I have absolutely no idea what to expect of the university social scene, as I will be going to university completely alone. When it come to the U of A, do the students often partake in the frat/theme parties and such? Much of what I know about college life comes from cinema, how much of that can I expect (Lingerie parties and the like)? I apologise for my naivety.

Hahahaha. University is not like the movies. The Dekes (DKE) is a frat that has some sweet parties though (so I hear, I've never attended) and some of my friends were in that frat. They got into a LOT of trouble because of hazing and had their university affiliation revoked. I'm pretty sure they're still partying hard regardless.

I was born and raised in Edmonton and did my undergrad at U of A. I obviously think it's a great social scene, but it will depend on who your friends are. If you're living in Lister you should be fine and you will get a similar social experience as you see in the movies.

There's really only one main street that university students go to for bars. Whyte Ave. There's also Jasper Ave but it's a bit farther away from the university. I kind of like it like that because when you go out you always see a ton of people you know

What are some of the big events at UofA? Like campus-wide events? And also, can you go into a little more detail what Lister is like? I'd like to know what it's really like there now (as opposed to how it was 20 years ago. Both my parents went there).

Campus-wide? Antifreeze, can't remember what else. The SU puts them on. Lister has more events that I don't know about because I lived at home during undergrad, so I can only go by what I heard from my many friends and boyfriend who lived there.

Hi I'm going into my third year at the U of A and i got to say for campus wide events there is Orientation/week of welcome where we have beer gardens on campus and bring in live bands on some nights also, varsity games our 4 most popular teams would be Bears hockey and football and basketball and pandas volleyball. The games are licensed so they are a great place to go out for cheap beers befor you hit up Whyte Ave on the weekends. As for lister there are many "Ship nights" where lister gets packages and buses to take you down to a bar on whyte or jasper ave (lots of fun expect glow parties) and there are numerous other things that happen throughout the year(aka halloween parties and such) my suggestion get to know someone in the Phys ed faculty because we always know where the best parties are happening at. have fun at Uni kids.

Also i suggest going to at least Day 1 of orientation just meet a couple of people it'll help you out A LOT if you make a few good friends on that first day cause most likely the people in your group will be taking the same courses as you are at the same time (study partners and getting notes from them when you miss class)
