Hi everyone,

I want to apply for the Loran Award next year because I am involved in the community (have started some projects outside of school and clubs executive, etc in school -- will provide more info if needed) and my guidance counselor thinks I have a chance at becoming a Loran Scholar.

The problem is, this year in grade 11 I applied to Shad Valley and didn't get in. I was still on the waitlist when they were giving out acceptances. So now I'm really concerned. A lot of people say that Shad Valley is easy to get into, but if I didn't does this mean I'm screwed for the Loran Award too? I asked the Shad people to tell me what was lacking in my application but they just said they got a lot of really good applications and can't take everyone... no specifics.

So my question is, do both of these programs (and also TD scholarships) look for the same characteristics and criteria? If I didn't make it into Shad (so embarrassing) do I still have a shot at Loran?

Thanks!

Could it be your marks? I think I remember friends applying to Shad and being judged on their grades. However, Loran requires only an 85% average and TD is a 75% I believe. And for those scholarships, it's a strict cutoff, but you don't get any "bonus points" for having a higher average. In other words, once you have the 85% for Loran, marks aren't a factor for judging (I actually know someone who won Loran with an 85% on the dot).

Good luck next year, I wouldn't let this stop you from applying to Loran either way.

Thanks very much for the input! You might be right -- my marks were terrible when I applied! I had an 87 average at the beginning of the year, but now it's in the mid 90s. I really hope this is where I went wrong -- thank you so much for bringing it up!

That's great, glad I could be helpful. Congrats on the improvement too; mid-90s will make you eligible for most major entrance scholarships from universities. I'll be honest with you in saying that Loran and TD are VERY difficult to win. I would suggest looking up major scholarships at universities you want to apply to and see what they have as their selection criteria.

I understand what's going through your mind right now, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

The first is that in any process like program or scholarship applications, there is a lot of luck. It can sometimes be hard to tell what your chances really are because it often depends on who is reading your application and what the competition is like that year.

Secondly, the criteria for these applications are all different, and the applications themselves are all different. Just because you didn't make it into Shad, does not mean you don't have a shot at Loran/TD. Apply! What do you have to lose? Apply, apply, apply and hope for the best. I understand it affects you psychologically, but try to forget the past and focus on putting your best foot forward in the future.

Thirdly, it's not just about your resume - it's also about how you present that in the application. It is probably worth reviewing your Shad application with say your guidance counsellor/family/friends to see where there might be room for improvement in the way you present things on paper.

Good luck, and keep your chin up :)
