thanks a ton bro, yea i kinda wanna go in saugeen but the problem is my parents probably do not want me to! I also wouldn't wanna be in medway cause I'm not down for the whole commute for food.

List it as one of your top choices for residence, if you get in the process for changing it is really tiresome, and your parents will have to let you go. ;)

I was wondering about the setup for the gender of rooms was in all the resident buildings (traditional and suite). Is it usually male - female - male - female.... and so on. Just curious. Also, are the floors pretty much an even split 50/50

btw this is a really great thread. idk if there are really any more questions that haven't been asked already but it would be awesome if this got started up again

The floors are a pretty even ratio but sometimes 60/40 or so. Engineering floors are often mostly male. And I'm pretty sure the MIT floor is generally mostly female.

As far as arrangement on the floor, it depends on the rez. The suite-style rezes alternate between male and female suites. Med-Syd has floors that are split down the middle (so you're always closer to the washroom). I'm not sure about Saugeen or Deli... maybe someone else could help you there?

And feel free to ask anything, there were a lot of things I wish I knew coming in, but I can't remember them all now...

Is it really inconvenient not to have RezNet? My parents think it's pretty expensive and I'm positive I'll never be able to use 4GB of bandwidth in one day nevermind the 10GB of on-campus bandwidth.
Would it be impossible to get an internet connection in my room if I don't have RezNet? Also, where are the most convenient places to get an internet connection in the residences?

Hey I've recently been offered admission and have a couple of questions.

I haven't accepted my offer yet - would I have to do so before I receive an offer of residence? Nowhere on the student center does it show this. I'm wondering because I just want to make sure the deposit is in and the questionnaire is completed before the dates. I've looked around and it seems that in past years the due dates for these have been before the last day you're able to accept your offer. Do you know when that will be this year or will it be disclosed in the package mailed to me?

I'm not sure about the order of accepting offers but I know that Western needs to receive your deposit by June 1st this year. This means that you should probably do it ASAP since the deadline is this Friday :P
As for the questionnaire, the deadline for that to be completed is June 6th. You'll still be able to complete it after that date but you might not get your preferences accommodated since the residence assignments will have already started.

Ok so I'm trying to decide between Elgin and Essex for my first choice. I'm in Science so i'd guess Elgin is probably closer to classes. Is there really any difference between the two other than location. Is Essex mainly engineers? Idk it's got an engineering floor; thought id ask. Im going to take a wild guess and say that the food is pretty much the same. Can the same be said for social aspects? Do floors tend to hang out together? I guess that is a question about all suite style residents... are people more likely to hang out with their roommates vs the rest of their floor? (from what I've read, traditional is very floor oriented)

I really like what I've read about Med-syd but I'm a little wary about not choosing suite style. its not like i cook a lot i just like the idea of an apartment style.

last question: is it a common occurrence for roommates to both bring a fridge? if so what usually happens, do you use both? can the fit?

Thanks

I didn't meet anyone during first year who didn't have RezNet. I mean if you are living in residence, then it actually is convenient to have it.

It won't be impossible. There are a few tricks you could pull. If your in a suite, there's an Ethernet port in the common area, so set up your own router there and you should be able to get wireless connection for you and your suitemates. My suitemates and I did that for some convenience (even though we all had reznet) but you get slower speeds with that than you would with the normal LAN connection in your own room.

They warn you NOT to set up a wireless router, but they don't do anything about it lol.

Hope that helps.

@ChouLace

You can have an external company come set up internet (at least in some rezes - London Hall for sure). I think Rogers has student deals... RezNet's just convenient.

They're very similar. Socially, they'll be basically the same. For any floor (regardless of the rez), it really depends on who's on your floor - some floors end up super close, others not. It's just chance as to which type of people end up together. For suite-style, people do tend to hang out with roommates, but there's usually a lot of floor bonding too. In any case if you're worried, you can be the first one to go visit other rooms!

Essex usually has two eng floors, but the rest is like any other rez. Elgin has the Scholar's Electives floor. Both of those cafes are only open on weekdays, so weekends and evenings you have to go to Med-Syd or Perth. Same food pretty much.

Mini-fridges: yeah sometimes both roommates bring them. I waited to speak with my roommate in first year so we shared. In suite style, you could have your own in your room. In traditional it can be a tight fit with two fridges but it can be done!

I was at saugeen and it was about a 50/50 guy/girl ratio on my floor, and the rooms alternate between guy/guy and girl/girl

@ChouLace

tbh Reznet sucks at night time (after 9pm) when everyone goes on and does their stuff. But in the end I think its worth it because of DC++ (basically a sharing program like Limewire where you can download movies, tv shows, music, games etc at a very rapid rate (1 mb/sec +)and only counts as internal data which is the 10gb limit) One thing with reznet though, do NOT go over the said limit (4gb ext/10gb int) They put you on a slow internet for 5 days which sucks.

I guess this doesn't really fit in this thread but what is a bird course for first year? I was thinking about astronomy? I'm pretty interested in that sort of thing so I'm considering that. I heard Psych is pretty easy, just a lot of reading. I also heard about Listening to Music; is that for real? Is it as easy as it sounds?

Choose what interests you. A bird course for one person may be a low mark for someone who doesn't enjoy it. I have a friend who took astronomy because she thought it would be like in Harry Potter, and was very disappointed... and disliked course for the rest of the year. Moral of that story: if you dislike your elective in the first couple classes, switch to another course. And astronomy is not star-gazing, sadly. Check out the syllabus before choosing electives if possible.

Personally, the easiest courses I've taken have been German 1030 and Psych 2070A, likely because I really enjoyed learning the material (since somehow the average in that psych class was 70 or something). Psych 1000 is a good course if it interests you. The concepts aren't difficult, it's just remembering all the terms, etc and fitting all the reading in.

Hey, Im staying in residence next year and I already completed my residence form a while ago. I went to go check my questionnaire recently on my residence log in under 'edit residence placement questionnaire'. but nothing is filled out. Now i'm kinda freaking out if I never submitted it (although I'm fairly certain I did) or if it always just shows up blank when you click it even if it has been filled out. SO my question is should I refill it out? Will this mess anything up?
thanks!

Check your UWO email for a confirmation. The system usually sends you a copy of all the choices you submitted, but the form in myResidence shows up blank every time. If you don't have a confirmation email then I'd redo it if I were you.

Hi guys, just have a question about London Hall res. I'll be going to Western in September for a grad program, and I'll be moving to London on my own so I won't know anybody!

I thought about applying to Glenmore firstly, but I don't want to live in a one-bedroom apartment, I imagine it's a bit lonely. For Glenmore you need to apply with a roommate for the 2-bedroom apartments there (and I know nobody!) so that option was ruled out. I saw on the residence website that London Hall was for upper-year undergrads and graduate students, so I threw in an application for there only a couple weeks ago. Surprisingly I have just been offered a place there!

However from reading forums/articles I discovered that last year (2011/2012) London Hall was 100% first years. Presumably that is not the case this year? Or else I would not have received an offer...? I did put down the "graduate floor" as my first preference in the application.

I'm really looking forward to meeting lots of people, being in a new city and university on my own... but I don't know if I'd fit in at London Hall if it's mostly first year undergrads. Would I be crazy to accept this offer as a new grad student? Can anyone give me some insight here on what London Hall will be like this year? Thanks!!

London Hall will likely be about 90% first year students. Last year there ended up being one floor that had about half upper-year students and the other half older frosh (mainly 19+), and then some other upper-year students were placed in suites with a residence staff member. The specialty floors are created by demand, so it's unlikely there will actually be a graduate floor, but I guess you never know!

But being an upper-year student in rez with first years can be a great experience if you interact with your floor. I volunteered (sophed) for the past two years in London Hall because I wanted to help frosh, and it was amazing. It will always hold a lot of happy memories and I'll be visiting more this year :) The atmosphere is great there, because it's small and more relaxed/low-key than other residences I've spent time in. There are of course a few frosh who drink a lot and get belligerent, but it's a small percentage. This past year I got to know a lot of awesome people (frosh, sophs, and staff), planned and attended many fun rez events and helped frosh with any school and life questions I could answer. For the record, I've got really high academic goals and I place high value on sleep and health, and I was able to maintain those quite well in rez. So if you get involved, you could end up being a positive influence and a mentor in the community. If that's not your idea of a good time, then you may not enjoy London Hall so much, and perhaps the apartments or other off-campus accomodation would be better.

Feel free to ask more about London Hall, and I'll do my best to minimize the bias!

Hi freebird, thanks so much for your response, I appreciate it.

So, I would be correct in assuming that as a grad student (I'm currently 22 years old) I would most likely be placed in a floor with other upper-year students? Or, at the very least, a suite with other upper-years? My main concern is that if I were to be placed with a first year roommate, or on a floor with 17/18 year old first years, that things may be slightly loud at night time. In terms of a roommate at least, I'd really hope to be with someone around my own age. Is this something I could expect if I choose to go to London Hall, or is there a chance I'll be with someone much younger? I'm not sure if I'd be able to relate to first year students as much anymore, so maybe that's something I need to consider before accepting my place. I expect my program to be quite intensive so sleep is important to me!

Your experience sounds great though and I'd definitely be interesting in something similar to get involved with the community outside of my grad program. It's just difficult to know the best option at this stage - I'm moving from abroad so res seems like a nice option to get to know people and the city before moving into off-campus accommodation next year. If you have any other info or advice you can think of regarding London Hall, I'd be happy to hear it! :) Thanks again.

It's extremely unlikely you would be placed with a first-year suitemate. You may end up with a second year though (staff or otherwise). I'm 22 as well and I felt like I could relate to most of the frosh well, apart from our differences in education experience.

I don’t really know how to give you all the info you need to make a good decision, so here’s an example of my daily experiences, and maybe you can judge from that?
Silent in the morning, might see a couple people. During the day it’s really quiet, some people around with doors open if you want to say hi. Around 5-7pm groups of people walk up and down the halls to go get dinner from the café in Essex. I cooked in my suite but always left the door open so people would say hi or come in for a couple minutes. In the evening people walk to snack bar or to hang out, and I could usually hear people hanging out down the hall. On some weekends this could get a pretty loud if people were partying in a suite nearby. But over the year, even being a light sleeper and going to sleep early, I was probably only woken up 2 or 3 times (and then earplugs do a pretty good job).

Also note that there are quiet hours in place so you can speak to a staff member or call the front desk if people are being loud. Or just walk out and tell them to be quiet and they usually listen. Rez staff usually keeps everyone pretty under control anyway. During exam period quiet hours are 24/7.

Definitely consider how you react to immaturity before living in rez. Occasionally frosh do stupid things when drunk and say offensive things because they think it’s cool. My reaction is generally to make sure the drunk kids (and those around them) are safe and laugh at the ridiculous things they do. And explain to the offensive people why what they’ve said/done is offensive (see this video: vimeo.com/21210913 I think – it’s blocked on the computer I’m on). Once they understand, I rarely hear it again. But if you would just be annoyed by these things, then rez may not be the ideal place for you.

ANNND there are tons of other opportunities to get involved on campus and in London if you choose not to live in rez. You’ll just have to seek these out. As long as you make the effort to be involved somehow, you will have a great experience.

@freebird, thanks again for all the info, it's really helpful!

I actually also contacted the housing office with this particular query and was told that they do take age into consideration when assigning suitemates, so that's reassuring. They also said there will be "a mix" of first years and upper-year students at London Hall this year but didn't specify how many of each.

All things considered, I think I am very likely to accept my place. The convenience of it (having it all sorted upon arriving in London) and also the opportunity to meet people easily is really appealing. I'm not expecting it to be silent all the time - in fact I wouldn't mind noise at that weekends at all. It's reassuring that you say you've rarely been woken up though, because I'm also a light sleeper :) anyway thanks again for the advice!!
