Every school has some degree of school spirit. So if you're looking for it, it's not impossible to find.

But compared to schools like Western, Queen's, etc. it probably seems like U of T has no school spirit. The size of the school and the fact that's in Toronto (= commuters) are why it feels more disconnected.

On the level of the whole school, no. U of T doesn't compare spirit-wise to schools like Queen's or Western. However, I think you will find (as it has been my observation) that there is quite a good amount of spirit and involvement at each college or faculty individually.

UofT is just like my high school I have attended during(and only) grade 12... absolutely no school spirit.

In reality all schools have school spirit, the extent is the major difference. At U of T the sports teams are pretty crap but there are signs all around the Athletic Center trying to get kids to attend the sporting events and cheer on their team but due to the fact that the average U of T kid is some nerd who doesn't have any interest in sports the school has really low school spirit in terms of sports. In terms of school spirit as a whole I'd say U of T has a crapload of that, I mean every one of these bastards I have met scoff at York university and the 'poor souls' that attend the school. The bastards at UTSG even put down the other UofT campuses like UTSC, I was talking to some kid in a Math lecture about some course offered at UTSC and they just laughed and said, "Come on bro, UTSG is where its at forget UTSC". So yes the school has school spirit amongst its students as most of them think their crap don't stink. In general though the school is very isolated and most students don't know what the school mascot is and most kids can't even seem to make friends. In conclusion, UofT does not have legitimate school spirit.

You will however see a ton of kids buy a bunch of overpriced UofT apparel to further boost their ego's.

Look, people shouldn't be so concerned with school spirit. You go to university for higher learning and (hopefully) to get a job when you are through. It is up to you whether you want to be involved with school spirit. It also depends on who you hang out with and what clubs you join.

I agree, but as cyynthiia said, you completely ignored my question.

UTSG doesn't have the "UofT is great, we love it!" kind of school spirit, but it does have the "UofT is cold and hard, but at least we're not at York" kind of school spirit. But this is present in all schools. Every other school, for example, says the reverse of what we say: "Yeah, maybe UofT is harder, but at least we have lives here at York."

I can honestly say that UTSG is probably the worst school in terms of school spirit or a sense of community, more than half the kids hate the school (for obvious reasons), and the rest just try to justify that coming to UTSG will make them better students in the end or some dumb crap, UTSG is horrible for undergrad unless you are into doing research, otherwise GTFO away. If you want school spirit go to Queen's or Western or any school other than UTSG, UTM, UTSC, and York.

What did you expect coming to UTSG? And justifying your choice of school by stating that it will make you a better student, or that it will provide you with research opportunities, is not "dumb crap," but mature, career-oriented reasons that everyone should seek to justify their choice of school with.

I guess so, U of T has a school spirit. Just consider the student quality, faculty quality, reputation of school, operating budget per student, university resources such as library holdings and acquisitions, student services before you apply.

There's virtually no spirit outside of certain colleges and fields of study. Too big, too many commuters, too many people who only care about their degrees. It won't be a problem if you're living on res or if you're studying something less broad than life science or sociology though (it sounds like the engineers are pretty tight).
