Um, I'm pretty sure there is no sure way to illustrate yourself as the "kind" of student they are looking for... everyone is different and will be judged, for the most part, by different fourth years so as long as you present yourself in the best light... right?? But I have talked to people applying this year who have used your suggested approach, aquarius. I guess we'll have to see by Friday. If this is true, I'm going to throw my faith and respect for individuality out the window. Also, I'm certain the fourth years don't have access to these details. Someone (inthemaking) correct me if I'm wrong. Folks, Although there is a luck component involved in Mac Health Sci admissions (due to different people marking and such), they do their best to make it as fair as possible. Usually, the three marks assigned to each supp app are similar, but in cases where there is a significant discrepancy between marks for a single supp app, they get a fourth person to mark it. If you have ,then your chances of getting in is probably high . I think there is a reason why (saw last year's supp) they ask for your name , school name, address etc . They have to be as diverse as possible in their acceptance or otherwise they could have just marked the application based on the OUAC # and not ask for personal details. It's pure luck from here on ! and if you get rejected there are probably other factors that play a much bigger role than your marks and supplementary application.
Anyway ,Good Luck to all of you'll and I'm sure glad I did not apply. Too much stress !!!!!!
so youre saying mcmaster is racist? O_O racist is not the word I would ever use because I know non of the schools in Canada really are ..... I just think every school has a certain quota and criteria that they may have to fulfill. I just find it personally weird that they get to see your personal info when marking your supplementary application. In one of the questions that they had asked the previous year was, If there were one question which should not be asked , what would the question be and why - my answer without even thinking for a sec was not to ask personal information question on this supplementary application and I would have given them exactly why and it has nothing to do with racism, absolutely. Perhaps the school is asking for your address , because they have a certain quota for out of province students. Who here really knows for a fact that the admission criteria is solely based on marks and supplementary application and the top 160 or whatever the number is gets in automatically. If that is ever the case , in my opinion we have that 160 in this forum itself . well med school admission is like that too. black people have like 3 times the chance of getting admitted compared to asians (forgot the exact stats) if they have the same gpa/mcat score so meh.. i guess we'll just have to get used to it. ps it was for american med schools but i'm pretty sure canadian med schools do this too, someone confirm? all i remember was asians were at the bottom and black were at the top with white somewhere in the middle. i wouldn't call it racism, more like distribution since so little black people apply in the first place, lol

okay i'm not 100% positive, but the vast majority of canadian undergraduate schools do not have an affirmative action policy in place with the exception of first nations applicants. i hiiiiighly doubt mcmaster has ethnic quotas to fill, but correct me if i'm wrong. also, not all american med schools look at your background; for example, affirmative action was abolished in the state of california years ago. dunno bout you guys but i'm personally not a big fan of the idea. Wahhhh, this week is going to be the longest! I've been reading through this forum since January, adding sporadic replies every once in a while. Anyways, here are my supp. app essays. They're not as good as what I've previously read, and I tried to take the advice of not trying to be so wordy, instead getting to the point with a personal flair. The 2nd essay is my favourite, and I took a serious risk with the 3rd one, hoping the judges will realize that I really wanted them to get a personal glimpse. Any comments would be greatly appreciated :) My father always told me: “Life isn’t just about succeeding, but it’s about the lives that you impact.” When he first gave me that advice, I barely understood; of course, I was only seven-years old. Now, I realize that I was provided the foundation that led me to become the driven and determined young person that I am today. Since the raw days of my childhood, I've been an athlete, musician, tutor, sales associate, volunteer and designated leader. I strive for excellence; not in specific areas, but all areas of opportunity. Being a student, it'd be easy to define my life with endless cycles of studying and extra curriculars. However, eight hours, five days a week isn't even close to the majority of my time spent, hence, my family values. Growing up as a Vietnamese-Chinese Canadian with immigrant parents, I've learned from a young age how important it is to stay true to your family. They were the trigger of my aspirations into the world of medicine; where I will make a difference with families in need of care. I now realize the big picture is about the future’s successes, waiting to be claimed, rather than yesterday’s accomplishments. Along the path of life's unraveling, I will try to define my surroundings and turn illusions of desire into reality. I don't believe that is what would be deemed a "definition"; rather a story that is currently being written. I'm not confined by the barriers of a label, instead striving to evolve into the person I've always dreamt of becoming. Within the vast world of literature and plentiful streams of words, it has taken much thought to choose a single four-lettered term that should be preserved in the English language. One single word could strike a memory, cause a flashback or sum up life-long events. It would only take one word to give a book a title, name a human being or begin a new relationship. If I had the opportunity or delegation to designate one word that must be conserved forever in the English language, it would be 'wish'. Easy to say and only a syllable with no silent or strangely pronounced vowels, it is simple for this word to be added into anybody's vocabulary. We're taught how to say and the meaning of 'wish' during childhood. Often-used phrases such as "don't forget to make a wish before blowing out the candles", "make a wish on the shooting star" or "be careful what you wish for" are introduced to us at a young age, giving the impression that there is some sort of mechanism behind wishing that can transform our ambitions into existence. We learn that desire can lead to truth, and obtain the idea of hope and achievement. At a young age, we're taught that no matter how far-fetched our dreams may be, there's still a strand of possibility in everything we do. We grow with these tendencies to dream and believe, allowing hunger and devotion to shape our own conclusions. A wish gives courage to face the future by embodying the opposition of impossibility. Friendship isn't a right, but a privilege. Let's be honest, it's impossible to be able to please everybody; even when she was your bestfriend -- of course, I emphasize on my past-tense phrasing. Two years ago, I lost a bestfriend of six years. We did everything together, and told eachother everything. She was my bestfriend, and she was whom I disliked most. Though a paradox, this phrase will make complete sense in a few moments. Everybody has experienced a relationship that was one-sided, and I was experiencing one for six years. We always fought; I always apologized. She would get angry; I'd grow worried. The cycle was neverending, and one day, I decided it had to come to a halt. She was the most difficult and unmanageable person I've ever met until this very day, and I couldn't handle any more negativity. One day, I decided enough was enough, and I told her exactly how I felt and the reasons as to why I can no longer have any affiliations with her. She wasn't even phased. This was the moment that I realized I needed to gain self respect, since it would be astonishing to receive any respect from her. Since I've erased her from my every day routines, I wonder if I gave up on our friendship, or if it was a friendship in the first place. The bottom line is, it took me years to realize that nothing is worth the feeling of imprisonment. Now, happy and surrounded by people that keep me positive, I'm proud to say that I overcame not a friendship, but a lesson of integrity. There has to be a reason for them asking these questions or otherwise our OUAC number alone should have been sufficient to find the top 160 in a pretty fairly manner. Just my 2 cents guys , btw I'm neither white or black.....but seriously, wish you'll the best and for those who don't get in , I just think it's nothing to do with your marks or supp application!! Good Luck!

Oh wow, everyone's starting to post their supps.
I really liked them all (can't get into specifics at the moment), but they were all great reads and a few that were quite thought provoking (in respect to how I can relate it my own life).
Am I the only one here that likes to (especially for the second response) think about how I would've written about that word or that scenario?
Also, it seems like I'm one of the few that's not completely stressing out over May 10th or 11th. Not sure if that's a good thing or not lol.
Well, good luck guys! Keep posting, it keeps me distracted while I study for my Chem test :P
