Greygoose, who could I contact to ask for permission to enroll in MATH 249 except the CS advisors ? I have 1 more day...

Math 249? You can't take that until at least 1B. I'll assume you meant CS 145. It doesn't matter that much, when Prof. Ragde gets to your e-mail, he'll get back to you.

Let me spam:

1. How does UW know that you took courses in night/summer/on-line school? [Planning to take a course on-line, not a prerequisite though]
2. If I need to take 3.0 units per semester, what if the labs made my unit load become 3.25 or 3.50?
3. Is graphing required for most PMATH/CO courses? What about interpreting graphs?
4. Do CO 250 and 255 differ in ways similar to MATH 237 and 247?
5. [Not of my concern] If someone in Accounting and Financial Management wants to take AFM 272 and it has prerequisites of (MATH 13[5678], STAT 23[01]) courses, how hard should it be for this person to override into them?

1. On your AIF you have to say which courses you took outside of regular day school. Can't remember if they have another method of checking.

2. Normally you only take 2.5 units per term as a full time student. Not positive on how labs work into that.

It's not about CS 145. I have transfer credits for MATH 135 and MATH 137 and I guess that makes me a 1B student when talking about math.

How the hell do you get MATH 135 transfer credit? AP does not do anything! It only gets you MATH 137!

Aww man I grew so tired of explaining to people things... I graduated high school in Romania, and there, people learn more stuff in math than the most high school students throughout the whole world. It's not necessarily high - tech, few people actually understand the material taught in classrooms and in order to graduate high school it is mandatory that u cross all this at a regular pace, no home school option, doesn't matter how good you are if you're from a low-mid family there are no shortcuts. Home school is so important and people don't realize it ...

In addition to my previous question, would there be any sort of way to test out of Phys 121 and 122, or to be exempt from it?

This is crazy! Why do you want to be exempt from PHYS 121/122? I would think that by skipping, you are really risking passing the higher level physics classes! So please do not skip, unless you are taking Physics C - Mechanics + Electricity & Magnetism!

I... actually have already taken both Physics C exams, and I'll have Physics B done by the time I graduate. I just don't really get why Waterloo doesn't give 121/122 credit for Physics C when most other colleges, at least in the U.S., give AP credit for their first-year calculus-based physics class.

Awwww...I kind of know that you care about transfer credits. You see, why couldn't we just take Physics C for PHYS 121/131L/122/132L, Calculus BC for MATH 137/138, Computer Science for CS 135/136, Statistics for STAT 230/231. This is essentially 5 units, how nice is that? You save one year for this, you know? OK, this is crazy...but it is good for the purpose of saving money...$600 per course is really something...

Unfortunately, my school only has AP Calculus AB and Biology, not Computer Science or Physics [AP physics teacher will retire this year]...

*shrug* AP Computer Science, Statistics, and Calc BC are all pretty watered down, so I can understand those, but from the way greygoose described Physics 121/122, it seems like it'd be a waste of time to take those, considering he took B and said most of it was boring and repeptitive.

In my opinion, it's not that it's easy, but it's algorithmic, and it really isn't different from Algebra 2 or Precalculus or whatever except that the algorithms are a little more complex, and you learn more of them. And that's fine if you're not majoring in Math, but since I want to major in math, I kinda need to take a proofy-based version.

By analogy, if there were an advanced version of PHYS 121/122 that started with multivariable calculus and differential equations and whatnot (since I've already learned the algebraic and single-variable version of it), which they do offer in some schools here in the states, I'd rather take that at UW.

Ha! You are more interested in MATH 14[5678], 24 [579], CS 14[56] and other forms of Advanced Level courses! The AP exam is not designed to test how well you can write proofs but it is designed to test how fast you can do like 28 questions within 55 minutes (?) for the multiple-choice section or something. This is something that I do not like about AP, but then, up here in Ontario, if you do not take AP, there is really no course that could offer you more in-depth knowledge on the subject you want to pursue. I mean, I love to take the advanced courses if I get accepted next year, and you should probably consider that as well, just like what Greygoose has said about them and how they can help you think.

Indeed. It's just that for PHYS 121/122 in particular, it seems like a waste of time for me to take, and I'd rather start out with classes like PHYS 234, PHYS 242 and AMATH 271 rather than relearn old stuff.

I do not know if the professors will let you override into that many courses...maybe, are you going into the University this year? Try contacting the faculties and see if you can get overrides, if you do, then great, if not, then...you might be stuck doing something that you have already done and wasting time and tuition on useless things, which I hate, even if I do not have to pay tuition.

I'm applying next year, so I'm hoping to try and prep myself for the more advanced physics courses by reading textbooks like Kleppner and Kolenkow's Intro. to Mechanics and Purcell's Electricity and Magnetism. Next year's gonna be pretty boring, since I go to an AP school, and there aren't really any courses that are harder than Physics C and Calculus BC, so I'm going to have a lot of free time...

Pfft, more like an idiot for deciding to waste another year at high school. A lot of those classes are taught to the test, so it's more of a useless waste of time than anything. Also, I'm planning on getting those books either used, from India, or both, as my way of flipping off the textbook industry. My Physics teacher recommended those books to me, since I kinda disliked the way Halliday and Resnick treated the material.
