My mark has drastically dropped in this course and Im struggling so much! My teacher can't teach properly and that is my biggest problem! I've got Data this semester too so that's perfectly fine! I'm doing pretty well in that class, but Ad. Functions... YIKKEESSS!! Im scared that with the mark I have, I wont get accepted to university and I really want to go to UofT into their Accounting program! Any advice on what I could do to help myself out? And might I say, I am alreayd getting extra help after school but since it's the same teacher, it doesn't really help! I asked friends too, but most of them are struggling too so the marks are pretty low!! I really need some advice because we just got our midterms today and I still have half the semester left plus the final exam which is like 30% of our overall mark. What do you guys think I should do?? I'm really stressed out and frustrated and I really need some help!

Now that we're further into the course, I've come to realize that this class is actually fairly challenging, I'm struggling to maintain a 90 and I have the second highest mark in the class with the highest being a 92. Our class average is a 73.

I find this course harder than 4U physics.

I'm not doing bad in this course, but I'm not doing great either. I'm getting an 81.

I wish my teacher gave me more time. The quiz we had was with no calculator on trig problems. The only reason she has a no calculator part is because she wants us to memorize the special triangles, which is understandable, but that's only for one question. Using a calculator for mapping notation, converting 4.3 radians into degrees would save me a lot of time if I could use the calculator to multiply the x-coordinates by 1/3 and then add pi/6. I lose a lot of time.

The multiple choice questions will take me like 3 minutes each without a calculator, where they would take me like a minute each if I had one. Then I only have 8 minutes left to do a graphing question and a question where I have to simplify an expression using special triangles which is the only part of the quiz where using no calculator makes sense.

Sigh.

I tell everyone who asks me in the beginning of the year about the course...i give them the same answer first 4 chapters are marks boosters...then it starts getting harder...I fast tracked advanced functions and data management in gr 11...I ended up with a 81 and 87 respectively...trig plummeted my mark 7 percent from 85. I can say for sure I had one of the highest marks in the whole year. Sure there are people with 90s but our teacher told us out of all the kids who took advanced functions 16 % got 80 or above. Our teachers are great...they just tend to stick to hard tests. To put it into perspective at our school the calc marks were 42 % above 80. <---different teachers.

Its not that hard of a course. I found trig graphs much harder than trig identities/inequalities personally. My final mark was a 92 (highest in the class), while no one else got 90+, and the median was 65. I fasttracked as well, and I'm finding almost 10 people getting 96+ right now... kind of ridiculous.

What parts are you having trouble with?

EVERYTHINGGG!! It's just, I do the material in class but when it comes to do it on my own, I tend to struggle because I just can't figure it out. My teacher isn't much help either, because he cannot explain the content properly and it is making me and many others suffer! I am currently on the Trig identities unit! As much as I concentrate in class, it's still not helping! I've tried to do so much, I just don't know what to do about it now! I need suggestions!

first step: stop the blaming teacher, you're given a textbook for a reason. my teacher doesn't speak english (hardcore accent, can't understand a single word, i stopped going to class) and i'm doing fine with the course.

second step: stop using '!' every sentence.. you seem like the type that would panic during a quiz/test, that's not good.

third step: if you tell us what specific part of trig you're having trouble with we (or at least i) can help. some of the identities are tough i must admit.. some require binomial theorem, some require sum of cubes, difference of cubes, completing the square, etc.. requires some creativity. but most of them can be solved just by simplifying.

fourth step: get one of those recent calculators that gives you exact ratios.. saves you time on tests and you can check your answers easily. unless you're already proficient with the basic trig ratios then i guess there's no need

trig is the easiest unit of advanced functions once you understand it. don't think it's hard, think it's easy and it'll become easy :)

Well, I blame the teacher because half the student body that is taking Advance Functions blames the teacher. None of us ever had a problem with fuctions last year when these specific teachers weren't teaching. Asking for help from them doesn't do anything, because the only answer we get is, "You should know this...". How can I learn when he is not prepared to answer questions when I ask or actually solve something for me? And we are not given a textbook to work with... I have to admit, it would be a lot easier if we did have textbooks but we don't. I am finally done the trig unit and it didn't go so bad, but I could have done better. Now we are onto exponential and logarithmic functions. Log is not that difficult to understand, but I am having trouble with a few things. We were doing basic equations on how to solve an equation by converting to exponential form or LOG form. We have just started the unit, so I do not have much questions asa of yet, but I will soon.

About using the "!" in almost every sentence... well it's just how I write. I actually don't panic on tests. I get frustrated at times, but I don't start panicking.

I do have a calculator which gives a ratio instead of a decimal. It actually has saved alot of time and it is much easier to do trig ratios and determine where the termical arm is on the CAST graph. But that's over and done with.

My thing is, no matter how hard I try, I just don't get it. My only option right now is, if I get lower than like a 60% by my final, I will go to night school next semester to upgrade my mark. Not many students in my course are getting high 90's in this course. I think the course median for our midterm was around a 64% or so.

Thank You for the help... I really appreciate it!

Now that we're over with the trig stuff and started logarithms, this course isn't so bad anymore, I have a 92 (second highest in the class) which I'm fairly positive should go because logarithms so far are really easy. bounce

I. Can. Not. Do. Trigonometry.

As much as I'd love to elaborate, I can't, because I wouldn't even know where to begin. I have a 71, course median is a 66. Missed a total of five days of the unit for DECA and hockey (both in and out of school). Getting increasingly frustrated with all the homework catch-up I'm trying to do on my own, without ever really hearing a lesson.

If your class mates jumped off a bridge, would you? Stop blaming him and start taking into account that there is more you can do. There are various resources which can help such as "surprise surprise", the text book. Even youtube is helpful if you are struggling because teachers actually put their lessons on there.

Its never too late to bring up your mark. Last year, I had a 56% after the first month. However, I finished with an 89%, so don't tell yourself that nightschool/ summerschool is the solution becasue it is not.

Slasher61, ssidat wishes the class has a textbook to work with. This is why questions would never get answered. If you ask me, that's reason enough to blame school staff.

So now that the semester's over, what did you guys think of the course overall?

My mark plummeted during trig but other than that, the course wasn't so bad. Glad that I was able to use algebra as a cushion for my mark and other than one question (forgot the formula for factoring the sum of cubes pale ), the exam was pretty easy.

I personally didn't find any units particularly challenging or easy... My mark range was ridiculously small. All my tests fell between 91-97% with a mean of about ~93%, and a derp on one of my quizzes bringing me to a final of 92.

Just had my math exam today. I made a few careless errors (hate it when you realize after the exam), but it was a fair exam, even though it was challenging.

The teacher had to give us 20 extra minutes because no one finished on time. I'm hoping I can get an 84 on the exam, to keep my 84 I have now.

I'm taking this course at the same time as calculus and vectors next semester. Any advice? I'm a little worried about it...
