LJustin read my mind. And now I feel like even more of a jackass because of how harsh I was in critiquing his supp app. Sorry Justin. :( McMaster University 2016 Bachelor of Health Sciences

I've tried omitting as many identity clues as possible haha but anyway, here it is: The honest truth (in my opinion, please don't take this the wrong way): I think you had too many EC's in your essay. While it does show WHAT you do (and that you're really good at what you mention), I don't think it shows enough of WHO you are personality-wise. And with that said I'm not sure you completely answered the question. Like cuteshorty73 said about my first response it leaves me wondering about who you are. But I really liked your last bit with the name, it was a nice/strong way to conclude. And it's very well written. Like my English teacher would say you had really good diction. PS: I agree with lesson1 that you seem like a fantastic person. No, no, no, I appreciate your honesty. And I know, haha I like stuffed it with whatever I felt was really important. I just thought actions spoke louder than just words, so I included what I've been doing and I attempted a little humour (green tea, thumb-wrestling) but thank you for the feedback! :) Haha, yup I caught some of that humour too. I really like green tea too, though I can't remember the last time I thumb-wrestled (maybe cuz I always lose :P). And you're right, actions do speak louder than words. I guess the way you approached it just wasn't my cup of tea (lol @ terrible .. pun?). Have you read my supp before? I've posted/deleted it 3 times before. Best of luck, the wait is almost over. And what sucks is I don't have class on friday. Hello email + refresh button :D

Sorry Justin. :( No no, no need to apologize. Being harsh is good. I'd rather you be harsh so I can learn and improve for the next time I may stumble upon something like this. And besides, bad critiques tend to stick more than good ones (as you can evidently see) so next time I won't make the same mistake. :)

I went in knowing no one and by the time I left...I truly thought of everyone there as family. Did you write the National Bio Comp? I totally forgot about it so I did really bad. Good luck on your exam! I find if I have trouble focusing I turn off the comp and lock myself in a room with no TV/ipod/Computer/any other gadget. Maybe it'll work for you.

I am defined by my love of learning, taking on challenges, and a deep desire to excel at what I do. Consequently, I have a fierce commitment to accomplish my goals. This leads me to plan and organize my time appropriately, as well as put in the work necessary to succeed. I gain the most from each experience by being immersed in the situation and devoting myself to the cause. I also have a strong commitment to helping others. For example, although I dedicate many hours to academics, I make the time to share my knowledge with elementary school students as a volunteer mentor with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Halton. Witnessing each student's progress has made me proud to contribute to their academic and social success. My commitment as a mentor has also developed my patience and empathy. My resolve further applies to my hobbies. At the age of eight, I started playing the steel drum. Though I wasn't a natural, I practiced diligently and enhanced my musical skills. My hard work paid off and I became involved in performing and volunteering in The Caribbean Event, a charitable fundraiser that raises scholarship funds for deserving students who cannot afford post-secondary education. I am pleased that my commitment has allowed me to be a part of such a rewarding experience. My work ethic and dedication is apparent in all that I do. It has shaped me into the self motivated and enthusiastic individual that I am today and will continue to distinguish me in the future.
The word "hope" is simple, yet profound. Hope holds the unique ability to empower one with a resolve to survive through physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. It can also lead one to develop the strength to persevere and strive for a better future. Hope is a word which has prevailed through generations and carried with it numerous connotations. A word that can be used to express optimism, ambition, aspiration, and faith should most definitely be preserved. Consider the words of Anne Frank. During a time of persecution she wrote, "Where there's hope, there's life. It fills us with fresh courage and makes us strong again". In the near future, I will also personally testify to how the presence of hope can make a difference. In February, I will embark on a mission trip with a group of students to the Dominican Republic to build a home for a poverty stricken family. This project, befittingly called H.O.P.E. (Health, Opportunity, Prosperity, Education), will offer vigor to a mountain community lacking basic necessities. While watching videos and stories of past H.O.P.E. trips, I have witnessed how optimism, despite many hindrances, was reflected by a constant smile on the children's faces. Hope illuminates even the most dismal situation. Although merely four letters, hope is a word of infinite possibilities and should be preserved for the longevity of mankind. A world without hope would be like a world without light - life would wither away.
Soccer has always been a major aspect of my life. It has helped to develop my character and problem-solving skills by challenging me to deal with difficult individuals. One teammate in particular was frustrating to deal with because she was a naturally talented soccer player but she did not demonstrate a dedication or commitment to the team. Although we played in a competitive rep. league, her lack of attendance and poor attitude hindered the team's dynamic and our overall performance. As the team captain, I felt that I could compensate for my teammate's lack of effort by trying to fill her role, however, this proved to be inadequate. My next steps were to motivate her and lead by example. I encouraged all of her efforts, challenged her to do better, and expected more of myself to show that I was personally making changes. She responded positively and our team's success improved as we became united. I also knew that my actions gained the respect of my team when they collectively nominated me as their MVP. Through this experience, I learned that to succeed as a team we must support each other - we all win and lose together. Camaraderie, above all else, makes each tribulation more rewarding, as every accomplishment is achieved with one another in mind. This experience has moulded me into a confident and dedicated leader who tries to inspire and bring out the best in others. I also learned to solve problems in an effective and uplifting manner. I absolutely love yours! It's definitely my favourite so far... the perfect balance of straightforwardness and maturity. Just the way I like it! I would give you all sevens if it were up to me! To be honest, ours are pretty similar in content and organization, except I think yours is even better! Haha. For me, I found the first question to be rather difficult to start. Did anyone else have this problem? The question was "In your opinion, what defines you as you?" Were they looking for a defining moment? A specific characteristic? Or were they looking at what ideas or goals inspire you? This question could be interpreted in so many different ways. Eventually, I chose an umbrella answer and used half examples and half logic to back it up. Hope it works! Waterloo 2018 Honours Bachelor of Science (CAP 2012)
