haha, I never meant to. I knew that with our SIN numbers in tow they have the power of Big Brother and the Mukhabarat combined! cyclops in a good way of course. I just thought it better to inform them at the end of my job term, when wage details and all that would be accurate (as opposed to estimating more or less and getting fired sooner). Maybe a fool's reasoning, now that I see the results...

Some questions, if anyone will indulge them:
1. Are grants (like the Access Grant) for one year only?
2. I've heard from a lot of people in this forum and others that 'funding can only go down' is a rule of thumb, does that mean I should appeal the small amount OSAP gives me in the first year, in anticipation that my need would increase in other years?

As always thanks so much!

You'll verify it in September.

when i went on OSAP click on total issue date, the amount is different compared to the "funding summary" page.
so is the issue date only part of the total?
thanks!

The amount issued in September will be 60% of the total amount. You'll get the other 40% in January.

Hi, I have a few questions regarding the OSAP application.

Am I eligible for OSAP if I am an Ontario resident attending McGill University in Québec?

My parents are divorced and I live between my mom's house and my dad's house. However, the address on my driver's license is my mom's address. Once I arrive to Montréal however, I will be exchanging my license for a Québec license which will have my new Québec address on it (one of the apartments I've been looking at). I am wondering which of my parent's income to put in order to receive the most money from OSAP. My mom does not work, however she is disabled under the Canada Pension Plan so she receives a substantial amount from the Disability Benefit. I will also be receiving some of this money (Child's Benefit, 214$ per month) as a child aged under 18-25 of a disabled parent attending school. On the Income Tax Return, my mom makes much more money than my dad does. My dad owns a small business, a cigar shop in which he is the only employee. Business is not good, he has a considerable amount of debt from credit cards and currently owns no more credit cards. He didn't file for bankruptcy but almost did. He currently lives on the upper level of his store, so he technically doesn't have a house. When I go to live with him, I stay in that upper level of the store. Needless to say, his yearly income on the tax return is much less than my mother's. In your opinion, which of my parents should I put for the income part of the application?

The answer for me is to put my dad as he makes less money, but the problem is that the address on my license is my mother's. However, I'll be changing my license for a Québec one in about 7-10 days and that one will have a completely different Québec license. Please advise me with what to do and which parent to put, I would really appreciate it. Thank you so much!

First of all, you don't need to spam the same question 3 times to get a response.

1. Yes, you are.

2. You are required to put both of your parents' incomes. Trying to exclude one or the other because it'll get you less money is called fraud! There are sections to check off if one parent is receiving money from disability or other benefit programs, but you need to claim both of their incomes.

I apologize, it is my first time on the forum and I wasn't sure how to use it. I'll delete the 2 other posts.

For the second question, I only saw a section for 1 parent income in the application after I put that my parents are divorced. It then asked me which parent I live with and that is the one for which I have to answer several questions about their income tax return. There was nothing about parent 2 after selecting the divorced section.

This is what I was asked about parent 1:
Total income as indicated on line 150:
Net income as indicated on line 236:
Canada Pension Plan contribution as indicated on lines 308 and 310:
Employment Insurance premiums as indicated on line 312:
Total tax payable as indicated on line 435:

Parent 1 Other Income
If Parent 1 has other income not reported on his or her 2010 Canadian income tax return or other income that he or she does not expect to report on his or her 2010 Canadian income tax return, enter the TOTAL value of this taxable and non-taxable 2010 income from all sources world-wide.
All other taxable and non-taxable 2010 income:

Also, what's the difference between Parent 1 and 2?

I'm not trying to commit any fraud, I technically live between both of my parents (1 week here, 1 week there) and I'm just trying to get as much help as possible for paying off university. Please let me know how to resolve this issue. Sorry again and thanks so much for your help!

Interesting. I would call them to ask then, because I haven't heard of that. If you're living between both then you should have to provide both of their incomes. They're both your parents and should both be helping you.

I only have to provide 1 parent income if the case is that my parents are divorced and both not remarried. I did call them, she told me to fill out only 1 parent's income then send a letter or fax to OSAP explaining my situation as well as providing them with my new Québec driver's license number and address. That wasn't much help. Do you or anyone else have any other suggestions for me?

Also, what is the difference between parent 1 and 2?

Finally, I need help with this question: What percentage of a full course load will you be taking?
I know that I have to have a course load of over 60% to be considered as a full time student, but I don't know which value to put or how to calculate it. I will be attending McGill University in the Freshman Program of BSc Biomedical, Biological and Life Sciences. I will most likely be taking 10 courses per year (5 in the fall semester, 5 in the winter semester). What does this amount to as to the percentage of a full course load?

Please answer all my questions with as much detail as possible. Thank you so much for your time and help!

I find that odd you only have to list one parent when you live with both, but if you called and ask, then pick whichever one you think would be best. We're not OSAP, we don't know how they actually calculate your need, we can't help you much more than you can just guess which parent is less well-off.

You are taking a full course load. Put 100%.

How was that not much help? Did they not just answer your questions and tell you what to do?

Parent 1 is your first parent and parent 2 is your second parent... scratch

Your university will be able to answer that. Are you taking a full course load? If yes, then it's 100%.

When and how do we report income changes (not our parents, our own summer income) if we make a few hundred more or less?

I think what youre looking for is someone to tell you which parent to put down, right, that is, which one should be your Parent 1 and Parent 2. For most of us it's just a random pick of either, which is why people here arent able to help you. I think you should ask OSAP people specifically which parent you should put down, and get a straight answer from them exactly which one.

I sympathize with you in your stress. OSAP times are stress times :/

Thanks for all the help!

To Ims:
I did call earlier and the lady told me "we cannot tell you which parent to put" and "we are not authorized to advise you on which parent to indicate"...I ended up choosing my dad but I'm not hesitating before submitting it as someone else told me the following:

"The second thing is that one of your parents has been claiming you on their income tax evey year as a dependent. OSAP is going to check your parents' income tax returns. So no point in lying about where you've been living -- you will get your parent in trouble with Canada Revenue."

I technically am not lying as I do live 50% of the time with my mom and 50% of the time with my dad, but I wanted to put my dad's income since he makes less than my mom. My dad said he has never claimed me as a dependent on his income tax since he pays child support to my mom. Would my OSAP application therefore get home or me into any kind of trouble if I put his income on it? Please let me know.

Also, one last question, the OSAP site says I have to take the signed papers to my financial aid office. Where is this office? I am guessing it would be my university but I'm not so sure. Does this mean I have to take my OSAP papers to McGill in Montreal? That doesn't make sense to me since I think they should be kept in Ontario...My other guess is to take them to the university in my city, the University of Windsor. But again, I'm not sure about that either. Someone please clarify where my financial aid office would be.

Thanks so much again for all the help!

Hey guys,

Under income verification for the OSAP application it says income year to be verified for my parents is 2010, but for myself it says still to be determined...is this normal or no?

Thanks.

That's annoying that OSAP can't tell you which parent to put. You're likely not going to get your dad in trouble, but it might be better to put your mom down if she's the one claiming you as a dependent.

You want the university you're attending to have the papers. I'm sure McGill deals with OSAP and other provincial loans fairly regularly.

Agreed with ktel above... it should go to mcgill if thats where youre going i think. in any case it indicates on the top right part of the signed documents where it should go: mine said Uoft Admissions and Awards for instance.

About the whole issue of which parent to indicate... it does seem torturous and unfortunate that OSAP itself would not even advise you? hmmm

i'm in the same position as you bounce either its normal, or like me, you worked for the summer and hadnt declared it yet/just declared it but OSAP is going through it. in any case you might have changes to make/had made to your original income amount declared, i guess bounce hope they iron it out

Sorry I had to repeat this post, but I have OSAP questions meselfs:

This makes no sense. They evaluate it separately each year based on the previous year's income. If all of a sudden a parent loses their job, your funding could go up. If you've been out of high school for 4 years and are considered an independent, your funding could go up.
