Why Employers Hire Engineering Grads

Engineers are inherently problem solvers; their work is very practical. As such, engineers are in high demand.

By examining the graduate attributes for engineers, mandated by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), one can get a sense of the wide range of abilities of an engineer, including technical and so called "soft skills" (CEAB uses the following graduate attribute headings: a knowledge base for engineering, problem analysis, investigation, design, use of engineering tools, individual and team work, communication skills, professionalism, impact of engineering on society and the environment, ethics and equity, economics and project management, and life-long learning).

As a result, we see engineers engaged in roles that are not traditionally associated with engineering, including international development, health care, and entrepreneurship.

It is important to note the emphasis on "transferable skills" in engineering education. Things are changing rapidly. Technology is constantly evolving. Globalization has had a large impact. The ability to adapt and learn throughout your career is important for long term success in tomorrow's jobs!
