Before we start, I'll just five you a few pieces of information. I'm in grade 10, and I'm currently in Ontario. My marks aren't stellar, but in my defense my school is pretty tough with marking. Anything above a 95%+ final is nearly impossible and for English very, very, very few people can get a 90%. The 3 electives I took this year are Stained Glass (needed another art credit to fulfill a graduation requirement), Chemistry and Communications. Here are my marks:
First Semester Civics / Careers - 82% midterm, 83% final Communications Technology - 86% midterm, 79% final (His summative was killer, the whole class bombed it) Science (SNC2DI) - 97% midterm, 95% final (Extremely pleased with this!) English (ENG2DI) - 86% midterm, 89% final
Second Semester (6 week progress reports, not midterms) History (CHC2DI) - 100% (Based on one assignment so pretty much irrelevant) Chemistry (SCH3UI) - 97% (2 unit tests, 2 major assignments, lots of mini projects, 4 labs entered) Math (MPM2DI) - 92% (Incredibly proud of myself for this one, not to brag. Math I struggled with a little last year but I managed to pull together so far. This mark is based on 2 unit tests, 2 quizzes and 2 assignments). Stained Glass (AWA20I) - 88%
My projected courses for next year and grade 12:
Grade 11
Physics (SPH3UI) Biology (SBI3UI) Chemistry (SCH4UI) Functions (MCR3UI) English (ENG3UI) Canadian Law (CLU3MI) Introduction to Anthropology, Sociology and Psychology (HSB3MI) ??????
Grade 12
MHF4UI (Functions) MCV4UI (Calculus and Vectors) SPH4UI (Physics) SBI4UI (Biology) SES4UI (Earth and Space science. I have no real desire to take this but its recommended and the class average is generally high) ENG4UI
The problem is - what do I do with my final grade 11 course? I'm lined up for a hard year but I think having Data Management (MDM4UI) could come in handy since its also recommended for most science programs. Fast-tracking Chem and Data could be handy because then I'll have 8 Grade 12 U courses when I graduate and all of them are courses that universities want/suggest. I'm also thinking of getting English over with in summer school because it gives me a spare in grade 11 (allowing me to do the ridiculous amount of work I'll have) but I don't know about summer school. I'm fairly strong at English but I question if I could pull out a decent mark in it during summer school. A lot of people take it early in my school and walk out with fairly high marks (85's, usually). I always do well on my essays but they scare me a lot (I don't know why but I stress about them more than anything).

Pick a grade 12 course... OR Take a spare...and do a grade 12 course in the summer. Data or English...whatever you want, you can't go wrong with picking one over the other.
And your marks are great!

I actually ended up taking both Data and 12 Chem in my Grade 11 year and it wasn't too bad. Just prepare yourself for a bit of a challenge and work through it. In my opinion, taking Data is a great idea. From my experience, people either ace the class or do rather poorly. You'll find that it is completely different from Grade 11 Math. Instead of just plugging and chugging numbers into an equation, you have to use logic to find your answer. With that being said, there's really only one or two "hard" units in Data. If you can understand permutations and combinations, the rest of the course is easy.
Having more than 6 courses definitely gives you a bit of flexibility when your in Grade 12. Look into the programs that you're interested in. Do they need Data? Or can Data be used to replace another prerequisite? If you're really worried about your course load in Grade 11, consider summer school. I had a first period spare last semester and it was awesome being able to sleep in while all my friends where in class.

I always do well on my essays but they scare me a lot (I don't know why but I stress about them more than anything). Your courses are great, and it's great that you've planned your grade 12 schedule as well, because too many people don't plan their grade 12 schedule and find out that they don't have the prerequisite. It's up to you, but if I was you I wouldn't take HSP3M1 or CLU3M1. I would take some grade 12 courses (not Advanced Functions, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Physics because they are important). Data Management is a good course to have, it can replace one of your other maths in some cases. The best elective for grade 11 I can recommend is Grade 11 Accounting. It is a prerequisite for Grade 12 Accounting, and it is very easy. You may even use it as an average booster for grade 12. A lot of people regret in my school wish they picked Accounting instead of Law or Anthro as their elective, because Accounting is a prerequisite. Even if you don't like Accounting 11, you can still take Law or any social science course, but you can't do it the other way around. For your last course, I would recommend an easy grade 12 course like International Business, Business Leadership, or any EASY tech course. Just make sure if you pick an easy grade 12 course that you KNOW you can get at least a 90+ in it because getting a 70 in one elective and a 94 in another elective makes a 4% difference in your average. But your courses are great, Earth and Space Science is a good course to take if you know you can get a good mark in it because it also can be used sometimes to replace a science mark. Take some average boosters in Grade 12 also. Good luck! Applying to:

I'm just a little worried since you said I'll either sink or float :/. But at my school data seems pretty easy considering most people who take U/C math in grade 11 take it and do fine. I think I'll take it and put my best effort forward. I'm a little nervous for it. Quote:The best elective for grade 11 I can recommend is Grade 11 Accounting. Not enough people take it so there's usually not enough to take up a full course. Alright, so I'll probably tailor my schedule like this when I talk to my guidance counselor: Semester 1 (in no specific order) Functions Biology Anthro Physics Semester 2 Spare Chemistry Data Law I can't really tailor it so they're balanced...

And people tell me that grade 11 law is a waste of time, I think taking grade 12 law would be better. You'll have 3 extra grade 12 courses to choose your top 6 from. Applying to:

Want my suggestion? Take an easy course. Your courses are great, and will open a wide breadth of possibilities for you in whatever you want to do. And yet, they are all quite challenging courses. I suggest you take a simpler, mark-booster course, if you do not want a spare, as that can raise your average and lighten the load on you. I agree with the Challenge and Change/Family Studies, that's not too difficult a course. Do you have Media Arts? Taking English in summer school is a good idea, I personally did not, mostly cause i was taking another summer school course, but I know many people that do and liked the chance to get it over with. I'm glad I didn't cause I had an awesome teacher, but that's just me :D I don't recommend you fast track too much. Maybe one course. You really don't want to get ahead of yourself. Take it pace by pace. And if you don't need Data, don't take it. In alot of programs, it's just recommended, unless you want to apply to Sociology, Psychology, and Anthropology, and for many, it's not even listed as recommended. And the same goes for Advanced Functions/Calculus. If you don't need it, don't take it. If you're doing any science, engineering, or management/commerce program, sadly you will need them, but if not. consider your options. Don't just take every hard course, it'll get very frustrating for you. I actually started preparing for things in my Grade 10 year (hurray for us early planners!), and thankfully I knew what I wanted to get into (Computer Science), so I could narrow down my course options. Good luck! :) University of Toronto - St. George Campus - Class of 2016 Computer Science/Sociology Double Major Trinity College

Quote:I agree with the Challenge and Change/Family Studies, that's not too difficult a course. Do you have Media Arts? We have Media Studies (EMS30I) but apparently you do nothing and get seemingly random marks. And those other two courses are a possibility, but is there lots of essays for them? Which one has less? The teachers at my school that teach them are really good so if there's not a lot of work than I'll take it. I just am not very fond of essays (I have trouble coming up with the points for the three body paragraphs but I'm a strong writer, if that makes sense). I'm also going to be pursuing science courses in university specifically Physics, Chemistry and/or Physical Chemistry. For most programs I'll need any two sciences (I'm taking all three because though they're a lot of work they interest me), English (mandatory anyway), Advanced Functions and Calculus/Vectors. I'm taking Law as a bird course (there's only one teacher and if you suck up and do your work she hands out 90s like they're nothing) and I need a social science credit to graduate so that's where Anthro comes in.

Actually I think Law counts as a social science credit anyway, so in that case, you wouldn't really need to take Anthro. University of Waterloo: Systems Design Engineering Class of 2017
