I am a student who currently has an overall average of 90.5%, and without considering my Adv-Function mark within my top six, I hold a 92%. I've applied to many universities, however, I haven't gotten any replies from Schulich, Queens, Waterloo-AFM and Rotman Commerce. I have strong EC's, I am the President of my school, and an Executive member in 3 other clubs. How does it look in terms of me receiving an offer of admission to these universities?

Also what university would be the best pick for the field of finance or accounting. If anyone can give me an overview on any of the universities I've listed above, it would be much appreciated. I need an outlook as to how that universities lifestyle is and what benefits they offer compared to others.

Things I'm looking for (random):
- Professional Environment
- Opportunities for networking
- Job opportunities (BIG 4)
- High reputation
- Top tier education
- Best path to become CA/CFA
- Diverse society
- strong curriculum

First, all of these schools will include AF in your top 6, so you're looking at an average of 90.5.

That average is probably a little low for Schulich. I wouldn't say you're 100% not to get in, but I definitely wouldn't be surprised if you didn't. Your ECs sound good but they have a big focus on marks. The majority of students have yet to receive acceptances.

Queen's will depend on your PSE/essays. They don't take marks into consideration once you're past 87. If you wrote well you'll likely get in as you have great ECs from the sounds of it. Don't worry most students are still waiting for acceptances.

Rotman I'm not as sure what their admissions criteria are but you have a very good chance. I'd be surprised if you didn't get in (although apparently they have wacky admissions). Most people have yet to be accepted.

Waterloo AFM has not sent out any acceptances (May 11 apparently). It will all come down to your AFMAA and what co-op option you applied to. Your average may be a tad low for CA but if your AFMAA was good you can still get in no problem.

As for what school:

Eliminate Rotman.

The three remaining schools will all be good choices. For some of those (high reputation, professional environment, job opportunities in finance, top tier education, etc.) Queen's is excellent for, for others (professional environment, opportunities for networking, diverse society, etc.) Schulich is excellent for, and for others (job opportunities for Big 4, best path to become CA/CFA, strong curriculum, etc.) Waterloo is excellent for. They all have their pros and cons and it will be up to you to decide which school best matches your needs. Want a diverse school and a professional environment located in a big city where you can network all the time? Go to Schulich. Want a school with a high reputation, an enthusiastic and motivated student body, located in a classic university town, also with great recruitment for finance jobs? Go to Queen's. Want a school that has a huge focus on both accounting and finance and gives you the opportunity to do both, has co-op and many opportunities with the Big 4 and other firms, and has some exemptions for designations and such? Go to Waterloo.

Thank you so much! Your information came to be very helpful.

If you don't mind, can you please elaborate on why Rotman would NOT be a good choice? Also, I would love to know your opinon on which university would be best to choose, maybe if you were in my position...and why?

if your into finance

1. queens
2. western ivey
3. schulich
4. rotman

if your into accounting

1. waterloo
2. schulich
3. queens
4. western ivey

if your into marketing

1. schulich
2. western ivey
3. queens
4. rotman

so eliminate rotman like the guy said above, or it can be your backup just in case you don't get in to the other programs. but i am pretty sure you will get into to all of them soon if you have good ecs and wrote the supp essays well ( 90.5 is still a good competitive average ). i know 2 people this year who got into schulich with 90 average so don't worry. as for queens, they are the pickiest so there is no guarantee but i think you stand a good chance. waterloo afm is probably the place where you have the least chance to get into.

either way~ all of them are top business schools in canada, you can't go wrong by going to any one of them. the rankings above is just my opinion based on what i heard/read from senior students, teachers, recruiting reports, curriculum, news and etc. so dont quote me lol.

I'm on the same boat. I've applied to Queen's Commerce, McMaster Business 1, Laurier BBA, Schulich, Western w/ Ivey, and Rottman Commerce. I haven't been accepted anywhere and I have a 95.33% average.

Just wait it out.

As another poster mentioned, Rotman is just good. They have an excellent MBA program, but they do not put the same amount of effort into their undergraduate program. I find a lot of Rotman students are unsatisfied and you find a higher portion recommend you to another school than you would QC, Schu or AFM students. They don't get incredible recruitment. Another poster was saying there's a lot of international students or other students who are terrible at communicating and keep to themselves, which isn't really the greatest environment to go to. I also don't hear about Rotman hosting competitions and going to and winning competitions and stuff. It's also a commuter school. So overall I don't see why someone would choose it over a top business program.

I'm making a similar decision (should I be accepted), and right now I'm kind of leaning towards AFM. I keep switching (last week it was QC) but I think I've switched to AFM more often than the others. I really like the option to double specialize and I like how there is co-op so you can work in the busy season for accounting jobs, and the building and students seem awesome. It's a tough decision though lol. Can't really go too wrong. Getting rejected would also make the decision easier :P That's the only positive out of being rejected.

You'll get in Schulich IF your SAF was good. I know they're really paying attention to the SAF this year.
Queen's... Your ECs are really good. As long as your PSE was good, you're definitely in.
Rotman - don't go there.
Waterloo - a bit difficult to get into (I dunno HOW hard or requirements to get in cuz I didn't apply) but definitely go there IF, and only IF, you're 100% set on accounting. Otherwise, go to Schulich. Schulich is great for Accounting, but doesn't restrict you to accounting alone.

If you want to go into Finance, avoid Schulich and go to Queen's.

I do my believe my essays and supplementary forms were written strong. However, I do have another concern.. Say for example, I do get accepted into any of these universities, since my average is just at the cut off, does that mean I won't be able to excell and achieve high grades once in the program? This has been a worry of mine from the beginning.. I dont want to go to university and then encounter a situation where I'm intellectually incapable to face.. Then again, I'm sure I'm over thinking the heck out of this whole university choice issue.

Waterloo doesn't limit you to accounting. It's accountingAND finance.

There's an advantage at Schulich being in the heart of Toronto, and it does hav a little bit better inroad into corporate banking and other jobs at investment companies because of this and the past successes of some of their students, but Waterloo has a good reputation with many of the industry CATOs and some other large companies, as well as the big 5 banks and the large insurance companies that have a strong base in the KW area. There's some recruitment from hedge funds and pension funds still too.

Ideally if you'r interested in finance Schulich's a bit better (although QC, Ivey and McGill are better than it), but Waterloo doesn't limit you to just accounting.

No, don't worry about that. As long as you work hard, you'll be fine.

Just remember that a lot of these kids that get in go to private schools, or have easy schools in rural areas so easily get high marks. Lots of kids brag about that too - "Yeah my school's SO easy! I get the easiest marks without doing anything! I've got a 95 in calc!"

They probably do have a 95 in calc, but you probably know more than them (which they easily admit)

Not saying that all rural schools are like that, but some are.

Long story short - don't worry about not doing well. You'll do well anywhere as long as you do your readings and don't fall behind.

Don't worry about it. High school marks don't translate very well to university. Maybe on a big interval (someone with a 95 versus someone with a 75) you will on average notice a difference, but when everyone is 87+ minimum it comes down to work ethic, your ability to understand how to do well in university, underlying smartness, etc. The bigger concern is whether you can shut out distractions in university (living on your own, no one watching your back, etc.) and put in the necessary time to do well.

Hey,

I was wondering if anyone knows about Ivey? Some people I know that went to Schulich and Rotman said it wasn't as good as they expected, but I don't know anyone who's in Ivey :/

I haven't heard anyone complain about it really. A couple people in accounting I talked to said that they felt like they were kind of wasting money and effort being at Ivey while friends in other programs were able to spend less money, work less hard or focus on other things and get to the same place. This is why you don't see too many people recommending Ivey for accounting.

But, everyone else I know say the case method really helped them and swear by it, and everyone is happy with the type of placements that students are able to get. You might find the odd student who wasn't able to get much and thought they could just waltz in and work at Goldman Sachs (but there's also a chance they wouldn't even make it to Ivey or fail Ivey itself). You'll find that almost anywhere though.

This is a really bad way to rank business schools as it is not that simple. Every single business program that people talk about on here is about all of these things in equal qualities and ranking them based on what people say is kinda silly. You can get into any section of any industry pretty easily through any of the Ontario Business schools.

Based on your pretty vague goals and wide selection of schools, I'd reckon that regardless of the school you end up going to, you'll be fine. Don't take any of the late acceptances or rejections personally (even though they're pretty much saying that they hate you) and just understand that through your own hard work/determination in university, you can go anywhere you want.

Objectively, I would definitely say you get into Rotman/AFM, with more or less of a coin toss on the other two programs. Good luck and stay positive.

P.S

woah ivey ppl.. dont get offended by my post ... it's just my opinion.. and creed you said its silly to rank them but i think its silly for you to contradict on what i said~but youre right~ its not that smiple to make comparisons. they are all good schools and it really depends on the individuals on how well they use and take advantage of the opportunities that are given to them.

but tell me ~ you think ivey has a better reputation on accounting than waterloo ?waterloo can make you a CA in 5 years because their curriculum covers so much more matierals. i guess finance is pretty arguable because ivey offers the most and among the best opportunities and connections to corporations on the same level as queens does with minor differences.

anyways i dont think i am lied to.. i only ranked them based on my opinion which is based on employment statistics, internship reports, curriculum, salary, network, and job opportunities, and etc. and i know they are not entirely true and its all very complicated and different. of course everyone says different things from their perspective.

so dont just say what i said is all wrong or its silly based on your opinion.
also please provide some valid reasons and supporting facts on why you think i am lied to instead of just putting a comment~

im just trying to help not misguide ppl.
