Exam Crunch Time
There is a day, usually sometime at the beginning of April, that all University students look forward to – the day they receive their final exam schedule. Why do they care so much? Well, partially because the day of their last exam marks the beginning of a 4 month summer. (This is especially exciting for those students finishing first year who, until now, have believed summer to be only 2 months. Aren’t they in for a treat! )
Probably the main reason why students anxiously await the posting of their final exam schedule is so they can find out how much (or little) time the university has given them between exams and how long the agonizing process of exam writing will be.
Exam 1 – April 14th at 2:00pm (worth 35%)
Exam 2 – April 18th at 7:00pm (worth 35%)
Exam 3 – April 19th at 9:00am (worth 50%)
Exam 4 – April 19th at 7:00pm (worth 35%)
Exam 5 – April 28th at 7:00pm (worth 40%)
Look familiar? This is sort of what my exam schedule looked like in my 1st year of university. Worst. Not only was I scheduled to write 3 exams in a 24 hour period, but I was one of the last people in my residence still writing exams at the end of April. Double worst. Studying is a mentally exhausting process and being in study-mode when your friends are already in summer-mode doesn’t make it any easier. Furthermore, having to switch my mind from biochemistry to children’s lit within the time frame of a few hours was just not fair.
There is a lot riding on final exam marks and although I wish universities gave students adequate time to prepare for them, they often do not. So, what did I do? Well, I bit the bullet and studied as hard as I possibly could for a solid 3 week period. I’m not going to say it was fun, but receiving stellar grades and being treated to 4 months without school was reward enough.
Good luck studying to all.
