:O I heard that the results are coming out on May 10th (Not complete sure though)

EDIT: And I heard something about the results being delayed because of mid-semester marks.

Hey guys,

So I don't really think I'm going to get into HSc, especially with you amazing people applying.

Hence, I need to choose between Mac Nursing and Western BioMed with Scholar's Electives. Any suggestions?

Don't knock yourself out of the race just yet. LOL watch you get in. :P But if worst comes to worst, I highly recommend Scholar's Electives. I wrote somewhat of a Scholar's Electives explanatory essay on page 46 of this topic. If you're interested in reading it, it's there. And you want to become a doctor, no? Then, nursing... why...

Ah well...I mean, the most we can do is try our best, right? Let's try not to worry about the things we can't control :)

I did too! Despite whether I end up getting in or not, I like my responses. They were pretty entertaining to write, plus I hadn't ever tried to define myself before.

Not knowing when acceptances will be released is the worst part though!! Just rip the band-aid off Mac

If you're going for engineering, Waterloo is the best engineering school in Canada -- arguably second to U of T (but that depends on your post-undergraduate plans).

And also nanotechnology is the future, just sayin'. ;) There's tons of forum discussions you can find around the web on Waterloo NanoEng if you google your way around. Also, there's a Facebook group you can ask to join where you can talk to the upper years already in the program. Go nuts on that haha because I sure did.

Best of luck!

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to wish you all the best of luck! :) I am a student in BHSc, but I remember what it felt like being in your position last year!

I very much agree that you will learn to love and do amazing at whatever program you end up attending! Even if you don't get BHSc, don't beat yourself up! It really doesn't mean anything! :p

The whole process is on the whole, extremely subjective (and just to clarify the marks above 90% are ONLY ever used to break ties in supp app scores, which happens rarely), but they do try their best to see if you would be a good fit for the program.

Regardless, if you do get into the program, you should know that you are in for a blast!!! I don't want to spoil the many surprises that will be coming your way, but expect the unexpected!

Cheers,

Yeah, I totally agree on the subjectivity part. It really depends on whether or not the person reading your supp app likes it or not. So like pretty much all admission processes, it's a lottery. You can work as hard as you can to put yourself into that lottery, but whether it's your name that gets pick or someone else's will be ultimately based on luck.

But those that do get in, you have SO MUCH to look forward to. Especially first year cell biology. In that course, there are so many group projects, and I have to say it was an amazing experience. You do all those projects with your group so you really get a chance to get to know your group members really really well, and you get so many opportunities to develop your intra/interpersonal skills. You learn so much about yourself in the process.

I knew that Health Sci was big on developing those skills, and that was one of the main reasons why I chose this program. I got into the math/accounting and engineering programs at Waterloo, but I ultimately decided on health science because I thought that learning how to learn, how to get along with others, and how to grow, is infinitely more important than learning the intricacies of exam taking and efficient cramming. Here's just my two cents... I hope I've helped solidify your decisions. :) Good luck!

Let's be serious though guys. While luck does play a bit of a role, it comes down to your supp app. I disagree with all those people who say they won't be sad if they don't get in. The only reason we're on this forum is because of how bad we want it. Although I've told my self a hundred times it will still work out if I don't get in, I've worked so hard for it (just as everyone else has. Everyone is super qualified and is doing great!). Maybe it's just the nerves and anxiety but I am SO apprehensive for this Friday. I just want to know one way or another!

Re; marks as tie-breakers. I thought that the whole supp app was only marked out of 7 points. Am I wrong- is it out of 21 (7x3=21, one for each question)? Either way you slice it, aren't ties extremely common, because you're throwing 4000-6000 applicants into 7-21 point groups (assuming the distribution of marks is exactly even, which it probably isn't- there's probably something like a normal distribution curve to it, making the number of people with the same supp app mark even higher)?

:( in which case, don't marks make a huge difference? :(

They actually average it, so it's out of 7 in total. But either way, they will take all the applicants who scored 7 first, so marks don't matter if your supp app is amazing. If you have a 7, you will be accepted regardless of your top 6 average unless the applicant pool is above average (ie. 200+ people scoring perfect supp app scores). Where it usually starts to matter is for the people scoring an average of 5-6, because they're fighting for maybe the last 20-30 spots.

seriously guys...this is like winning a lottery-- I heard there are around 6000 ppl that applied this year. Don't get too anxious or get your hopes too high, focus on your studies (AP EXAMS!!! @_@)

It'll be nice if I get in though, I'll probably go there. Now I'm deciding between McGill or UW NanoEng (...any advices?)

Been reading this forum thread everyday since it was created. Never felt the need to voice my opinion until I saw this.

I, too, am applying to the program. MANY, MANY people have the same opinion as tony here, but here's the misconception guys. When they say it's like winning the lottery, its not because its based on luck, but rather the applicant pool and the 4th year markers. When people constantly told me about it being a lottery I got really down and depressed, as I thought, 'What's the point if it's just about the luck? What a load of bs'

But here's the thing guys. Sure, not all 4th year students mark the same, but they are given general guide lines to follow and all their markings are reviewed AND APPROVED by a faculty member. So impacts between 4th year reviewers are minimized.

Then the only variable that is left unknown is the strength of the applicant pool that year. This is how it should be. This will allow strongest candidates should get in. This is fair.

Now you're probably reading this and thinking well how does this help relinquish the anxiety. Well basically it means if you didn't get in you weren't a strong enough CANADIATE to get in. Notice how I worded it. It's not that you weren't smart enough or anything, rather you just didn't fit well enough with THEIR SPECIFIC requirements to be a top candidate.

What they're specific requirements are? who knows! we just have a basic idea of character, problem-based thinking, self-directed, etc. Nothing concrete.

So the point being is, if you wrote a kick ass supplementary that blew the minds of the markers and was better than 90-95% of the applicants in terms of their requirement, then you should get in.

So when thinking if you're getting in or not, think about that last paragraph and how your supplementary would compare.

If anyone could see any flaws in this thinking, please do correct me. (e.g. Bowchickawow, andrewk, futuredoc, inthemaking, etc.)

EDIT: HOLY CRAP! As it is my first time posting i didnt realize my username is my real name.

EDIT2: OH GOD. YOU CANNOT CHANGE YOUR USERNAME. Well this will be my last post forever.

LOL!!! Your edits really made me laugh a lot.

But on a more serious note, I wish I could say "word." But I don't know, there are a lot of realllyyy qualified people (definitely more than 160 from this 5,000-person pool). I do believe that, in the end, as sad as this may be, it comes down to simple luck. :( Oh and I just reread my essays. LOL whoever reads my responses will either think I am a retarded moron or an insightful genius. FML. I'm hoping for the latter of the two. XP

Wow, you guys! Lol. First of all, let's all take a deep breath. Second of all, I'd just like to say that this is the funniest situation ever because I actually went to the March Open House at McMaster and the woman in charge of the BHSc admissions told everyone in the room that they received around 2450 applications this year, not 6000, rest assured. TonyY2dC, always seek for the answer yourself! All this commotion for nothing! Haha.

Their exact words were "By the end of next week" on the twitter page. So Friday seems like a good guess.

Uh, one of my older friends who didn't get into the program (and she had her heart set on it for a few years) called admissions to give them a piece of her mind LOL (in a civilized way, I'm sure though) and they gave her her "ranking". She was placed 240-something on the list. That really sucked, but if they would release that information, they'd most likely be okay with letting you know your supp app score. Just try calling in -- it couldn't hurt. That's actually exactly what I'm planning on doing.

NOW I JUST NEED THE DAMN DAY TO COME ALREADY.

Since may@mac is on Saturday, they probably won't send out acceptances the day before their open house for admitted students. My best guess is Thursday at the latest. Then again, you never know with McMaster...

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but that is precisely what happened last year. [Ontario] acceptances on the 6th, May at Mac on the 7th.
