What are some good non-math electives to take first year for computer science coop students?
Is it possible to take any ECE courses first year? I think those courses would be more relevant than some random science or humanities courses.

Take something you are interested in. Don't take a course just because some people say it's 'easy' According to the undergrad calendar all 1st year the ECE courses are restricted to ECE students, but you might be able to override into them in September. I suspect you can override into the ECE courses. If I were you, I'd try to avoid 101 courses. They tend to be universally terrible. Though, Larry Smith's ECON 101 is not bad at all. (Any other section, avoid like the plague.) There are plenty of upper year electives available, if you look for them. Though, the language electives are pretty awesome for the most part. Any of those are recommended. Plan ahead: you need the following courses... - 2 humanities courses (languages, arts, etc.) - 2 social science courses (econ, psych, soc, etc.) - 1 "hard" science course - 1 soft or hard science course - a prerequisite chain of 3 OR three courses in one subject area, so long as one is at least at the third year level

No, it is very unlikely for you to override into any engineering course due to the huge numbers in first year engineering classes. It's more likely when you choose to do a hardware option (you can decide in 2nd year i believe) because by then, many people would have dropped out. As for recommendations, ECON 102 is a lot more interesting than 101. Also, I'm not sure if it's avail in Fall but Music 140 is an interesting one. I hear soc 101 is boring, and psych 101 is just your typical 600 person class. interesting, but a LOT of reading to do. Definitely go for your interests when you're in first year, many people take the standard physics (phys 111/112) or chemistry (120,121) as their first year electives (more high school review, and get rid of your sci elective) UW Software Engineering 2015Check out my blog, where I talk about school, coop terms, and other random stuff :)

Or you could do a minor in an area...like physics, chemistry or biology, as long as it is outside of the math faculty...
