How Do I Apply My Geography Degree?

By Clarke Thomson

In the case of graduates in the discipline of Geography, it may depend on the area they chose to specialize in during their last two years.

If they chose the general area of Human Geography, many have had successful careers in Urban Planning, Market location positions, and Urban or Environmental Policy positions at any level of government.

If they chose to specialize in Physical Geography, they could apply for positions in Environmental Assessment for either governmental or private consulting agencies, or for consulting firms interested in land assessment or soil analysis.  Some have worked for Environment Canada in the general areas of water resources and climate analysis.

The most important thing any graduate should realize is that they have been trained to think, analyze and present their opinions in either a written or spoken format.  If they do there is no reason they can’t apply for positions in just about any company, governmental or private.    I have had students employed by Bell, several different banks, or they have gone into accounting, library work, worked for transportation companies, etc.  In these cases the students realized they would have to sell themselves to the interviewer and took the time and made the effort to find out something significant about the agency before they went into the interview.  I think that in most cases it really depends on how well the graduates sell themselves in any interview regardless of the discipline they graduate in.
