I would consult with your roommates to make sure that only one person brings a microwave, instead of everyone arriving with one, while no one brings a toaster for example! It is good to know what everyone has, and what is needed (this is also a good way to save money). I would find out what your residence offers (if you are planning on living in residence) in order to know what you need and what you do not need. For example, my residence did not have a communal television in the shared living room, and so my roommates and I had to work out who was going to bring a television. Some residences require that you bring your own ethernet cord. Some students also get laptop locks for their desks and personal mini fridges (if allowed). I purchased a dry erase calendar to mark down all of my assignments to hang on my wall as well. It might also be a good idea to stock up on laundry change if you have to use a coin laundry mat. I also bought ear plugs! I know it sounds crazy but you will be thankful for them if you have loud, disrespectful roommates and you need to sleep!

... Why would you bring toilet paper. If your university is so poor it can't provide toilet paper in its restrooms, you're in trouble.

There are a number of things that you should take with you when going off to university/college. Some of the most important include:

~ food staples (rice, instant oatmeal, crackers, granola bars, etc...) that you can eat right out of the package or prepare very quickly, because there won't always be time to eat a full meal

~ mementos from home (pictures, keepsakes, etc...) because you probably will feel homesick, and it's nice to have something from home during those times

~ a lanyard for all of your keys & your student card because they are so easy to lose

~ all of your electronics (computer, cell phone, etc...) and the chargers to go with them

~ many, many reusable containers, both for your food, as well as larger ones (like totes) for your clothing, books, electronics, jewelery, school supplies...

~ change, soap, fabric softener, etc... for doing your laundry, as well as something to put your laundry in (a collapsible hamper, a reusable bag...)

~ milk crates (to put under your bed to raise it up for extra storage)

~ small appliances such as a kettle, one-cup coffee maker, etc... depending on what your residence will allow

~ dishes and silverware (if you will be preparing your own meals)

Of course you need clothes. Be sure to bring hangers cause I doubt they will be supplied.
Remember all the food you'll want and any books, games, etc to keep you busy in spare time.
If you are moving somewhere they don't give you supplies like pots and pans be sure to bring all that and your dishes. (Are, in rare cases some places supply that stuff)
All your hygiene stuff, if you have your own bathroom you'll want to bring toilet paper.
All books and supplies you'll need including electronics.
You may want to bring your own sheets, etc, even if they are supplied. Especially pillows and blankets.

Remember to bring something to clean your floors with. For some that might be a small vacuum whereas for others it's a broom/Swiffer thing. Look up what type of floors your room has so that you can be best prepared. Also, your floor is bound to be cold if it's not carpeting so I would suggest slippers, small rugs (like the $4 ones at Wal Mart), and anything else to help cope with cold floors.

BRING:
- shower flipflops
- variety of shoes- Gym, Bar/clubs, trekking around campus, slippers.
- shower robe
- healthy snack food (vending machines get pricey and are freshman-15's best friend!)
- lots of sweatpants (jeans are non-existant in residences!)
- posters
- hangers (if you have a closet) or a closet organizer
- air fresheners
- cheapo vaccuum (I bought one for $30 from Canadian Tire, get one that'll fit in your closet or under your bed, beats having to lug around the huge crappy one that residence services will offer!)
- Purel
- DVDs, TV seasons (perfect for burning time inbetween classes or when all of your friends are in class)

DON'T bring:
- Novels or any other books you've already/have yet to read- YOU WON'T HAVE TIME! Between all of the required readings, homework assignments, and a social life, the last thing you're going to be thinking about doing or even having time to do is re-read your old books, trust me, all they will do is take up space in your already cluttered room!
- Anything extremely valuable to you- You may think your in an environment with mature, intelligent individuals who lack the immaturity to steal, but think again. People will steal your things, especially when you're partying or simply leaving your door unlocked. Goodbye laptop and speakers!
- Don't overload on photo frames and nick-nacks (sp?)- just bring some photos to tape to your walls, focus more on posters and tihngs like that- they'll take up SOOO much packing space, and honestly, people really won't notice that much!

don't forget a shower curtain! Small appliances if you don't have a kitchen (kettle, rice cooker, toaster, toaster oven, a hot plate is they allow it), but you have to be careful and read what the residence sends you because you don't want to buy something and then not be allowed to use it in residence. I remember not being allowed a hot plate and the kitchen being so far away my roommate and I use to cook eggs on our sandwich maker. Most will remember laundry basket and clothes but don't forget your hangers and a drying rack (there's not a lot of places to hang things in residence). You stuck up with a lot more people than normal DO NOT forget medicine. I was sick a lot last year in residence because i have a crappy immune system. But when there is a big bug going around. You want to try and prevent it and if not you definitely want to be able to make it go away. And no one likes going out while they're sick to get medicine.
