i'm applying for osap. i have 8, 000 in RESP's.

the application ask 'resp you intend to use for your study period of sept 2012'
the fall 2012-2013 year cost roughly around 3,500. my parents want to give me the full 8,000 when i start school. so do i claim the full 8,000 or just what i need for the year.

confused as to how to answer this question. thanks in advance!

you don't have to take the full amount just the $3500.

You claim what you take out of your RESP for the year.
So if you take out the $3500, and leave the rest, you only claim the $3500.
If you parents have you take out the $8000 even if you do not use all of it this year, you have to claim the $8000.
