I am a high school student preparing for University. Finance is a field that I have some interest in (alongside accounting). I understand that Queens is a great school for Finance while Schulich isn't well known for it. How much of a disadvantage is it if I take finance at schulich as opposed to Queens or Ivey.
Applying to:

Queen's Commerce {Accepted}
Schulich BBA {Accepted}
Laurier BBA {Accepted}
Rotman Commerce {Rejected- Never Did PS} --> UTM Commerce {Accepted}
DeGroote Business {Accepted}

Class of 2016

For summer 2011 placement, schulich's best finance was 1 placement at UBS Toronto. Queen's placed 5 into Goldman Sachs New York for investment banking... that's the difference lol.

Finance is very broad. Corporate fiance? Both Schools are great. IB or Trading? Go to Queen's.
PM if you have any questions with regards to school, university, jobs, etc. I am glad to help out and share what I know.

Where are you getting this info from? Schulich's latest report was their permanent employment from 2010 (waiting on 2011). As far as I'm concerned, they don't release summer placement reports.And Queen's placed 5 to GS in NY, for INTERNSHIP? Really? I sort of doubt that. That's more of a permanent placement type of thing.
Furthermore, what is "Canada's Premier Business School" ?

___

Anyway, both schools are great. Here's what I've been noticing: Schulich is harder for Finance, thus the small percentage that make it in, usually have the highest starting salaries (more than Ivey & Queen's). Queen's/Ivey seem to open more spots for Finance, and have lower starting salaries. This is over the past few years.

I know who at what school got what jobs in finance because I have friends there and we share information.. Schulich salary is messed because they include insane ibanking bonuses while Queen's and Ivey only include the base salary.

From Queen's:

Danny Hertz - GS NY Summer 2011
Seth Rosenberg - GS NY Summer 2011
Christian Sisak - GS NY Summer 2011
Katie Hayes - GS NY Summer 2011
Nikhil Wadhwa - GS NY Summer 2011

There you go.. 5 GS NY Summer interns, all in investment banking division. They all received return offers for full-time.
Also, number of Queen's students already secured an internship at GS NY for summer 2012.

Schulich is garbage when it comes to finance recruiting. I think Laurier places more into investment banking that Schulich does....

Schulich students get more than 1 summer placement in IB. The UBS placement was for Maxwell Serebryanny (after 2nd year). I also know Pulkit Gera and Rebecca Wall-Clarke (both after 2nd year) had summer internships in IB. I am sure a lot more people had IB internships, but I do not personally know them because I mostly network with accounting and consulting students.

Your sources are "knowing people"? Really?
So now you're saying they received offers for FULL-TIME? Meaning, no internship, and like I said, it is believable that it's permanent employment. Maybe those kids are 4th years.

Schulich is stricter on Finance. The SCHOOL seems to be. A small percentage make it. Large rewards. You think that's "garbage"? And who told you Laurier places more? Honestly, only Math/BBA kids would get IB placements form Laurier. I had friends last year (I was in a gr.12 class) who got accepted to Laurier - 84 averages, the guy smoked weed, etc. I thought it was a joke. The one thing however that I do admire is their UFE honour roll.

EDIT: Schulich does NOT include bonuses, and Ivey clearly states they DO. Ivey: "includes: Base salary, signing bonus, and other guaranteed compensation."

Omg.

So you go to Queen's eh?

I said best finance position was UBS Toronto. Maxwell is currently in 4th year. His UBS job came after his 3rd year.
Gera worked at a boutique, same as rebecca i assume. There are 1st years from Queen's who worked at better firms than them lmao. Actually, there are students at Queen's who worked in PRIVATE EQUITY (cppib and other huge funds) after 2nd year.

Dude, just realize that Schulich is below Laurier and you can sleep in peace.

you're stupid. you do a summer internship, and if you do well, you receive a full time offer at the end of said internship. I am getting depressed by your sad attempts at trying to prop up schulich. I am guessing your ECs are so bad that you can't get into Queen's or Ivey.

I don't think you understand how recruiting works. The school doesn't give you anything. Recruiters will come to your campus, interview you, and take you if they like you (or you apply to their website, interview at their office, etc, etc). The fact that Schulich lacks in finance recruiting is maybe... students are incompetent vs. queens or ivey?

Queen's is a great school for finance. It has many initiatives including

QUIC: A $500,000+ portfolio students actively invest with
QCTC: Queen's Commerce Trading Competition, a stock trading simulation with real cash prizes
DayOnBay.ca: Canada's largest student run blog on finance.

I'd advise you check out the above link for more information about finance careers. It's important to check out websites like these on a regular basis to be informed about current events in order to secure placements at Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, firms that actively recruit at Queen's.

Schulich is more likely….soo I'm guessing I'm not screwed if i go to Schulich?

Go to Ivey if you are really into Finance, take like Math or something the first two years and then go into it. Ivey is probably the best school for Finance. They place in TO, NY, and as far as SF & LA (none of the other Candian schools do that).

Queen's is great too, if you want really want to get into investment banking here, you will probably get into any one of the Toronto banks/boutiques at least considering that you demonstrate a lot knowledge and interest in the field. Yes, it's true 5 students got into GS NY. That was for the class of 2012. There are two more so far that got it for the class of 2013 and the rest are just keeping to themselves for now probably. We'll see how this year goes.

Don't put down Schulich that much, but I can't disagree that they don't place as well. Those guys in the Schulich investment club get recruitment into IB in some of the big 5 Canadian banks and boutiques. I think it was two years ago, a guy called Florind was recruited by GS as well, not sure if it was Toronto or NY office. He was class of '09.

You will get better opportunities at Queen's and Ivey though.
