Follow your Natural Interest to Success

By Andy Liu

Consider the entry draft in a professional sport. The weak teams draft players to fill gaps in their rosters. The strong teams draft the best athletes regardless of the positions they play. If you are an excellent athlete, the weak teams may pass you by because you may play the wrong position as far as they are concerned, but the strong teams will definitely take you. Would you rather be with weak teams or with strong teams?

Whatever career you may follow, you are first of all a person. A university education trains you how to be a person, not how to be a doctor, a lawyer or whatever. If you are good, you have nothing to worry about, regardless of which discipline you may be in. The companies that pass you by are not the employer of your future. Be good enough so you can choose instead of being chosen. Follow your natural interest, enjoy and flourish.

Andy Liu, Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Alberta, and 3M National Teaching Fellow.
