I am a high school student who wishes to pursue a CA designation in ontario. As some of you might know the ICAO is considering the unification of CA,CMA, and CGA. I was wondering what your thoughts are on the unification of the designations if your a student who is studying accounting in uni or a CA in practice? Will it bring down the standards and reputation of CAs because CAs are generally thought of as higher level accountants and those who become CAs have to go through a tougher and more rigorous program than perhaps compared to CMAs and CGAs? aha hope someone replies

First, congrats on thinking so far ahead in to the future! It's a good thing to know what your options are and do some research in to potential careers. I'm a current CA articling student at an international firm in Vancouver. Assuming you're in grade 12 this year... that means you would be graduating university in 2016, right? Right now it looks like they are trying to get the merger going well before that date, so any way it goes for you, you'll probably be under the new program if it does go through. So if it does go through, all accounting students in Canada would pursue a CPA designation and you have nothing to worry about. If it doesn't go through and there are still three designations then I would definitely recommend the CA designation. I chose the CA designation over the other two because it's the most recognized internationally and the most rigorous program. I don't want to spend too long discussing my personal opinion so I'll just recommend the link below to the website for the merger itself. If they merged into a CPA, what would be some major differnces between a CA? Would there be major salary differnces?

To a non-partner CA, the merger doesn't seem like the greatest idea. The new CPA program is likely to see a program similar to the CASB in Western Canada and then a uniform exam similar to the UFE. The experience requirements will also be easier- you will be able to get them at a far wider range of firms, and it will also likely be 2 years of experience versus 3. As a result, some of the reciprocity agreements with institutes in other countries are likely to be lost.

My Dad is a CA at the moment
A few years ago I asked him what was the difference between a CA and a CPA and his answer was "CPA is soo much easier".
His thoughts are that if this merger was to occur, the standards would either raise to the CA standards, or lower to the CPA standards.
