I'm coming back next year to redeem myself and I'm going to apply for social sciences at mac. It's only a year, it will go by fast.

I was short 4 credits of graduating high school (because of numerous failed courses) and I'm just finishing up my victory lap year right now. My average last year was in the high 70s to low 80s and this year it's in the mid to high 80s range so I'm very happy with the decision. Ironically, Mac social sciences was the first acceptance I received back in January because my final average last year was about 76% which is just above the cut-off.

Good for you! And you are right, it will go by fast. Your attitude is refreshing from everyone else I see posts from/know are doing a victory lap. I am doing a victory lap now (but through online courses, so I'm done now). At first I thought it was horrible and that I was an utter failure. But being in a victory lap has given me amazing opportunities, and I am so glad I went back. I wasn't ready for uni. But now I am. Trust me, as long as you have things to occupy your time, it will go by fast. Good luck!

I was contemplating on deferring an offer and re-applying next year and taking it from there, but I ended up choosing a school and am quite comfortable with my decision.

I've heard of people who have taken victory laps, and really find them a chance to "mature" - apparently that "maturing time" was taken away when they removed Grade 13.

I'm just about to finish my victory lap and I have to say it has its ups and downs:

Ups: less distractions due to lack of people you knew the previous 4 years of high school, more dedication to work as you most likely have a goal in mind, you can skip your "slacker" classes if you need to (as you've most likely already graduated and the "slacker" class is just there cause you have to take it)

Downs: Lack of social life (at least at school) as most of your friends are off to university, the last few months really get to you because you want to get out by April/May and be done with high school, having to do group work with completely new people

Don't worry though this is just my POV on victory laps, as long as you have a goal in mind you should be fine/happy!!

Anyone have more info about the proposal to cut the victory lap? As far as I know, apparently they put a cap on students limiting them to 34 credits. Is this true? I'm gonna have 33 credits after finishing second semester and I'd like to victory lap through night school/virtual school.

I did a 5th year and I hated it. Yes, it does help get your marks up. I went from high 70's low 80's to a 93% average. But everything else about it i didn't like. And yes, the government is thinking of limiting returning students to 4 credits. But this hasn't been finalized yet.

Lol I got accepted to university. Everything should have been fine but I let my Physics mark drop. I took 2 spares so if all goes well. I would graduate with 30 credits. The problems is Physics might drop below 50 so I will be missing a credit and wont be able to graduate.

Anyway, if you really need/want to, go for it. If you didnt get accepted to the school you wanted to go to, you should go for a victory lap unless you are certain that you will have the marks to transfer.

I'm just finishing up my victory lap. I'm glad I did it. I met a lot of great new friends and experienced variety of new courses that I enjoy going into instead of skipping. My average last year was a 62.5%. I'm about to go into exams, my average is currently a 84.6%. Overall it was a great experienced, I've learned to pursue what you like and great result will come from it.

Omg, is it true that they are planning to limit returning students to 4 credits next year? Sadly, I have to do a second victory lap because my marks took a hit when my dad started getting sick. Hopefully, I'll be able to get high school over with and get into the program I want next year.

They're trying to make it so that you can only have 34 credits when you graduate. So if you took more than 6 courses in grade 12 and didn't take any spares before that, you can't even take a full semester load. You'd probably have to resort to doing private school or something.

2012-2013 returning grad. Its rather painful to see all my friends being accepted to university and choosing their courses (For some choosing residence),but I'm happy that I will have a chance to redeem myself, especially in advanced functions.

I heard that after this year, the Canadian government is going to stop paying for the extra year of high school. Basically, those who decide to take a victory lap after 2013 will pay around $5000.

wow seriously? thats almost like a term of university tuition. i guess it sort of encourages high school kids to figure out their future, and not waste the public's money. Im not referring to people in this thread, rather, im referring to those who are taking workplace/college level courses and are still in HS. just bumming around, basically.
