Welcome to this thread where you can ask me anything about the HBA Program and the student experience for all years at Western and Ivey.

To provide you with some background, I recently graduated from the Honors Business Adminstration Program (HBA) this past year and currently working with the school as the HBA Recruiting Associate. I work closely with most areas of the school, including the admissions committee, career management and faculty.

Throughout my years at Western and Ivey I have been involved in a wide variety of activities, most of my time was consumed with residence life and student government; although I have dabbled in a number of club executive positions, intramural activities and a number of different student jobs on campus.

This would be a great forum to dispel some rumours about the program and clear up some of the myths about Ivey. I look forward to our discussions.

When will more acceptances be sent out? How many did you send out during march 30th? and how many more acceptances will be sent out?

About 60% of our offers went out yesterday. Offers will be made on a rolling basis from now on.

I got my offer yesterday, and have already accepted it. However my inside track section now appears blank under the "messages from Ivey" is this supposed to happen?

And I have heard many things about Ivey so just wondering how challenging the program is, and what is the daily life of an Ivey student like?bounce bounce

I'm slightly confused, because one person that I talked to at Western said that Ivey will be accepting more AEOs this year due to the expansion. But another student I talked to said that Ivey will be accepting less because they overestimated their capacity. Is this true?

Sharnarion, have you tried logging out and logging back in? If this still doesn't update by Friday, send an email to hba@ivey.ca describing your problems.

As for the day in the life of an HBA, there a discussion on our facebook group on that. Here are a couple excerpts:

Shreya

I am an HBA1, so I have no choice but to wake up bright and early!

Here's an example of my typical day:

6:00am or 6:30am: Wake up (Don't ask me why I wake up so early)
8:10am: Classes start
12:50pm: Classes end
1:00pm to 4pm: This is the time period during which most of my meetings or career management information sessions are held. If I want to meet a prof or a career counsellor, I do so during this time frame.

After 4:00pm, I am either at home or at the library studying. Sometimes recruiting or networking sessions are held later in the evening as well (I have one tomorrow!). Around 5:00pm, I also meet up with my learning teams if necessary.

Depending on how I feel, I either spend a few more hours studying on campus, or go home and finish up my cases.

And finally,

12:00am: Time to sleep!

Tasha

Hey Guys,

I am an HBA1 just like Shreya, so let me tell you a little about what my routine looks like:

7 AM: wake up....I'm pretty quick in getting dressed so I get the luxury of sleeping in a bit

8 AM - 12:40 PM: 3 classes with 20 minutes breaks in between each

1 PM - 4 PM: Just as most others said, this is when you can expect most meetings and career management sessions to be held. It's also kind of nice that you get to take a break and stay involved in extra-curricular life before you start on your homework for the evening

4:00 - 9:30/10 PM: The rest of the night consists of 2-3 cases that must be completed for the next day, and I also like to hit the gym for at least an hour. I definitely want to stress how important it is to make time for activities like this, because it has been one of the major reasons I am able to stay so level-headed during the thick of things in Ivey.

10:30: throw on a little Modern Family, Friends, or How I Met Your Mother

11:00 - 11:30 : Bed! (Yeah...I need my sleep so my bed time is pretty early )

---

So pretty much, some of the most important things that I feel the HBA experts brought to the surface are:

1. Make time for your friends outside of Ivey! I have failed miserably these past few weeks and they are incredibly important in helping to achieve that work/life balance

2. Stay on top of your work - make time for hobbies/sports but always make sure your work is done so you are ready to get involved in class the next day. Prioritizing is key!

Samantha

I'm an HBA2 as well. I, unlike Allison, am not a morning person.

10:45am: Wake up - catch the bus to class for 11:20
1-3:50pm: When we don't have group meetings, I like to catch up with non-Ivey friends to get out of the "Ivey Bubble"
3:50-5:10: Class
5:30+: I play four intramural sports, so one a night. When I don't have intramurals, I usually head to the gym or watch a basketball game after doing some cases. If it's Thursday, I am most likely getting ready to head out to Ivey's favourite social establishment... :)

Ivey projects its HBA numbers many years in advance and makes AEO offers for the HBA class two years later. Given that the HBA graduating class is going to remain at 600, the number of AEO offers made will remain the same as the past couple year. What you may be confused about is the number of AEOs entering HBA (after 2 years at Western), this fluctuates every year depending on the number of people maintaining their AEO progression requirements and if they still want to pursue business (you'd be surprised how many people switch their majors in university).

I saw this on the Ivey site:
Quote:
All students who apply through their Ivey HBA application will be considered for almost a million dollars in Ivey Scholarships and Awards. Please be sure to complete the Financial Aid section on the online Ivey HBA application. Scholarships are awarded solely on overall academic merit or achievement in a particular subject area. Students with greater financial need are given priority on all but the academic awards. Award recipients are selected based on financial need as assessed through the UWO Bursary Application.

Please keep in mind that the scholarship process is extremely competitive due to the high caliber of students admitted to the Ivey HBA Program. While strong grades are important, we also consider leadership skills as demonstrated through extracurricular activities.
Most candidates who have been selected to receive an award will receive notification in their official HBA Admission Offer package

...and I do not recall filling this out. Is there any way I can check this?

Or is the application as a whole used for Ivey Awards?

Thank you.

Does rolling basis mean there could potentially be offers given out every single day from now until whenever the last day is? Or are there specific days that Ivey chooses to give out offers such as yesterday (March 30)?

Thanks

@axiom2true It's going to be part of your AEO intent application (in 2nd year) or your HBA application (applying from 2nd year). Don't worry about it for now.

UWO financial aid has a ton of scholarships too, but you should get some information on that in the mail or emails about it.

Alright, thanks. But would there be any financial information (decisions for scholarships, etc.) in the acceptance package? Or is it just a brochure?

In theory, rolling basis means every day. In practicality, it will be made when the admissions committee has compiled enough data for students to make offers.

Sorry I can't give you a definitive answer. Hope this answers your question.

I realized that for U.S. colleges, 2011 was the most competitive year for admissions. Is this true for Ivey?

If you have specific questions about financial aid, you should send an email to hba@ivey.ca. HBA scholarships are meant to be applied to your HBA tuition (in 3rd year). Have you applied for scholarships in your Western program?

Sorry, mercenary. It is quite late to apply for AEO status. Bear in mind that you can apply to Ivey in your first two years (make sure you take the necessary prerequisite courses) http://www.ivey.uwo.ca/h...sity-students/index.htm for more information.

One of the requirements to maintaining AEO status is to continue with our extracurricular commitments. How will this be evaluated for the actual admission into Ivey for 3rd year?

We haven't looked at the stats for this year in particular yet, but this year had the highest number of applications.

One common misconception is that it is easier to get in as our program has grown. One of the key successes the school has done over the past several years is to greatly increase the number of applications to keep the quality of students constant.

We'll look at the past 4 years (Grade 11 + 12, Year 1, Year 2) of your involvement.
