Hey guys! I'm going to gr. 12 this year and I need interesting places to volunteer or work so I could beef up my university application. I'm applying to programs such as Queen's Commerce, and they require an extensive amount of extra curricular activities. So if anybody knows of places to volunteer or work, it would be greatly appreciated if you could help me out :)

Are you involved with anything right now? I hope so, and I hope you can build on that. Because to be honest, just joining something in grade 12 so it will look good on your application will be kind of obvious. They're not looking for an extensive amount, they're looking for QUALITY.

When they mean extra curricular, do they mean anything outside of regular school? So like clubs and things we do outside of school? I have a few activities, like Cadets, 3 different places I volunteered, 3 jobs, and assistant coach at this b-ball camp for kids. I mean I want to do more so thats why i'm gonna join clubs in gr 12. How can universities tell when i joined anyways?

They mean anything outside of classes. So if you're on a school sports team or club that counts too.

Most supplementary applications ask how long you've been involved with a particular activity. Being involved for a long time in a few things looks a lot better than being involved in a lot of different things for a short time

The only website that actually responds to a few of my emails would be

http://www.volunteertoronto.ca/

Although many of their sites are outdated, there are a few that you can go for if you are going to put the effort in it. The ones that I could do were from places far away from home so expect to use transportation. Other than websites, your high school should offer little things to do after school. But as a previous poster mentioned, putting in more hours in a few volunteer opportunities is more worth than doing various volunteer opportunities but have low hours put into them. It kinda sounds counter-intuitive but when you start making your acceptance letters, you can fully expand on those volunteer opportunities you put countless hours into.

Personally, I wouldn't choose using a volunteer position at a non-profit to take your application to the next level. Scholarships are looking for leadership, initiative, something that jumps off the page. I think you will be much better served trying to find a large project your can organize. Maybe start a school intramural league, with a small registration fee, give out a few prizes and give the rest to charity. Or organize a talent show, with the funds put towards graduation. Or maybe you want to do something with a non-profit, but make it YOUR project. Otherwise, you'll just end up sorting clothes, or cleaning, or maybe answering phones. Having that one big committment allows you to fill in those essays ("Name a project in which you were a leader. What did you do?") and get some concrete evidence of your contribution (Planned, organized and ran a fundraiser for _____ that raised $$$)

Hey! I'm part of the Habitat Youth Coalition (HYC), the youth arm of Habitat for Humanity, and we are looking for a few students to join our committee. I have this in a new post, but I'll just write out the details in case you are still interested:

Habitat Youth Coalition the youth arm of Habitat for Humanity, and it is a new student run committee geared towards educating youth about issues in their communities and motivating them to make a difference. HYC is created and led by students in Toronto who want to make a difference in the community as well as inspire their students to do the same.

We are currently seeking youth leaders for a variety of different roles, depending on time commitment and experience level. Below is a description of the different opportunities available:
• HYC Outreach Volunteer: Best suited for those who want to be involved with HYC but are not ready to take on a leadership role. Members help build assist with fund-raisers, do presentations at schools, take part in other activities as they wish.
• Sub-Committee Member: Assists the sub-committee chairperson and other sub-committee members in the planning and coordination of various projects.
• Steering Committee Member: For those who want to be more involved in planning events, taking on leadership roles as committee heads, and are willing to commit the time required of the positions.

There are different roles and will allow you to build up many leadership skills. You will also get to know many high school and university students and it’s a great place to expand your horizons.

If you are interested, please email: signmeup@torontohabitat.on.ca with “Habitat Youth Coalition” in the subject line. For more information on Habitat for Humanity please visit: www.torontohabitat.ca
