What are everyones thoughts on working while going to school? I've been getting mixed messages from everyone I talk to so I am unsure as to what I should do. Some say that working while going to school will earn you the extra cash, but it also takes away from school time.

There have been numerous threads about this.
It's definitely doable, but it depends on the person and their work habits.
If you're someone who can get a 90+ average without really having to study, then a job wouldn't hurt with your schooling.
But if you're someone who spends at least 7+ hours studying for tests every week, then a job might not be a good idea.
I, myself, have always managed to balance school and work.
During the school year, I work ~15 hours a week.. usually weekends.
But during the summer, I work full time while still attending summer school.
I still manage to maintain a ~90% average.
It's a lot of work for sure, but if you're the type who can balance everything out, it's definitely doable!

.. No one is talking about going to StFX here...
Not everyone spends 12 hours with their textbooks to get 99% averages.. that's ridiculous.
You need to get out more!

I'm super stressed about University. I need the money so I don't get COMPLETELY in debt, but I don't want to stress myself out even more by busying myself with a job. Is it worth it?

I think it would depend on the grade you are in or if you are in university or not. I am in grade 12 and I have worked since grade 10, which has allowed me to save money for school. I have been told by every freshmen that you should not work in your first year of university because you are getting used to a new place, harder school work, etc. So, I don't advise working your first year (or first semester anyways) but I am sure that every year after that it would be fine, depending on the workload and other commitments. It also depends on the person I think, how well you can manage your school workload while working as well.

i think working while going to school is okay to an extent. Like if it didn't take up too much time out of your time table.

I'm a senior student and I don't have a job, but I do extra-curricular activites after school. I think having a job during school can take away from the opportunity to excell more in those activites. ...But it would be great to have that extra cash! :)

Exactly, ovaltinerox! You have to have a balance of things. If you have a job, make sure you make time for schooling and extra things such as sports or music.

I believe working helps develop your time management skills. I've only been working for a few months for the first time and I'm in grade 12. Since I work at a particularly enjoyable place to be at, I find work to be a place that relieves me from the pressures of school (though acceptances and reading about people here with 97 averages scares me a bit!). As everyone as already said, it really depends on what grade you are in, your willingness to balance things and even make sacrifices. I've had to give up certain commitments at school because I have to work. I am still trying to develop better work habits (whether I am working or not), it really depends on the person!

I definitely agree that having a job can take away from these extra-curricular activities. It depends on your ability to work around them, I have come to balance work, school, and extra curricular activities --trying to let work interfere as little as possible with extra curricular activities. Its a bit tough.
