1.How many required courses do you have? Or how many electives do you have?

17 required math courses
19 required business courses
7 other math courses
5 other business courses
4 free choice electives - most people use these to finish a math major, economics minor, CA required courses etc.

tinaaak wrote:

2. I heard a lot of people eventually drop either the math or bba in the upper years. Is this true? And if it is, why?

Yes, lots of people drop one side or the other. Normally it happens because people realize that they don't want to study one half.

tinaaak wrote:

3. Is the math as part of the DD different from the regular math @UW?

It's 99.9% the same. DDs get some math major requirements waived because we have to take similar courses at Laurier. Also, you are somewhat restricted for your major. For example, you cannot do the Mathematical Optimization - Business Specialization major.

tinaaak wrote:

4. Which one is more focused: math or business?

Explain what you mean by focused and then I'll try and give you an answer.

tinaaak wrote:

5. I'm mostly likely going to try to to stats or actuarial sci. What would the benefits of a DD for me?

You have a business degree to complement your math degree. Depending on what you want to do for a career, you can find complementary pairs of business specializations and math majors.

tinaaak wrote:
6. I never took any business courses in high school. The closest I've gotten is economics. Would this make the business part difficult if I do the DD?

No. I know a lot of people this year who had never taken a business course before and they did just fine. That being said, some of them realized that they didn't really like business .

I'm not sure if this question's been already answered, but what's the tuition like for the double degree program? Is the tuition different depending on which university you'll be based out of? I'm going to be based out of Waterloo for the BMath/BBA double degree. And it increases during the upper years right?

Actually, it decreases in your upper years slightly. I posted the exact numbers in one of the AFM threads, but it's between 3,500 and 4,500 per term. So 7000 - 9000 per year. The earlier terms are more expensive. Source:http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infofin/students/UG%20Schedule%20of%20Fees%20Current.pdf

Those are the UW based fees. They are similar (but not exactly the same) for the WLU side I think though.

Fees are exactly the same for tuition. Each school has a few extra fees however that make it slightly different. A difference of $100 a term at most.

If I was to go to WLU for DD, could I still transfer to Ivey after second year?

This is a bit more difficult than from other schools. In your second year, you have school in the fall term, coop in the winter term and school in the spring term (summer).

When you apply to Ivey, they want to see all your 2nd year marks, but you won't have your 2nd term marks for second year since you will be on co-op. This will hurt your chances.

However, it's definitely possible.

Would this process be similar to Computer Science Co-op at Waterloo?

Yes and No - it depends. For CS, you don't have a set co-op schedule. You could make your second year School-School-Work just like first year and be fine.

As per a previous e-mail from Peter Wood BBA/BCS students have to do one non-summer term. However they can certainly request changes.

I've been really busy with ECs this past week. If anyone had any dying questions for me specifically, send me a PM, because it seemed like others answered the questions better then I ever could.

Thanks thanks. Sorry, another question. What's a typical schedule for a math/BBa DD student in first-year?

Last year our first term schedule was:

Calculus (8:30-9:20) Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Algebra (11:30-12:20) Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Computer Science (11:30-12:50) Tuesday, Thursday
Business (2:30-3:50) Monday, Wednesday
Economics (2:30 - 3:50) Tuesday, Thursday

You'll also have a 90 minute business lab (our were Tuesday nights either at 7, or 8:30) and a 90 minute CS tutorial sometime during the week.

That schedule isn't set in stone. 2nd semester people had more variation. For example, some people had business from 4-7 on Tuesdays.

I got some questions about co-op. Are you allowed to take jobs outside of business/math/cs? Are there many jobs outside the Waterloo/Toronto areas?

You can get a job in any field, but in a lot of these fields you might not be qualified for the positions. For example, a lot of bio/chem jobs require certain lab experience that you won't get in DD.

The majority of jobs are in Toronto, with a number being in Waterloo. There are other jobs out there though. I am currently in Ottawa, and I know a few others who are here as well. But most positions will be in the GTA or KW.

How difficult would it be to find one out-of-province?

Almost impossible for your first work term, unless you find your own. There are some opportunities with the oil companies in Alberta, and tech companies in California, but they are almost always looking at upper year students.

For the business and computer science double degree at Laurier only, what kind of co-op jobs are available? I would assume more business jobs as opposed to tech as Laurier is better on that side but apparently I will belong to the Science department if I accept this offer, so I'm not sure.

While going through the Waterloo calendar, I noticed that almost all courses had a 0.50 at the end. What does that mean? For AFM-PA, you need 5 courses total in a year (http://www.afm.uwaterloo.ca/documents/Copy%20of%20sequence%20of%20courses%20fall%2012.pdf), so does one course with a 0.50 count as one total course or as half a course?
Fall 2012:

Rotman Commerce - Accepted!
Waterloo AFM-PA - Accepted!
McMaster Business - Accepted!
Laurier Economics (Accounting major) - Accepted!

The .5 means that it is a half-credit. You need 5 credits for the full year. So you take 10 .5 courses a year. I.e. 5 per term.

Hi, I'm currently in grade 11 and I'm scared about my ECS and I have a lot of questions :S

I'm really interested in CS but I like business too, which is why I think this dd program is perfect for me. However, I heard it is competitive and I'm not sure whether I can make it.

1. What is considered "good ECs"?
I have 94-95% average this year, and I'm hoping to keep it the same or higher next year. However, I don't have a lot of leadership positions in school. The only executive positions I have are for a social club and for yearbook. I have been a member of DECA since grade 9 but I'm not an executive. Aside from that I have only around 100 volunteer hours from here and there. My math contests are ok, top 25% but never really "good". I did Eculids this year and got a 51 :/ But for the CS contest I did pretty good.

Oh also, I don't really remember my marks from the math contests in grade 9 or 10, do they ask specifically what you got or can I just write top 25%?

2. I am planning on taking physics in summer school to lighten my work load next year so I can have a spare. If I use summer school marks for my top 6, would it be bad?

3. What are some grade 12 courses that are good for preparing me for the program? I'm taking all 3 maths, econ, comp sci and accounting.

Thank you!

1. You'll be fine with a 90+ average. If you apply to the Laurier side then you'll get accepted without them even looking at our ECs. UW will look at your AIF (which is just ECs) and combine it with your marks. 'Good' ECs are really subjective. I would say that I had very good ECs, but someone else might look at the same activities and think something completely different.

2. Taking physics in summer school may hurt your application on the UW side (source: http://findoutmore.uwate...admissions/repeated.php )
If you are interested in physics take it, but otherwise why bother even taking the course. Enjoy your summer instead.

3. Economics will help, but the course isn't that difficult anyways. Accounting might help you a bit in business and then in 2nd year accounting but it isn't critical to take it. Don't worry about preparing for the program, just relax, work hard in grade 12 and enjoy your last year of high school.

Most of the jobs are business focused, however there are some developer jobs with banks, Desire2Learn, RIM, Adobe, amongst others.

Your department doesn't impact what jobs you can apply for really.

Is it possible to take stat 230 first year as a double degree student, or do you have to wait until second year to overload a semester?

You can take it in your 1B term if you get an over 80 average first term. A number of people did that last term, but it does add a lot more work, so it may not be worth it for everyone.
