According to the event today, UW Engineering has just about finalized all of its acceptances.

Just a heads up to anybody applying to engineering in future years, the mid-80s admission averages UW states on its website is highly inaccurate:

The median admission average for engineering was 91% this year(first time it's been >90% ever) and around 9000 people applied this year, an increase of 20% from last year. Hope this info helps, and best of luck.

WOW that makes me soo happy because I got into ECE with only an 87. D you know what the average and the minimum avgs were for electrical engineering by any chance?
I think you got accepted to EE (if I remember correctly from your previous posts)and have you requested a stream yet?

Got in with an 87% also, but the admissions committee decided my AIF was pretty strong, haha. The mid-80's was HIGHLY misleading. I originally applied to civil (which I didn't get) and the website said civil's admission average is 86%, lol.

I don't know or have not heard of anyone who got into ECE with under an 87, so i'd say that is very close to the cutoff. And yeah I chose ECE but I have no clue what stream i'd like lol.. what about you?

Yeah I know 2 other people who were rejected from civil with a 90 and high 80s average. My thought is that UW deliberately lowers their admission average on their website in order to receive more applications, which could mean more money from applications or maybe to maintain its reputation with a low admission rate.

waterloo doesn't have a set admissions average, its relative to the applicants...the averages they post on their website are from the previous year, which usually are a good estimate of the current year's average

I'm a Grade 11 student, signed up for 7 grade 12 courses for next year, going to apply to BOTH Math and CS (Co-op). And here is what I think: I will have no chance to get in to any of the programs if my average is <= 90%. So I can extrapolate/estimate:

Suppose I get these marks (based on past experience):
Advanced Functions, Calculus and Vectors, Data Management, Computer Science: 95-98 each
Physics: 85-90
English: 80-85
Accounting: same as English, excluded
Suppose things go bad and (95 * 4 + 85 + 80) / 6 = 90.8333333333333%
AIF: not many ECs, apart from (perhaps) being a general member of the Computer Science Club; [hoping to get a good score on both Euclid and CCC Senior, but if not, Euclid could be around 60 - 65, CCC could be around 40 - 45]......I can easily get a 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam with no problems.

The only concern I have is if my English mark becomes very bad (you know, English is teacher-dependent, you could be getting good marks from one teacher, say >85%, and get poor marks from another, say <80%)

Physics is not reqired for a Math major except Mathematical Physics or engineering, such as Software Engineering. But I want to use Physics courses to work towards a minor, so that I do not have to take courses offered by the Faculty of Arts that I do not like.

Class of 2017

Applied to
01 University of Waterloo - Mathematics (Co-op) - Major Area of Interest: Combinatorics and Optimization [Alternate Offer of Admission - Honours Mathematics, Regular, Combinatorics and Optimization] [2013-05-07] [OFFER ACCEPTED]
02 University of Toronto - St. George - Faculty of Arts and Science - Studies in Computer Science [Conditional Offer of Admission - 2013-02-13] [OFFER DECLINED]
03 McMaster University - Mathematics and Statistics I - Major Area of Interest: Mathematics/Computer Science [Conditional Offer of Admission - 2013-04-24] [OFFER CANNOT BE DECLINED]

Current top 6 average: 85
(I attend a non-semestered school)

The stats posted are about UW engineering, not math and CS (which are both under math). People get in with less than 90 ALL the time. I'm going to take a random guess and just say that UW Math and CS are (slightly) easier to get into than engineering. I got into all of the programs you mentioned with a flat 90 average, low 80 in English, good math contest scores (~90th percentile for Euclid) and didn't write the CCC. I think you think that UW is much harder to get into than it really is, lol

What you need to do is take one more course. Your top 6 is composed of literally 6 courses (you don't say?), and having an 85-90 physics in your top 6, while you can easily have a much easier course (whatever your school offers) can bring up your overall top 6 by 1-2% potentially. Other than that, you're on the right track. Its very easy to score decently on the AIF, I had next to no extra curricular activies before grade 12. What I wrote on my AIF was: art lessons, volunteering at a senior home, co-founder of computer science club, DECA general member, and working on an educational resource website with two other friends. Scored me a 4/5, and the only things I had before grade 12 were art lessons and volunteering.

How did you find out your score on the AIF? I'm kind of curious because I got lazy halfway through and only listed a couple activities lol.

E-mailed them. Friend got his score when he asked an admission question, so I figured I might as well ask them for the hell of it.

You can do that?! :O I'm curious to know what my AIF score was.
If you don't mind me asking, what exactly did you ask them?

I asked it pretty straight up, in like one sentence. Don't exactly remember, but I tried to sound polite/non-demanding but to the point.

That's pretty odd. This is what they sent me:

"Your AIF was given an above average score of 4/5. Scores of 4 and 5 are reserved for students who demonstrate a strong sense of purpose, are committed and engaged in a number of extracurricular activities, and most importantly, display evidence of excellence and employability.

Ultimately, your application was quite strong, with good marks and a strong profile. Your application simply fell short of the required levels for admission to Civil Engineering, one of our most competitive programs.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have further questions."

I'm thinking that they only gave it to me since I received an alternate offer. Actually, if you were admitted in February, they might not have even scored it... I submitted my AIF on the deadline, so I supposed the "submit within 2 weeks" thing doesn't really tie into anything, as I applied in November.

I got accepted into Management engineering with an 82+1/3%, lol. I didn't accept the offer of admission though.
