Questions to Ask College/University Reps

Whether reps are visiting your school or you're planning a campus tour, here are some questions you might want to ask about the school you're considering:

 

 

Admission Requirements:

  1. What is the minimum average required for admission to the program I am interested in?
  2. How will my average be calculated?
  3. Are there any additional or special requirements for admission to the program I am interested in?
  4. Is my program competitive? How many many students apply?  How many students are accepted?
  5. How can I increase my chances of being accepted?
  6. Can I apply to more than one program at your school?
  7. When do I choose my courses? What if I change my mind?
  8. Once accepted, can I change my major? When?
  9. If I am not accepted to the progam I want, do I have other options with your school?

Finances:

  1. What are the costs involved in attending your school for one year?
  2. Is financial aid available from your school? 
  3. Is it only based on my grades?
  4. Do I need to apply or are there automatic scholarships or bursaries?
  5. Is it easy to get a part-time job on campus or in the community? 

Housing:

  1. What percent of freshmen live on campus?
  2. What are the options for housing on campus?  Off-campus?
  3. Is residence guaranteed?
  4. How do I apply for residence?
  5. Can I choose my residence? room? roommate?
  6. What types of rooms are available?
  7. Are meal plans optional or mandatory in residence?
  8. What types of meal plans are available?
  9. Do meal plans accommodate food allergies, vegetarian/vegan diets, health or faith-based restrictions, and other dietary requirements?

 

Student Services:

  1. What academic and career services are available to students?
  2. What resources are there for students who seek tutoring? Is there a writing center?
  3. What are the available medical facilities? Are they open 24 hours a day?
  4. Are there campus support services specifically for freshmen?
  5. Are there any other student services available?

Classroom and Professors:

  1. What is the average class size for the progam I am interested in?
  2. Are Freshman class sizes larger than upper-year class sizes?
  3. Do freshman have access to top faculty?
  4. Are professors approachable?

Campus Safety:

  1. Is the campus secure?
  2. Is there a student escort system or shuttle?
  3. Can students walk alone at night?

Community:

  1. What is the local town/city like?  Urban? Suburban? Rural?
  2. What is it like to live in your region of the country?
  3. Does public transportation provide easy travel between the campus and the community? Will I need a car to get around?
  4. How far away from my home is your campus? How much time will it take to get there from my home (by car, bus, train, air, or public transportation)?
