Doing a bit of ranting/ checking to see if anyone else who has applied to McGill is having similar problems..
Okay so, I applied to mcgill's life sci and arts/sci programs December 2nd... My application has been marked as "ready for review" since then. I phoned McGill multiple times (probably around 10-12 since march) inquiring about my application, the status of it, and about other general stuff. Each time I asked about the approaching admission deadlines, I was told the same thing... That no matter what, Ontario students are guaranteed to be accepted by the 18th. So, I waited patiently, despite the fact that I would only be depleting my chances of getting into a decent residence/receiving a major entrance scholarship at all of the other universities that I was accepted to. I waited because hey, it's McGill after all.
Now, now I'm just angry at the lack of care shown towards nervous and stressed out applicants by this school. Why? Well, I phoned them again today, and guess what I found out? They're delaying the deadline for admissions until mid-june. Yes, mid-freaking-June! Do they not even know that the deadline to accept an offer of admission at ontario schools is June 1st? Grrr, it's like they expect us to skip an entire year of school just to wait for them.
*sighs* /endrant
So, does anyone else feel enraged towards McGill right now?
:( I just want to be accepted into my dream school!
-Alex
Ps did I mention that I took the train from Toronto to Montreal, but couldn't go to campus connect because I haven't been admitted? Because yeah, that's another thing that happened to me today. :D

I know how you feel. Though, I can't say I've gone and trekked that far only to be turned away. That is pretty lame. Your frustration is understandable. A lot of us are still waiting for our first choice of school. Sadly, despite the fact that schools need us since we're the ones with the money, they are the ones in the power seat here. They can do what they want in terms of admission dates, no matter how inconvenient it is to applicants. As stressful as the wait will be -- especially with the deadline extended -- just hang in there.

As for what you will do about Ontario university deadlines, I think you should carry on AS IF you got rejected from McGill. Research the other schools, the courses offered, the campuses, etc. Find out which of the other universities you'd rather attend so that you've got your back up plan in place.

When May 31st rolls around, if you still haven't heard from McGill, accept the offer from your back up plan. Then, if in mid-June you receive an offer from McGill, you can cancel the other school and take up McGill's offer! If you pay a deposit to that other school, you might not get all of it back so keep that in mind. You probably won't have to pay anything that early, though, so you have nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the reply!
Hmmmm, I didn't even consider accepting another universities' offer than rejecting it if I do get into McGill. I thought that since McGill is affiliated with OUAC that my application there would be deleted if I were to first accept another offer. I guess it's worth a shot, as I have my alternate options lined up in order already..*suddenly feels super relieved*

That kind of attitude is exactly what turns me off about McGill... my biggest reason to want to go to McGill was basically, the city, and because it's so "reputable", but honestly the attitude of everyone there ticked me right off. I actually did get admitted, but declined immediately... Didn't think I could deal with 4 years of administrative red tape. Sorry about my little shpeal, you're set on McGill though and I'm sure it's still a lovely institution, despite my many prejudices haha. Sucks that you have to wait that long, definitely sounds frustrating, I'd hate to be in that position! Best of luck though!!

Haha, I'm glad I could bring you some sense of relief! Yeah, don't worry. Even though all the universities are connected on OUAC, none of the universities will be notified of anything if you choose to accept an offer. The only time they will be notified of anything is if you purposefully click the deny button on OUAC, or if you allow the offer to expire. McGill will have no idea you've accepted an offer elsewhere! Go ahead and accept your backup offer whenever you are ready while you wait on McGill. :)

OMG I am having the exactly the same problem! I had to call the office 3 times just to hear them say that I'll just have to wait. Btw, I'm from BC and I should've heard back from them LONG BACK IN APRIL. This is frustrating :( I applied to BComm program, and I know some people who got in with lower GPA avg than mine. So hopefully, I feel a bit more assured of my acceptance..I just really want to hear back from them before June 1 deadline.

Let's share our anxiety! lol

Just to add to what napinhei already said...u can even go ahead and register for the courses and still accept Macgill if they give you an offer and your earlier acceptance automatically gets cancelled. The only thing you lose is the partial rez deposit , since you need to send dep by June 1st assuming you are palnning to stay in the rez.

If I were you, I would've picked Carleton Journalism over McGill Arts. Carleton's journalism program is the best in Canada, with great co-op placements. I guess you made your choice based on school prestige rather than the actual program itself... and you are also turning down $16000? Anyways I wish you the best of luck with your studies.

Btw, this is an unbiased opinion, as I'm attending McGill next fall.

Ah, internet hasnt been working all week.
Thanks everyone once again for all of your responses! I accepted uOttawa (not the most reputable school but one of my main goals was to get as far away from home as I possibly could.. :P) so now I'll just wait until my application status at McGill is changed. I'm quite happy right now because after phoning McGill again, the woman I was talking to said that they're letting more out of province students in since the Quebec strikes have messed up with cegep student's schedules. Yaaay! I have still have a chance!

@different
Campus connect is a basically McGill's main campus tour event, where you see basically any part of the campus that you want to see. Only after not being allowed to join the tour did I find out that they weren't doing rez tours since a mass-renovation is taking place. Their residences were basically the only thing I wanted to see too! :P
I'm hoping that the application for arts was just different than the one for arts&sci and science, my application was basically just indicating that I wanted those programs and then submitting it, no surveys at all. :S

*fingers and toes and arms and legs are still crossed, it's really annoying to be dreaming about the status of my application changing on Minerva almost every night* pale

I have the same situation but a little bit different. I am an American Canadian so before coming to Canada for grade 12, I was in the US. I applied to McGill Art and also Arts and Science faculties. My top 6 U courses average is 90.33%. Since all universities look at top 6 U courses average for Ontario students, I was sure I will get into McGill. However, on May 19, instead of giving me an offer, they put a new requirement on my application. They want my US transcripts for grade 10 and 11. .. ahhh (frustrating)

I self uploaded my grades and I am still waiting to hear from them. I was worried about the deadlines for my other offers that I have from Ontario universities, but my guidance councelor told me to go ahead and accept one of them. She said I can decline it later if I get an offer from McGill.

What I don't understand is what the heck they need my grade 11 and 10 transcripts for. Like all the other universities,they should only look at my grade 12 courses.

I hope to hear from McGill soon!

So far, I have gotten into:
University of Toronto (st George) Arts and Science
Queen's university Arts and Science
Western Ontario Arts and Science

My average was a 90 on the dot. I retook two courses, so I'm hoping that they take the higher mark, otherwise I'd probably be rejected from them by now. Another person at McGill told me those who haven't been rejected or accepted yet have a pretty good chance of getting in. Then again, it seems like most of them haven't got a clue as to what is actually going on with admissions. I'm praying that the increased number of ontarians getting in is in fact true; for both myself and everyone else who's waiting. A few people actually pm'd me saying that they too got wait listed, gosh that screams unprofessionalism.
About the Rez renovations. No clue which ones, I was just told that I couldn't go on a Rez tour because of them. I'm putting Carrefour at the top of my list too! (followed by the new rez, la citadelle, since their site says its basically identical to Carrefour.
I think the only question I got asked about on my application was about sports that I'd like to join. Then again, this was in december. Remembering what I did yesterday is hard enough. xD

Just saw your post lmao, must've missed it. The only reason I could think of why they would do that is to narrow down their choices. With out of country students, universities always expect a bit more I guess. After all, to avoid any complaints from their students, they want to make sure that students get the most out of the money they're spending.
Good luck with your application! Hopefully you weren't one of those kids who slacked in your earlier grades and then suddenly became a genius in grade 12. ^.^'

@leoo (again)
I forgot to consider there that you may have possibly already obtained a Canadian citizenship, I was thinking that you'd have to pay the (probably) crazy prices that out of country students pay. If you do have citizenship here, disregard the first bit of what I just wrote. :P
I know that the typical transcript from Ontario has all of your grades from high school on it. It's ridiculous to look at earlier grades, but it could also be that they just want to see the complete thing? I don't even know.

My application was "Ready for Review" until they asked me to send them my transcripts from my school in the US. Now my status is " Further Review Required" because I had to upload my grade 11 and 10 marks. They didn't say anything about people who are wait listed. I hope your friend gets in. And yeah, I am hoping for Arts.

@actincorporated
I am positive. I accepted U of T's offer today, but I still have my fingers crossed for McGill.

I may purely be talking from nowhere on this one, but I've heard a lot about delayed decisions this year, and it may have something to do with the on-going tuition protests in Quebec.

I'm NOT looking to derail this thread into one about tuition hikes - I've discussed that issue ad nauseum, believe me - but in short, a third of the province's CEGEP and university students have been on-strike since February. On the 18th, the government of Quebec officially declared this past semester suspended until August for those that are on strike.

Since CEGEP students will be looking to enter universities, the concern is that a delayed semester for CEGEPs means that those students will also be entering universities later. If hundreds of freshmans couldn't get into university until, say, October, that would have disruptive effects on scheduling for the entire school. For a while in May, there were rumours floating around that McGill would delay the Fall 2012 semester by a month.

Before I scare anyone, they are not doing that, and their decision to begin regularly on September 4th was transmitted in a university-wide email this past Wednesday.

However, the uncertainty regarding the fate of the 300-400 CEGEP students expected to enter McGill next year may be why acceptance decisions are moving so slowly this year. Before the suspension of the semester, things were rather up-in-the-air, and McGill was chided last year for admitting too many students (and hence having to rent out two floors of a hotel for the whole academic year for first-years in need of residence housing.)

Edit: just read through the posts on the first page, and saw that my idea may not be original, as someone else briefly mentioned the strike :P Out of fairness and to deflect criticisms of plagiarism, I suppose my post can be regarded as fleshing out some of the "behind-the-scenes" stuff that's led to this debacle. Hopefully this will cool some of the flames of anger that's being directed at McGill, either its admin or its "atmosphere." In a way their hands are tied in this matter.

Undergraduates are walking cash registers for universities. McGill is not trying to spite you, or insult you, or turn you towards UOttawa. With luck, the situation will only ameliorate from here.

Thanks for the reply Hieronymus! I only knew briefly about the CEGEP situation, thanks for clearing all of that up. So don't worry about plagiarism; you were only contributing a lot more information that we all needed to hear.:)
I don't know, it just seems fairer to have the CEGEP student's university year delayed until next year. (Maybe that's just my own disagreement with their strikes/my own desires to be held in preference by McGill talking, I'm sure if I was a CEGEP student I'd feel differently...)
Meh, I'm just going to wait until I see "rejected" on my application before I even think about the problems in Quebec and how they may have been associated with my application.

For now I did accept uOttawa, I'm going to ask for my rez deposit to be delayed until I get word from McGill so I don't have to shell out more money that I don't have. Hopefully a delay in payment is possible...
