Which degree has the better career prospects at the moment, I've been accepted into both programs and need to decide. Any help is appreciated.

Oh where did you apply for journalism? I accepted my offer at Carleton, I'm excited! haha. :D I personally think journalism would be more beneficial than geography. Then again I could come off as biased here. What would you be planning to do with a geography degree if you don't mind me asking, I just feel as though journalism would offer you opportunities in a specific job area where as geography seems very broad and a little harder to pinpoint jobs for. Than again I could be totally wrong. I think you should just figure out which would be more beneficial in helping you reach your career goals. I also think journalism would be a much more interesting learning experience. I know a lot of people say journalism is dying but I feel like it's evolving more than anything else. Hope this could be even a little bit of help to you! :) Carleton University

I was accepted to Ryerson for journalism though am concerned about the future of the field, and am not all too passionate about it. As for what I'd do with a Geography degree, I was thinking either a teacher or an urban planner.

Neither degree will offer great career prospects on their own. It's very likely that you'll have to add something on to your Bachelor's to give yourself enough of an edge to compete in the job market, whether that be a master's or a post-graduate college program that teaches you more practical applications. That said, I would vote for geography. I know that there are fields within geography like urban studies/city studies/city planning that are booming right now and do have decent job opportunities with municipal and provincial governments. Again, you may have to do some additional years of schooling such as a masters or to break into such a job and you will have to work your way up. Journalism on the other hand is extremely competitive and the career prospects are less likely to be stable/full-time. You may be able to find work in journalism but it will likely be temp/piece-meal work that can be difficult to live off for quite a while after graduating (10+ years even). Are you a broke student? I've earned over $500 in amazon giftcards from Swagbucks since August, 2011. I haven't had to pay for a single textbook out of pocket since joining, and I have money left over for coffee! Interested?
