Hey, I applied to Arts & Science for Fall 2012. It's definitely my first choice if I get in. I'm really nervous for it though. I think my average will only be 89...
I had a very rough semester on a personal level. That helped a lot with my application though. I'm not so worried about that as I am mainly my marks...
How does everyone else feel/what were the entry marks of people in the program?

I've applied as well. Does anyone know approximately when to expect an offer/rejection? (hoping for the former, obviously)

Did you guys get confirmation emails saying that your supplementary app was received?

I guess there was no email that was supposed to be sent out. I called admissions, and they mentioned something about getting an email, so I freaked out. Then I called the ArtSci department and they told me that my application is being reviewed cheers

Still don't think I'll get in though... =/

I didn't get an email, either. For future peeps checkin' out this thread, you can confirm whether or not they've received your application from the ArtSci website. You just need the confirmation number you got when you sent it in.

And there's no use dwelling on it! You're just going to get anxious. And not in a healthy way. Focus on having fun in your last year of high school!

I would love to get in as well (every time I think about the program, I smile!), but I keep telling myself that if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. cheers
Will that make it any less depressing when/if I don't get in? Who knows. But it sure helps for the time being!

I'm sure that if you're the type of student that's applying to this program, you're the type of student that will find happiness in any sort of program, be it ArtSci or anywhere else. (That was disgustingly cheesy, but it's true!)

Besides, from what I've gathered, the earliest acceptances come out in April (and the latest in early May!), so we have a lot of time to kill. farao Luckily my extracurriculars have been eating up a lot of time lately!

Yeah, I was just worried about my application because I was smart enough to type in my OUAC number wrong. -.- But now everything's sorted out. Hopefully they don't hold that against me, haha.

And you're right, dwelling on it does no good. I've stopped thinking about ArtSci. I didn't think my chances were that high to begin with... I just applied because even if I get rejected, I can say to myself that I tried. :) And maybe me not getting in is just a sign that there's a better program out there for me.

Most people who got into ArtSci last year got their acceptances around the end of May. I'm getting close to the end of my first year in the program now, and it's been fantastic. Good luck to everyone who applied!

Offers for the Arts & Science Program (for Ontario High School applicants) will go out the first week of May. This is due to the fact that we need to review the supplementary applications, as well as ensure that we see grades from both semesters before making admission decisions.
Hope this helps clear up any confusion.

Whoops, I just double-checked the datestamp of my acceptance, and it was the sixth of may, which is not all that late. PJ, you are entirely correct.
I remember thinking that it was ridiculously late compared to other acceptances, and the wait was brutal, but it is honestly because they review the supp apps very carefully. Don't stress guys :)

I am now going to be using this forum to further procrastinate, so I'll be checking it like it's my job.

I want to talk to all of you! ASK ME QUESTIONS!

Have a super day!

Hi jammendoza, Godzilla, and other Artscis :)

I was hoping you guys could answer some of my questions!

- How are you enjoying your first year classes? Could you give a brief opinion/description on the courses you're taking (pros/cons)?
- What are your favourite/least favourite aspects of this program?
- How many hours a week do you spend in class? Doing homework?
- Is the grading generally fair? With hard work, is maintaining a high GPA (3.7+) a reasonable goal?
- Any idea on what you hope to do after undergrad?
- What are the top three skills that Artsci has equipped you with?
- Are you very involved in extracurriculars? Also, how is the social scene at Mac?

OMYGOODNESS HELLO!
I am VERY HAPPY to answer your questions!!

- I absolutely LOVE the first year classes! Shall I go through all the courses individually? Because there's Logic, Writing, Inquiry, Western Civilization, and Calculus.

- Favourite aspects:
1) The people! I love the ArtSci community! It's like have 200 instant awesome friends as soon as you get there! Automatically!
2) The profs are MAGNIFICENT
3) Small class sizes are a huuuggeee benefit! I went to a super-tiny high-school (less than 20 people in my graduating class (it wasn't private, it was just a little baby french school)) so I really appreciate not having 300 people in all my courses!
4) C105! It's the ArtSci common space (I'm here right now...) and it's a really great place to chat with other ArtScis, attempt to do work, and other such shinaniganry.
5) I just love all of it. Seriously. Love. It. I'm so glad I came here.

- Class hours/week: I have 18 this term, plus a 3 hour lab every other week (go Physics!) but last term I overloaded (I'm an oddity in that though, MOST people DO NOT overload their first term of university! (I'm rather foolish)) so I had 22 plus a 2 hour lab every week.
Re Homework. Uhhhmmmmm I'm really not a good person to ask about this, I have terrrrrrible work habits.

- I would say the grading is very fair. Then again, I have never questioned the grading integrity of any teacher or prof ever, to me it just seems unprofessional and rather pointless. That being said, I will bring errors to the attention of the instructor, and people are always really good about that. So long story short: I think it's just.
In regards to the GPA (sidenote, Mac's grading scheme is a 12 point scale, here's a conversion chart: http://studentsuccess.mc...a-conversion-chart.html ), as mentioned, my work habits are no good, as a result my grades has suffered. Change is on the horizon for this kid's work ethic!

- After undergrad: Nooooo idea. I am currently set up to get my Combined Honours in Physics, but I really don't know. It's just that if you declare a Combined, the university allows you to take more intensive courses in that subject. I'm really just poking around though, checking out what I like so that I can find what I'll be really happy doing my whole life (cue, cheesy music). I love learning, pretty much about everything, so I'm keeping my options wide open and just enjoying my time. Enjoying it so much. I'm really not stressed about the future, it'll work out.

- I honestly believe my skills as a hunter of mythical beasts has improved, I am now extremely adept at zero-gravity ballroom dancing, and lastly, I am much more handsome.

- I'm fairly involved in extra-curriculars I'd say. I'm a first-year rep (now all the current ArtScis reading this thread know my identity. Curses. Hello, yes, it is indeed I, Sam Godfrey (God-frey, God-zilla, I'm so witty)) and I write/illustrate for the student magazine (Incite Magazine) every month. I'm also hoping to get more involved next year, on the ArtSci student council, in Incite, and also start writing for the Silhouette (campus newspaper)! There's so much to do! I love Incite especially!
Re social scene: it's what you make it!

Alllll right! I hope these are helpful!
Don't be a stranger (what a weird thing to say...)!
All my best,
-Godzilla

Courses!

I'll try to include other people's opinions too, because I acknowledge that I have, erm, a particular zeal for life? Exuberance? I am borderline Bedlam-crazy happy? (Description of me, given just now by a fellow C105-dweller, a single word: "Crack")
So I'll try to give some cons too.

Logic - I really adore this course, I'm looking into whatever classes follow this in 2nd year. We go through different ways of analyzing/constructing different types of arguments, stuff like that. Dr. Rodde, our prof, is phenomenal. Loved by all. Genius and hilarious. On the other hand, I know there are people who find it rather difficult. Another ArtSci, currently in C105, says "I find it interesting, but challenging. Very challenging" She said with a creepy giggle. She also points out she is currently eating chocolate.

Writing - EVERYONE'S WRITING IS SO MUCH BETTER. I love Dr. Browning so much (other C105-dwellers are mildly squeeing in delight at the mention of his name). He and I have a super-similar sense of humour too, so we're kinda bros (I wish). Unfortunately, he won't be with the program much longer because he is rather aged. Long and the short of it: no matter how good you think your writing is right now (no offence to your writing (I'm sure it's very fine), I swear to you, I'm just speaking what I, and the rest of us, think about our past-writing), you will look back on it and say "Wow. That was embarrassing drivel and this course has made me not only a better writer, but a better citizen". Okay, maybe not the part about being a better citizen, that's Inquiry's job!

Inquiry - Kind of hard to explain. It's really eye-opening though. Looking into the developing world in all sorts of different ways. 2 large research papers (I should really be working on one right now...) over the year. I won't tell you much about this one: you'll see when you get here.

Western Civilization - This course is good because it teaches you to think in a different way, a new way from what you're used to. Lots of greek thinkers up in here, fa'sho. The prof is an absolute darling, though his lecture style doesn't agree with a lot of people (myself included). (Speaking of WestCiv, I should be doing that right now as well. ('Dem work habits))

Calculus - Uhm. Calculus? Although, I should mention: I LOVE DR. VALERIOTE!!! SO MUCH!! He's super awesome!!! And really brilliant!!

So I think that wraps up this course description! But, shoutout to OTHER ARTSCIS: Give your input too! I am but a lowly individual!

Clarifications? Further questions?

All my best,
Godzilla

Do you know anything about the Arts Sci programs at other universities (like McGill) in compared to McMaster's?

Hey, I applied to ArtSci this year at Mac. The difference I found in my research between Mac ArtSci and places like McGill is that at Mac ArtSci is it's own program with a core group of students, specific teachers and a specifically structured program/ course set.
At McGill it seems that ArtSci is basically an option of combining courses from the faculty of arts with courses from the faculty of science. These courses would not be specifically offered to ArtSci students nor would they be part of a tailored ArtSci program. The Mac advantage is having an environment where everyone is seeking an interdisciplinary mind set in your program and forming relationships with other ArtSci students as well as ArtSci profs.

That's my understanding of it anyway. I hope that helps.

bfletcher has it right!

I was strongly considering McGill Arts and Science (as in, I was going to go there but my parents kind of pressured me into choosing McMaster ArtSci (thankyousomuchMomandDad)) and so I did a lot of asking around about that, was in correspondence with someone from McGill Arts and Science as well as Mac ArtSci.

McGill: Choose and art and a science. Learn ALL the things about them! Bigger class sizes, not that it matter though because you're not in the same courses or anything.

Mac: Interdisciplinary state of mind. Explore ALL the new things! (then if you want combine in yo fave) Little bebe classes with interesting people.

Did that come off as biased? Maybe.
Oh well.

Let us know what you choose!

All my best,
Godzilla
