sacrifice a little bit to go to McGill, and by no means would I be getting a subpar education. McGill Desautels 2015

I would choose school "B" because in the long term, program really matters more, unless "B" is in Kabul or something... Δεν ελπίζω τίποτε. Δεν φοβούμαι τίποτε. Είμαι λεύτερος

Recruiters, employers, and grad schools in Canada will recognize the better program. If you are thinking about going international though, the better university name will probably matter more. **Shields** Accepted: University of Toronto: Social Sciences + Vic One (Pearson Stream) Carleton University: Honours Science University of British Columbia: Arts

Assuming your post-university prospects would be about the same between the two schools (aka the difference in qualities between the program isn't that huge), I'd say A. If the program makes quite a difference though, then go to B, chances are you'll find yourself loving that school too. University of Waterloo - Biochemistry Co-op (2014)

If the facilities and services arent TOO bad.. then go for the program, not the school. thats more important in the long run. UW Software Engineering 2015Check out my blog, where I talk about school, coop terms, and other random stuff :)

I'm sort of in the same boat as christinams. The program I was looking for wasn't really encountered in Ontario so I went to a school in Alberta to get exactly what I wanted. The program is fantastic and no other university program comes close to what I'm studying. I've sort of already answered the question, but to reiterate I prefer program over school. The University of Lethbridge isn't that big compared to some of the other schools that some SAers are going to (Waterloo, Toronto, McGill etc) and although Macleans had it at No. 4 under Primarily Undergraduate Schools, the fact that it has the program I'm looking for vastly outshines the school that its at. I got acceptances to the University of Toronto, Acadia University and Huron College at Western and although those schools are better than the UofL, they didn't have what I was looking for. I'd go with B. You'd get a better education in what you're getting an education in. That's besides the fact, that jobs and grad schools (depending on what you want to do) will know which schools have the best in a certain program and will recognize that. UWO Nursing 2014
