Hello,

I'm a student at the University of Toronto, planning to pursue either an Economics or Economics and Mathematics Specialist.

I understand that the University of Toronto is a popular destination for many Secondary School graduates, so I thought I'd offer up my expertise and answer any questions you may have.

I can help dispel (or confirm!) scary rumours, answer questions about the application process, or whatever is on your mind. My specific knowledge is of Maths and Economics, so I can help applicants planning to enter that field.

I applied for Life Science program. Would I still be able to major in mathematics and economics 2nd year, or would I have to redo a year in physical sciences (as opposed to life sciences).

Another question I have is, how hard is the Mathematics and Economics program and in general the physical science programs. Would it be possible to get an 85+ through really hard work?

Lastly, do top grad schools in either Finance or Financial Mathematics like UofT math/eco students?

Thanks a lot man!

Hey, kw94.

I don't know anything specific, unfortunately. I'm at the St. George campus, so I doubt I could even comment on the courses.

Apologies,

I wanted to know how can I go towards management because they accepted to social science. Can I combine economics with management ? I never took calculus I had advanced functions and data management. I also got accepted into York for finance and business economics. Which one do u think would be a better choice?

Hey, Yolo30.

It doesn't matter what your original acceptance was. All you need to do is look at the first year prerequisites for the Management programme, and make sure you cover them. I'm not sure about UTM, but at UTSG, those who were accepted for Commerce will be given priority for prerequisite courses during course selection. It shouldn't be too much of an issue, but you might need to wait a bit before you can enroll in in-demand courses.

Another thing - at UTSG, in order to cover the first year mathematics requirement (which I believe Management has), you need to have taken Calculus and Vectors. I'd make sure you've got your bases covered. Worst comes to worst, summer school is always an option. It's what I did.

I can't really compare other universities. I know that U of T is, on the whole, a much better institution than York, especially in terms of prestige. But I heard York has quite a good business programme, so it might be worthwhile if you're going into that specific area of study.

All the best,

It’s quite considerate of you to answer our questions on studentawards.

Have you ever heard of something called “___calendar”? I can't recall exactly the name of it but it was along the lines of “uncalendar’ or “undercalendar”.
An U of T rep at the open house told me it was a so-called calendar published by UofT students in which they would comment on the level of difficulty of courses, profs, etc. I visualize it as being something similar to a forum where UofT students would answer prospective UofTstudents’ questions.

Hey, ManUtd123.

First off, awful choice in team. Thumb down

If you select the courses necessary for the Mathematics and Economics programme in first year, you won't need to repeat any years or do any additional courses. But I wouldn't suggest taking the Life Science and Math/Econ prerequisites at the same time. I can assure you that you'll have a coronary episode come exam season.

An 85+ is not attainable for the vast majority of students. I believe even the students graduating with the highest averages in their years have rarely maintained marks consistently above 85%. I've managed to pull it for a few classes, but I'm normally in the 80 - 85% range, which is difficult enough to maintain as it is. Compounded by the difficulty of Mathematics and Economics as a programme, I wouldn't pin your hopes on getting such high marks. It's possible, but I wouldn't call it likely.

Sure. If you manage to get a 3.5+ GPA at U of T, you're in good shape to go just about anywhere. The programme is rigorous, and if you come out of it with a decent set of marks (although third and fourth year carry the most weight), you'll be prepared to tackle some seriously prestigious graduate schools.

Best of luck,

Hey MattUK,
I'm starting UofT St. George for Humanities (Ethics, Society and Law) in september & while im in LOVEEE with the campus, i'm really scared about whether i'll be able to maintain my grades or do well or will i have time to study (because i'll be commuting from brampton, about 90 mins each way, MAX)

Is anyone else in the same program/faculty? or do you know anything about the program (humanities) or the faculty of arts/sci. ANY kind of input will be appreciated!

thanks! (:

It is not hard to maintain your grades, although I don't suggest commuting to school if it will take you more than 90 minutes. Often there are morning classes and you will end up being tempted to sleep in. I personally have a 45 minutes long commute and I find it quite pleasant.

It is not hard to get a 4.0 GPA at U of T, you just have to be slightly hard working and somewhat intelligent.

Hi,I am hesitating between u of t and western, how do you access economics in these two universities? I've accepted by new college at u of t. Is new college a good one? BTW, does it really matter if I have co-op or not? I am likely to get into commerce in mcmaster, so I just wonder if I should go study for commerce in mcmaster or economics in either u of t or western?thanks a lotthumright:

Sorry to hijack the thread but I saw this and figured I would respond to it as a UTM economics major, even though it may be too late to help the poster. As far as I know you can't combine management and economics. Your best bet is to work very hard next year and get into commerce where you can take certain management courses to go along with being able to take classes towards getting an economics major. I will tell you right now that UTM economics destroys people in first year. If you are actually serious about pursuing an economics degree take the harder section being taught by Prof. Bailey and be prepared to work, as assuming you don't take the cupcake second year commerce micro class you will have him for 200 as well. He is very mathematical and doesn't take kindly to lecture stoolies, but if you take the section taught by Prof. Ho first year you will join the droves of UTM students running to St. George to take the second year economics classes.

Regarding you not having taken calculus, you are at a bit of a disadvantage as ECO100 is much easier if you know how to differentiate functions, but MAT133 is somewhat adequate preparation for ECO200/206 as well as ECO220/227 which you will have to take in second year. I will warn you that economics is a very math heavy subject, and since for some reason we don't have ECO210 here you will have to learn a bit of math on your own if you hope to succeed. All that said I have heard rumours that MCV4U and MHF4U are both needed for ECO100 here and you need a 70% in both. This may be the case, but I looked at the newest course calender, found here https://registrar.utm.ut...metable/index.php#show, and cant see the two gr 12 maths listed as a prereq ...

Hi,

I have a question. I got into Mcmaster Lifescience and U of T [st George] Human biology and I am wondering, if i want to do something in research, which is best?

Also is U of T really hard, or is it just an over exaggeration. Is the fact that you would flunk most of your courses and die, true?

Is it also true that you can't make any friends at U of T? Is it also true that it is harder to approach U of T PROFS rather than Mcmaster ones?

Any help is appreciated. I know you are not doing science but you would know these right?

Hi, rankiba.

I can't say for sure, but I'd imagine low eighties would be the bare minimum in order to be "safe". U of T is surprisingly easy to get into - it's doing well once you're in that most students find difficult.

Hello, Star007.

I can't answer your first question (it's too subject specific), but the others are more common rumours about U of T. And I can say with certainty that all are a major exaggeration.

U of T is tough, but universities in general are tough. Although U of T may be tougher (I couldn't confirm that, as this is the only university I've attended), no matter where you go, you're going to find the coursework challenging and the competition stiff.

You do not flunk your courses and die. I'm not even sure poor grades induced death exists. Class averages are much lower than you're used to in High School, so you need to pick it up if you want to get A's. But the myth that everyone either fails or has to lock themselves in their room to pass is just that - a myth. I just got my marks back this week, and they were all A's. I went out, I made friends, I joined clubs and, of course, I studied. I didn't have to lock myself away to get those grades - that's just scare-mongering; unfortunately often spread by U of T students who aren't doing as well as they'd hoped.

I made friends at U of T. The people who attend the university are just people, not some strange alien life form - why wouldn't you make friends?

Professors are very easy to access. Less so in first year, because they have huge classes and many eager students clambering for face time, but as you progress in your degree, you'll find plenty of opportunities to chat with your professors. In my first year, I spent hours with one of my professors, and she offered me a two week research trip to Vietnam - just by taking the initiative to show enthusiasm and interest in the course.

I hope this helped. Don't listen to people who make U of T out to be some overbearing monstrosity from which no student returns. It's just untrue.

Best of luck,
MattUK

thank you Matt.

Yes I admire U of T and I am accepting the offer. Too many people around me always put down U of T for weird reasons. I now understand that its just they couldn't achieve at U of T and they blame it on the uni. You actually really helped me.

Thank you so much!

Hey I just felt like saying 90 minutes isn't that bad that's probably taking the go bus to union then a subway ride &junk! For example majority of students who go to York commute and that is probably the average commute time. However I wouldn't recommend it for first year. My sister went to UofT St.George Campus and try commuting 3hrs to get there 3hrs back for 3years(brampton too). She was able to keep up a 4.0 gpa in life sciences. At the end of the day you need to know the type of person you are, can u be that committed person for the next 4years? I know am not haha so just saying.. !

Hey MattUK,

I have 3 major questions for you. I really hope you can help me with those!
UofT is my top choice, however..I've heard from several people that they KILL you with the work load and it is extremely hard to keep up any decent GPAs ..since they really focus on their "International Students".

1. Is it hard to keep up a good GPA? Something worth applying to Law School with? [Law Schools need around a 3.7 in final year!]
2. Any thoughts on the Film Studies/Political Science/Criminology programs?
3. I got into Innis College. Is it really helpful in terms of student services, etc?

Thanks so much for all your help :)

Hello MattUK

I'm currently enrolled as a 5th year in a non-semester Ontario Highschool. I switched from a full on science/math student to a social science student in hopes to pursue law. My average was a 62% last year. I've retaken English, French and Law this year. My current average is a 84.6% with a 75% in English and a 83% average with a 69% English mark last term. I've applied to Political Science at University of Toronto St.George Campus. Several students with lower averages in my current grade have already received acceptances. I've also been reading other forums how students around my average being rejected. However, my guidance counselor told me to not worry about it. My application still says "Review Pending". I'm very worried. My questions are:
1. What are my chances of getting into UTSG?
2. Is it true that there's an Enlgish cut-off?
3. When will i possibly hear back from u of t?
4. If I do somehow get accepted, how much would my average have to drop to get acceptance revoked?

Thank you for taking your time reading this.
