Money-Saving Tips – The Best

By Studentawards

Compiled from student responses to the Money Saving Tips contest (brought to you by

  • To save money, I put the money in an envelope and pin it to old clothes I never use that are in my closet. This way I forget about the money for awhile because it's out of sight.
  • Air dry your clothes. You save the environment and your electricity bill.
  • Keep your lights off often, light some candles. It's romantic.
  • Recycle all my boxes, and bottles (especially these, because you get cash back).
  • A few things I do to save money at home: 1) put the TV on a timer so it doesn't stay on all night if I fall asleep. Saves energy. 2) Use a steam mop to clean floors and vinegar and baking soda as cleaning products. Eliminates the use of harmful chemicals. 3) Use a big bowl to wash dishes in. Wastes less water. With some of those tips we can all be a little more eco-friendly and energy efficient.
  • Buy your textbooks off of friends or classmates instead of the bookstore. You can also use textbook selling sites or used bookstores to find your textbooks for a lot cheaper. Or try Amazon.ca! Don't forget to resell them when you're done as well!
  • The best way I have come up to save money is by simply putting my toonies and loonies in my piggy bank and over a short period of time I had close to $300. I was very suprised because it’s such a simple thing to do. At one point I wanted to count it so badly I had to use duct tape and secure the lid so opening it wasn't an easy task. This is my way of saving money because after a while you'll have enough that you can pay for a treat or for a month of rent which would be a real bonus while going to school. This way you're saving money without always having to worry about how much you have. All you have to do is throw your loonie/toonies into your piggy bank each day and before you know it you have lots of money.
  • I cancelled my gym membership in the summer months and exercise outside. This can save you $65 a month!
  • Apply to any and all funds, scholarships and bursaries available to you! I get a couple of thousand dollars every year, no joke.
  • I use coupons every time I shop or go out with my boyfriend. With the right coupons (that I usually find online) I can usually save a pretty decent amount of money.

Information, advice and tips provided as part of the Money Saving Tips Contest are intended for entertainment only and should be taken with one or two somewhat large grains of salt.
