I am applying to universities this fall. I wanna go to Waterloo because they have coop programs. I am just not sure about their school spirit. Any comments on that?

Sometimes Waterloo may seem like it doesn't par with other schools when it comes to school spirit and the social scenes. But this is greatly because of coop streams dividing students every other terms. For example, if you ever join an orchestra and was in engineering program, you would only play with them every other 4 months. This does effect the overall spirit in my opinion. So far from what I experienced virtually through facebook groups, everybody is super friendly. A lot of the upper years are helping freshmen to figure out stuff already and the network is great. I personally don't think its worth going to Waterloo unless you're attending an Engineering/Math program, and maybe AFM-PA. There are probably better options out there, and from what I've seen, their co-op programs are only outstanding for Engineering and Math. I think there are better options in the Science/Business world. School spirit isn't something UW is known for, but I can't imagine it being that terrible. I mean... I doubt it can get any worse than high school haha. University of Waterloo: Systems Design Engineering Class of 2017

Depends on what you're looking for. I definitely agree we don't have as much spirit as other people, but does that really matter to you? Or are you an introvert? or a person that just wants to have an awesome group of people to hang out with every once in awhile? Thank you. This makes sense because Waterloo is famous for its coop program. It would be good if the network is friendly. Thank you.

Actually I am attending a high school with hardly any school spirit, and I don't want my uni life be like that again. That's why I was asking. Thank you for the advice.

It depends what you mean by "school spirit". Most people at UW aren't as excited as other schools about school sports - but that's just because that isn't what they are passionate about. Go visit MC on Pi day and try and say that UW has NO school spirit..... UW/WLU Math/Business DD - 2016 President - Double Degree Club

When I think of School Spirit I think of Queens, I heard their Homecoming is so notorious that they always have cops on high alert. Also I feel Schools outside of Toronto tend to have more school Spirit than the schools in toronto. My reasoning is, majority of the people who go to UT York or Ryerson live in toronto, hence they commute to school. If you get a school like Western students are kind of forced to live on REZ so they more school exposure.

I'm currently attending University of Waterloo and school spirit isn't as bad everyone is saying. May not have alot compare to Queens or Western but there are still people around that have alot of school spirit. However you will find most of school spirit in people in Arts. Waterloo doesn't have much spirit, everyone in Math/Engineering/Science programs are too busy with assignments, midterms, studying, etc. Arts students barely even have class to attend, so some of those people have spirit. If you want to party, there's lots of parties to go to- Laurier house parties are literally down the street from UW Place.
Example of our School Spirit: Apparently there was a Homecoming last weekend- barely anyone even knew about it whereas other schools have huge celebrations for it.
