Re: Is our students learning? by Margaret Wente (referencing the U.S. book “Academically Adrift”), published in the Globe and Mail on June 16, 2011:

I find the statements in the [article] upsetting!  No doubt some of those assertions are true for a limited number of faculty and students and they are influenced by the professors and university administrations who value research to the exclusion of teaching.  If faculty or the university administration do not make an attempt to reach out and engage students all of these things can happen.   But there are many faculty who do care about teaching and engaging students and passing on the ideas that surface from research.   My advice to parents is to read Macleans magazine and look for those universities that reward and are known for good teaching faculty.
