I am in grade 11 (going into grade 12 this September), and currently taking grade 12 biology in summer school. My initial goal was to get at least a 90% entering the exam, however, I checked my updated marks last week and it was an 86. Unfortunately, due to my stupidity and carelessness, I failed my bio test with a 46. It was out of 24, and it was about DNA replication. My teacher and the school I attend, uses 'Web-marks" and the KTCA (Knowledge & Thinking = 30%, Communication and Application = 20%) I'm afraid that my current test mark will drop my overall average by 2-4%! D; I'm aware we had other activities too, such as quizzes, presentations and labs. So far I've had two lines of 70s (one was a 75% and the other a 70%) and now a 46%. I have a presentation to do tomorrow and one last test on Monday, which will be about Homeostasis-- urinary system, endocrine, immune and hormones. I really don't know how I'm going to get a final average of 85% for universities... D; I'm planning to apply for Ryerson's Nursing, Ryerson's Chemical Engineer, and University of Toronto for Chemical Engineer and Chemistry. I also finished grade 12 English during my grade 11 year with an 84 and I'm scared to death about what's going to happen in the end... Any advice, tips? HELP! So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor and catch the trade winds in your sails.

My advice would be to study hard! Or retake the course if this fails. I don't think Ryerson minds redone courses (but double check to make sure). UFT averages the two marks, and since you should (hopefully) end up with an 80 anyways, if you redo it and get... say a 90, your bio average will be an 85. I don't know what you need to get into your program, but it will bring your average up nonetheless. Don't stress, study hard for exams, and if it comes down to it, redo the course! You should already have a good understanding of it from doing it the first time anyways. :)

What's with the keener obsession of taking grade 12 courses in grade 11? Just take it in grade 12 instead of trying to "fast track" if it's too overwhelming and stressful.

UFT averages the two attempts. You could call and ask them if you don't believe me. And Gorges26, I think milliex51 is going into grade 12 in September. She's just summer schooling. I actually believe fast tracking is a really smart thing to do. That's just my personal opinion though.

Can you audit or drop the course later on? If you can, I will suggest you to work hard and try your best so if you get 90% or higher you can just keep your mark but if your mark is lower then just drop or audit the course. I was like you but I took bio 12 in the summer when I was going into grade 11. I got 65% first attempt in summer school and then I got 82% for the second attempt in regular day school. I must say bio is hard with all the memorization lol. Why can't it be like physics where only concepts and some calculus are needed... Anyways, good luck!

The calculation part is not needed at the high school level but using understanding calculus then the math will be able to explain some physics concepts. Also, calling other people "idiot" is just rude and what does that say about your maturity and whether you are an idiot yourself or not?

When I was in high school, I knew a few people who did the whole summer school thing just for the sake of getting courses out of the way ASAP. They initially planned on fast tracking, but by the time they reached grade 12 they ended up graduating when everyone else did anyway. Plus their marks in the courses that they "jumped ahead" and took weren't spectacular. Some people can handle it, but I think too many people who do this just end up getting burned out. Summer for high schoolers is short enough as it is - I'm a firm believer in enjoying it to recharge/work/do other things, especially when the fast track routine needlessly ends up costing the student.

Guys, sorry for the late reply but I greatly appreciate all the feedback! In the end, my final average for bio 12 is an 88. I did not expect to ever get somewhere this far but I guess, working hard and aiming big pays off. So again, thank you! So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor and catch the trade winds in your sails.

Good job, it seems like you are on the right track with your current marks. That being said, don't forgot that Engineering programs don't require biology, so if you get higher marks in other elective courses, for your engineering applications your biology mark is no longer relevant. 88 is a very respectable mark for a science course, but I'm sure there are many courses that could've netted you a much higher grade for similar effort. Just putting that out there if you want to maximize your average. University of Waterloo: Systems Design Engineering Class of 2017
