Hi,

I'm getting married in August and I was wondering how that will affect my OSAP for next year? Do I get more or less money because my wife currently has a job and a car (not a high paying job and not a very expensive car).

I'm used to getting $11,000 from the government. Will it be less now? I won't be working during the year and we'll be living together in a low-income rent apartment. She won't be able to support me at all and with rent on top of school I need the money.

Someone told me I could get up to $25,000 from the government. Is that true?

Someone please let me know how this works when I get married.

Thanks,
Paul

Use the OSAP aid calculator.

When you're under 21, they use your parent's income as a factor in determining how much you'll get. After that, if you get married, your spouse's income is also considered in the aid calculations.

Yes, it will probably be less than $11,000.

No, you won't get $25,000. The maximum from OSAP is $13,800, and that won't be you if you're married to someone who has an average job and a car.

Not including grants. I'm getting considerably more then that because I have dependents to support.

Well then maybe you should make responsible choices. Why are we subsidizing your promiscuity?

You need to look up the word "promiscuity". I'm married, and the children belong to my spouse and me. Plus you're not subsidizing anything. I've been on the job force for 20 years and paid taxes same as anyone. Due to an unfortunate accident, I've lost the ability to work at my current job, so I have to return to school. I've reported your comment as abusive.

Thank you! I applaud your answer and your actions.

I'm sorry, ARMY101, but even though you do know quite a bit about OSAP (from what I've seen), it may be time to brush up on your interpersonal skills. That comment lacked tact and you blatantly insulted someone who's situation you have no clue about! And when you think about, what other stupid stuff does our precious tax money pay for, exactly? To let petty criminals sit in a prison? So, you attack someone who, when they get another job with their degree/diploma, will pay back the grants (in theory) by paying more tax dollars into the system... SO, what exactly would be the problem??? And in what world does the statement of 'I have dependents' mean 'I am a person who is promiscuous and had kids by accident'???? Check a dictionary and thesaurus when trying to express your thoughts instead of launching out your verbal/written diarrhea.

Have a lovely evening.
