I would like to give a big thank you to Dr. Altay Coskun in the University of Waterloo's Department of Classical Studies. Dr. Coskun introduced me to the wonders of the Latin language in LATIN 101 this past fall. He has provided me with a number of opportunities, but I am especially grateful for his invitation to a bi-weekly Research Colloquium in Roman History, as I have learned so much about Ancient Rome from my fellow students.

Thank you Dr. Coskun for inspiring me to pursue Classical Studies as one of my majors and instilling in me a love of Latin!

Just finished my first year of Broadcasting and Film at Centennial College, and if it wasn't for one professor at my school who was always there to talk and pushing me to my full potential, I'm not sure if I would of made it through! Shel Reisler, Professor and Coordinator of the Broadcasting and Film Program always found time out of his busy schedule to help me when I was stressing out, or just needed someone to talk to. I'm glad to get an opportunity to share how one person has helped push me one step closer to my career goal, believed in me, and most importantly made me start believing in myself and showing me that my dream is closer than I thinkcheers

I would like to thank my counselor, Ms. Hamilton. You helped me in my first year of high school answering all my questions, and helping me catch up after missing two months. I would also like to thank you for helping me during my last year in high school, there were moments where I was in your office in tears but you assured me and helped me make decisions that I could not have made myself.

Thank you for working tirelessly, ensuring that students are on the right path to education!

I would like to thank my high school math teacher, Mr. Hebabi, for being an awesome teacher! Being in IB was very stressful and he was the only teacher that helped ease that stress. He always cracked jokes and made sure that everyone remained sane! If someone was having a bad day or going through a rough time, he would understand. His compassion was incredible, but he wasn't a pushover! He constantly motivated us to do our best. And he made sure the class was interesting. Not only was he wise, he was very knowledgeable; I could talk to him about anything, and I would end up learning something new. He was amazing at explaining things (he made Calculus easy) and was always happy to help! I truly appreciate having him as a teacher; anyone who has had him knows what I'm talking about, and everyone who has him next year is extremely lucky! :) Merci beaucoup M. Hebabi!

I want to say "Thank You" to my favorite Prof. Roopa Desai! She is the singular most amazing person I know. She has helped me tremendously by showing me how to tap into my potential. Thanks to her, I had the best academic year this year (2011-2012). She taught me how to make the best of difficult situations, how working hard is not optional, and that you reap what you sow.

It is due to her that I achieved such high marks and passed all my courses with A's.

Thank you Roopa for everything!

Thanks is truly never going to be enough for everything this teacher has given me. You hear about those teachers that change your life, and make you become a better person and push you to something greater, better, but you never think it could happen to you. You think that it could happen in the movies but as if it would happen in real life. Although, when it does it is truly the most incredible, remarkable thing.

Ms. Darcy Deihl from WVSS, I have to thank you for being that teacher, who gave me that ever needed confidence to push me in the direction I have always needed to go. It wasn't showing me something that I didn't know before so much as showing me the potential I had already and how I could use that. I had always excelled in school prior to your chemistry classes, but you fired in me a passion that I had not had before. Grades to me prior were a form of perfection, of feeling adequate and achieved. But I learned what it was to be passionate about something and love it with everything I had. Chemistry made complete sense and finally I had a path, a reason to excel in mathematics and sciences.

I chose the direction of chemical engineering, and it was the greatest choice I have ever made in my life. The love of chemistry you showed me has made me strive for learning more and teaching those around me. It gave me empowerment and for that I am forever grateful. Engineering is largely still very male dominated in its percentage of student population, but you gave me that belief in myself to entirely push beyond my comfort zone through witnessing of your own self-confidence. I am in a degree I feel extremely proud of and going a direction that feels entirely right. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU.

A good educator doesn't just teach the subject matter; he or she elicits interest and passion for the topic, and nurtures students' abilities, arming them with the tools for not only academic success, but success in general.

Such educators are rare; I consider myself lucky to have met one such individual, an educator with heart and a willingness to mentor.

Erin Sterner (PSY344, University of Saskatchewan) made my advanced behavioral neuroscience laboratory a genuine experience in undergraduate level research. Using what limited resources she had, Erin ensured that all her students had hands on experience designing an experiment and running it. She took great personal pains to take very small groups (2-3 students each) into the lab for individualized wet work, and always made time to address students' questions and concerns. She even spent personal time answering questions regarding topics outside of class, and gave me a great deal of advice regarding grad school application strategies and how to get extra research experience. She was always positive and kind (even when I asked some rather obtuse questions!) and always held the respect and attention of the class.

So, thank you Erin! Thanks to your efforts and enthusiasm, I had a great PSY344 experience and an awesome semester overall. You are an inspiration, and I feel like my grad school prospects are not so bleak after all! And most of all, thank you so much for listening to all my concerns and mentoring me - I truly appreciate it. I hope you teach more classes in the future - you are a gem, and I'd certainly recommend any classes taught by you to my peers (and they could definitely use an instructor like you!)

Thank you!

I would just like to thank Valerie Laverdure from Champlain Regional College-Lennoxville for being such an excellent teacher! She goes above and beyond the requirments of a teacher. She is always there with a helping hand to get her students through rough times and her office is always open when we have questions about an exam, a assignment or if we have troubles at home. She has really helped me this year and I am extremly lucky to have had a teacher like her!

My answer is a little different from the responses that I've skimmed from this thread, but the lessons I learned from my professor, Stacy Berg (sessional professor, GPRC in Grande Prairie AB), are just as important as the lessons learned about academia.

I joined the Introduction to Drama course expecting some study and maybe a little bit of practical work (it is a Drama class, after all), but what I learned outside the curriculum has helped shape me in ways that traditional academia like Math and English never will: the importance of human connections, and how important trust is.

I'm currently studying to be a teacher, and the courses I've taken have all demonstrated the importance of establishing the student-teacher relationship by building trust. There are different methods of teaching, but having this relationship is key to any student's success. Stacy didn't just teach me this, she demonstrated it every day.

My class began with 20 strangers, and by the end of the semester we were closer than we were with friends we'd known for years, because Stacy established an environment where we could trust each other and be truly open. She was always honest and encouraged us to be honest with each other, which allowed us to trust one another. We also knew that we would be trustworthy for the others around us, because that was the example she set. Stacy didn't just preach her lessons, she practiced them. If we asked her to share something or be open, she would do it; she would be able to do it because she trusted us as much as we trusted her.

We shared a lot with each other this semester, and the relationships we built in just four months are relationships that I can see lasting years. Even if we don't see each other every day, we've seen so much of each other - who we really are - that we simply can't go back to being strangers. My experience in Stacy's class really showed me how deeply people can bond in any length of time if the environment is right. It wasn't just about the serious moments where we broke down together - because when one of us wasn't feeling right it honestly affected the group - but it was also about the ridiculous moments where we were all acting crazy or silly or weird. It's very difficult to challenge someone as a primate without losing the moment, but we knew that we could trust everyone to participate so we went for it.

I repeat the word trust so much because for a very long time - so long that I'm not even sure when it happened - I wasn't able to trust anyone, even people I would call my best friends. Stacy saved me because she helped me open myself up to people and learn that sometimes the risk is worth the reward. I can only hope I can demonstrate that same caring in my own teaching practice and help my own students learn more than what's printed in a text book. Thanks Stacy, for more than I ever thought I would receive from you!

I'd like to thank my grade 4 teacher mr. Peters because he helped me understand that I don't need to change myself for people to like me and that regardless of what I'm going through, there could always be something worse

Mr. Valerian,

I’ve been reading through some of my old journals and I barely recognize who I was then. Everything I wrote was so sad.

Elementary school years were brutal for me because I was bullied. I remember fearing school each day, and going home in tears. I thought it was strange we gave speeches on anti-bullying, yet many people, teachers and students alike, chose to ignore the harassment that went on around the school, except you. You did not tolerate bullying. Mr. V, you have helped me confront my bullies. You were the one who made me hopeful –the one who stood up for me. My days have been getting brighter ever since and I begin to see more, learn more. Today, I know a different kind of sadness. I’ve learned many others have gone through a similar experience, but a great teacher makes all the difference.

I've wanted to write you a letter a while now. Just a simple one, enough to tell you how genuinely grateful I was to have you as my teacher. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Vivian
