Why Employers Hire English Grads (2)

By Nick Mount

Employers don't hire skills, they hire people. In employment terms, all the degree does is get your resume considered, hopefully an interview. After that, it's you that matters: things like how well you understand others and they understand you. Which, coincidentally, is pretty much what we hope you'll learn to do in an English program: to understand the feelings and thoughts of others (we call them "characters" or "authors"), and to help others understand what you think and feel about them.

Nick Mount, English Department, University of Toronto, and 3M National Teaching Fellow.
