Hi, guys~~ Im going to York for CS in september  so i just wanna know 1. is it hard for a person who never took any computer class? how is the difficulty of cs?) 2. if i wanna do some studies in summer, can u guys give some advice that what kind of field should I focus on? like C, Java or calculus？can u recommend some books? 3. does cs require good english skills？ （ Im a jap FOB, came to canada in middle school..always worried that would be a barrier in my uni study) 4. if i want to take pre-med courses, is that too much work?? any answers would be appreciated, i know u guys are the best~~ THX

1. Assuming that you are good at Math and you have problem solving skills, it shouldn't be too hard for you to learn. I think there are a lot of students who go to university with out any background in computer science. 2, I don't know what they teach at York CS but I suggest you find out. You can buy books but the best things in life are free. You can find tutorials on youtube for popular languages like Java, C/C++. 3. Well I guess if you had an 70+ in Grade 12 English, you should be fine. 4. I've never done it. UTSC - Computer Science Coop 2016

You are going to be eaten alive. There are going to be people in your class who have been breathing BASIC since they were 4 years old. And living in Canada requires good English skills, lol. So make sure you have them.

I don't want to respond to you seriously, but I'd like to prevent OP from feeling distressed for no good reason. I can't comment on the validity of your statement, as people like that do exist. However, if the university isn't listing high-school CS courses as prerequisites, then there is no reason to believe that OP won't be prepared. Regardless of the university/program you are going into, I suppose nowhere does it say that CS experience is required. But if you want to learn some language, go into York's website to see what kind of language they teach, then look for tutorials about that particular language on YouTube or other sources, these are helpful for anyone, even if you are a beginner. Calculus, same deal, just go on YouTube and find stuff you are not familiar with, or stuff that you did not learn in high school (integration in particular) that is important for your sucess. The videos are very detail and easy to follow (provided that you have a minimum of 80% in Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors). You should start learning a programming language now while you can still change your university choice. A lot of people (da NUBZ) hate Computer Science because they suck at it. Make sure that you are able to write like a simple calculator. UTSC - Computer Science Coop 2016

And yes you will need the textbooks for linear algebra and discrete math but I'd but off buying textbooks until you actually get to uni because some unis require different textbooks. Also I would recommend that you concentrate on one programming language, probably C++, however c++ and Java have some similarities. UTSC - Computer Science Coop 2016

Id stay away from the pre-med courses, no point since its really tough to get into med school. lol, you guys are taking things way too serious May suggest an alternative? Enjoy the SUMMER! Go out have some fun, chill, take up an hobby, etc. You can worry about University when it starts. Seriously, you will not learn really hard stuff in first year. And CS is easy anyways. NΨ 1T5

Nope. I was born here, grammar nazi. I don't have to have perfect english have. It is implied by my citizenship. :)

Try to contact the professor at york. I did that for my cs program and he told told me java and even sent me his website filled with notes and old examinations.
