For summer school I am planning on taking Advanced Functions day summer school and Earth & Space Science during eclass summer school. I am currently in grade 10 and the guidance counsellor said she feels like I am rushing, however, I want to because it will give me a larger selection of courses at the end of grade 12 to choose from for university. I am also interested in Earth & Space Science so I think this course will be very interesting for me, however, I feel like people might be biased on my choices. What do you guys think? I know I will be able to dedicated myself towards the work load for one month. Applied: * University of Toronto St. George [University College] - Economics/Social Science (Accepted: May 16 2013) ---> ATTENDING * University of Toronto Scarborough - Psychology (Accepted: May 16 2013) * University of Guelph - Mathematics (Accepted: May 16 2012)
All on the same day, interesting!

Hey Linnifer, I meant I am going to take BOTH courses during summer, just AF day school and E&S online. Doing math in summer school is still risky business though, a lot of the applications portions are still cut down because you only have a month to learn everything. But then again, that always depends on what sort of teacher/how well they time manage and also whether you plan on doing Calculus. It's not a bad idea though. What are you planning to go into? Don't worry! Yes, I will have to take Calculus because I will be going into the life science program, most likely at University of Toronto. Most people say Advanced Functions and Calculus are almost separate though. Most people say Advanced Functions and Calculus are almost separate though. The way I look at Calculus, it's basically the easier way to do whatever you learned in Advanced Functions. Things like reducing to first quadrant, I had to use for Trig Limits, and the concepts for curve sketching that you learn in Advanced Functions are applied in Calculus. Maybe it depends on how your teacher teaches it I guess; I know some teachers do a little review of Advanced Functions concepts before certain units so everything is a little easier to do whereas my teacher just assumes we know. Just wondering, why aren't you doing English in summer school? McMaster Arts and Science, Class of 2016

It's really great to hear from someone who has taken Calculus already. I guess you're right, it depends on the teacher. I also wanted to summer school grade 11 english, however, they don't offer it eclass and I really want to finish my maths so in grade 12 I can focus on my sciences. Next year I don't want to have three sciences + two maths... which is why I am summer schooling Advanced Functions. Earth and Space is a waste course. I got an 84, but I wouldn't take it again if I had the chance. I would take something more useful. Your Choice in the end.

Personally, I would just take Advanced Functions normally and take Earth and Space in summer school. I haven't taken AF yet but since it is the prereq for Calc and Calc's hard, I wouldn't take the risk of not having enough background knowledge. Again, I haven't taken AF or Calc yet so I wouldn't really know..... but I'd stay on the safe side lol.
As for Earth and Space, I was taking it and dropped about a week into it because it wasn't what I was looking for - I was looking more for the space aspect and it seemed like too much geo the way my teacher described it. (Not surprising though since the course is called EARTH and space... there's got to be some geography involved in that..) It shouldn't be too hard of a course (but I don't really know since I dropped out before any evaluations) either.
tl;dr - take AF normally, Earth and Space in the summer :)

I took Earth and Space Science online and felt that it was a bird course, but not in the sense that the workload was light. I would often get several assignments a week over the duration of a semester and although it was fairly easy to understand, much of it was tedious and unnecessary. If you believe you will have enough time to concentrate on both courses, I would definitely take the course. September 2012 Admissions Cycle

Don't take both at once. My friend took grade 12 physics in day summer school and grade 12 computer science in online summer school. She almost failed physics because she had so many assignments in comp sci. She simply couldn't concentrate enough on both courses at the same time to get a good mark and she ended up dropping physics. So take one or the other in summer school. I suggest you take earth sci in summer school because it's easier and isn't a very important mark (it's not usually a uni prerequisite). You need to do well in advanced functions as it is required for many programs and it will be harder to learn in summer school because you have less time. McGill Class of 2016

Hey! I was planning on doing the same thing this summer, with two different courses this summer, but my guidance counsellor told me that you can either take day school or e-learning. So, I think you should recheck and make sure taking both courses is even an option. As for the courses, I know someone who took SES and it is pretty easy to ace as long as you keep up with the work. Functions on the other hand is another story, you should really consider taking it in regular school. Applied to:
Univeristy to Toronto - Rotman Commerce
Accepted:
Schulich iBBA University of British Columbia - Sauder School of Business & General Science University of Toronto Scarborough: Co-op Management Simon Fraser University - BBA

im in Grade 10, taking grade 11 functions, so next year I'll be taking AP advanced functions, and a university course in Grade 12. i think it is a good idea to take MHF4U in the summer only if you know what you are going to do for the next two-one year left of high school. im taking a e-learning course next year too!
